I got into a debate with some co-workers the other day I feel like they are retarded and my opinion is correct of course but I'm curious so I wanted to post a poll for everyone on what is the greatest gaming franchise of all time. I know I'm not going to include them all just some of the popular ones. If you disagree pick "other" and post which you believe it should be. ;)

I voted for Mario. I always find myself going back any playing any Mario game. The newest one my boy got me hooked is Mario party on the Wii. He is only 8 but plays the shit out of it beats me a lot. Also Mario Cart still my Boy kicks my ass.

I voted for Final Fantasy even though I thought the newest one they put out is beyond terrible. Besides that I have loved Final Fantasy since it first came out. I would love to go back and play it but for the life of me I cannot find my PS1 or the copy of it haha. I think what sold Final Fantasy for me was the Chocobo racing:cool: and, (in the later games) RedXIII. Anyone else agree? haha

I wouldn't say FFXIII is the worst game ever but it did have a lot of characteristics that were forgetful at best. When I picked up FFVII my life changed and I knew that video games were going to play a big part in my life haha. I know I forgot Gears up there but there just wasn't enough room on the polls :( I agree with you on Mario though them shits are addicted. I remember Super Mario RPG back in the day... still haunts my dreams haha

I voted for God of War, because of how amazing each game was. I feel like the story built up as each game progressed while never sacrificing any action. God of War 3 was so incredibly well done that it beckons to be replayed. Kratos was also a very engrossing character.

Aside from that, I would have voted for the Assassin's Creed series. Those also told a great story with surprises and twists at every turn. There are very few actions as satisfying as sneaking up on an unsuspecting enemy and taking him down with the hidden blades. It was very easy to get into the story of Ezio, Altair, and Desmond.

Call of duty single player is usually good but the multiplayer hasn't changed much in the last 3 games, and it seems like they're just trying to gouge you for cash with every new map or elite thing they can sell you.
I agree that gears is pretty good too. I got the kinect for Christmas for the family and have played that and halo online a couple times because of the free month of Xbox live I got. I thought gears was good but could not believe how overhyped halo was.
I have spent more time on and gotten the most fun out of the battlefield series by far, even though the last ones campaign left a lot to be desired.

Voted MGS. I could only finish the 4th and final one due to all the others being out when I was young and too stupid to use logic for the game, but the 4th one sold me enough just to tell me...It was amazing. I also like Assassin's Creed, Hitman (even though I was terrible), all the sports games due to me going through phases, and probably a close number 2 would have to be Call of Duty. Sure the multiplayer is just repetitive and zombified, but no matter how short the campaign is, I haven't been able to stop when I play it. Even if I want to just play 1 mission.

Honestly, I'm not sure any one of them is the single "best."

I remember a Mario phase as a young kid, and enjoying a couple of the games even as a not so young kid.

There was a Final Fantasy phase where a friend and I would play them all weekend long. Then there was FF7, which led me to buying a Playstation.

For me though, I think Halo was the go-to series that really defined my gaming. And I don't think I've ever lost myself in a game as much as I have in that series, which I'll always hold in Nostalgia.

In my mid-adulthood, my interest in games...and lack of interest in the 12 year olds, has largely moved me in to Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect. When I get around to playing Skyrim, I have no doubts that it will hook me just as much as Oblivion did....with upwards of 200 hours logged. That'll probably be about the time I largely give up on FPS multiplayer and become an old man playing his single player games.

I have to go with Final Fantasy and I have not even played them all. No game (at the time) ever dragged me into a world as developed and with such an amazing story as Final Fantasy 7. It was the game that defined my later gaming choices. Also it had one of the most memorable scenes in gaming and a villain who 15 years later is still in the top 5 of most villain lists. I flat out loved FFX. I remember it came out during one of my deployments and the day I got back in country I bought it. I spent the first few days of R&R time helping Yuna and hoping she would not wind up like some other FF females. I didn't even let my friends come over because I did not want any spoilers. FF XI was not all that much fun but I gave it a shot. And as far as XIII goes...I really enjoyed that too. It had some flaws but over all a nice addition to the series.

Honestly I could say some good things about some of those other games too (like the first time I fought Mantis in MGS) but in the end I have already talked alot. Final Fantasy has adapted and kept going for many many years and hopefully will continue for many more.

Also..I can be long winded. You should have seen it before I edited it down.

I'm going to have to put my vote towards battlefield. The original Vietnam was awesome then they made it better with the bad company 2 expansion. Which brings the bad company series out. It was a very engrossing campaign to follow. Battlefield 2 was the one that made me fall in love with the game series then 2142. 1943 was short lived but still fun to go back and play. The implementation of destructive environment was by far one of the biggest selling points as well. Can't kill him...bring the building down on top of him then.

I pray they do. FF was was one of those games that everyone talked about and played back in the day. I read an article about them possibly re-doing FFVII for the PS3 and they said it would take about 10 years for them to completely remake it. I would wait for that, of course by then we'd have PS5s or something like that haha but it would be insanse

I have to go with Halo. It totally redefined the FPS genre, gave us one of the largest gaming 'universes'. And the SP campaign was IMO the best of any franchise, especially HALO: CE.

That's what got me into gaming, so I'll always have some nostalgia for that. And it was soooo long - they just don't put the effort into campaigns anymore. Got so many hours of enjoyment out of it (except for The Library - ugh!). I've only got 6 - Halo:CE (PC), Halo 2 (PC), Halo: ODST (360), Reach (360), Reach Limited (360), Halo:CE Anniversary (360). I got Reach with my Reach-edition Xbox, and then went back and bought the limited edition and sold the regular edition.

I just finally beat the campaign for it on 360. Definitely a trip down memory lane!

I would vote for Halo but im surprised Command and Conquer isnt on here or Warcraft. When i was a kid C&C and Warcraft was the defining games i played as a kid, it is what made me love RTS games and fall in love with Gaming. Sure i played Mario, Halo, COD, FF, and man other franchises, but u cant deny the power that u got from playing Warcraft I, II, and III. Or even the C&C series. Just the feeling to build ur massive army to destroy another player, just brings such joy.

But if we are going to name great franchises i would also like to name Mass Effect. Granted the ending for 3 wasnt what i wanted but u cant deny the pure experience and story of Mass Effect. Every mass effect i played i was soo wraped up in and felt a part of the story. What say you of the USMG community!!!

I know there was a lot of franchises missed out on here. C&C was huge for me growing up along with Starcraft and Age of Empires but I fit into the polls what I could haha... Mass Effect was big as well but compared to the sheer magnitude of the others it can't hold it's own I don't think. Personally of course but I did enjoy ME

Question are we asking about the greatest games ever or the greatest game developers for a series of games?
If ur asking about the greatest developers it would have to be blizzard ie World of Warcraft. You can't dismiss having over 12 million players playing world wide. But game lines that got alot of people started gaming would be Mario.

Seriously, no one is saying Zelda???? That series has always produced quality games on every kind of console (even Game Boy) with people still spending hours looking for new ways to beat it. How many of you can say you have gone back to a game when a new secret is found or just had the nostalgic feeling that LoZ series has produced? I bought the Wii just for Zelda and then sold the Wii once I was done, that doesn't say much, but it does emphasize my fact about how awesome this series is and will be for a LONG time.

Thank the Lord someone else gave Zelda some love. I can honestly say that OOT is my favorite game ever from any console. I have played through and beat it countless times, and to this day it remains the only game I have ever "100%" completed. I keep dreaming of the day that they re-release it for the Wii with updated graphics.

Every one knows Halo is the shit. I don't care what anyone says. Halo was the jump start to 1st person shooter games for the XBOX console. The game brought all sorts of people to buy and switch from PS to XBOX. I know I did.

Yep, it got me interested in FPS gaming period and when I bought my first console, there was no question I wanted the 360 just for Halo.

Well, after playing with the PS3 for several weeks there are definately some perks to both consoles...XBL definately beats PSN, and IMO is probably worth paying for. The Xbox controllers have a better layout, but the PS3 menus are waaay better, and settings are much easier and more convinent to use.

Not too worried about that. I think Blu-ray will be dead in another 5-10 years. People proclaimed Blu-ray vs HD DVD as the next VHS vs Betamax, but I don't think it will end up mattering because it's all going to Internet streaming anyway.

Well, if it was dominant, yes. We are already seeing the beginnings of streaming, and near the end of that 5-10 year period, that will not be when Blu-ray is not the majority, it will be when it is essentially dead.

Even VHS won't be "completely dead" for years, as people still have old home movies, recorded films, and rare out-of-print (is that the right term?) editions that they can't watch on another medium. But for all practical purposes, VHS is dead now. That is what I meant when I said Blu-ray will be dead in 5-10 years.

Yeah, it will be awhile before books go all-digital (and by that I mean the vast majority digital). Music was first, and games and movies will be soon (be it 5, 10, or 20 years), but I think games will be before movies. Books, however, will remain print for much longer. I know I vastly prefer books, especially hardback. I'm going back now and trying to get all of the Star Wars books that were printed in hardcover, and pretty much only buy e-books if they're (a) exclusively digital printings (no hard copies made) or (b) a book I just want to read now and it's available for cheap.

I am a fan of the older RPG games and RTS. Phantasy Star series including the online game on Dreamcast (that's right good ol sega dc). Shining force on genesis. Warcraft and Starcraft. I liked COD when it first came out. I still have the original CD PC game in my storage shed. And when I was younger me and my old man started playing the whole MMORPG realm with Ultimate Online. It was epic.

Aww call of duty really? Metal Gear solid is such an amazing franchise. Literally the last one made me cry, lol never had a soft spot for video games but the story line is amazing in all of them, and then again Halo? Wtf even though halo has dropped off the mainstream wagon with the last games with Halo 3 basically being the falling out point and ODST was right behind t. But FPS's wouldn't be the same if halo was never around, it revolutionized shooters and how they were played until halo all you had was run and gun counter strike, it brought skill set and talent to gaming, and Halo 2 revolutionized online gaming at the console level. Xbox Live would never be what it is today if it weren't for Halo 2 I remember back in early 2004 there was talk about removing Xbox Live from being supported completely. Could only imagine, YEs Call of duty is an amazing game but it really has not impacted gaming as much as Halo, and as a big BIG RED 1 fan back in the day aswell as Call of duty 2 on the 360 I was there since the beginning and though it really is an amazing franchise, well up until MW2 in my opinion or in reality Cod4, it just hasn't impacted gaming like Halo or MGS, which btw MGS revolutionized the aspect of in depth story lines in gaming. Btw Elder Scrolls Series should be up there for revolutionizing RPG's

Yeah it's not a complete list but it is quite varied. CoD never was a big hit for me just a fun game with friends. Halo was big but the Xbox game called "Black" was my favorite shooter on Xbox. I went with FF. That's the RPG revolution right there.

Although, I found a liking for the COD series, for a more pure military perspective (Team and Co-op) I found Brothers in Arms or Operation Flashpoint more realistic... <--- My opinion.
Madden? I preferred the NCAA Football Series (Dynasty mode) yes you spend more time recruiting, divising playbooks, and adjusting rosters, but the dose of realism hits me again...<--- My Opinion.
Borderlands is fun (co-op) ... And Red Dead series (I only played Redemption) was great in the free roam multiplayer modes... Just the dialogue of the AI charaters are classic much like the Oblivion/Skyrim series... "I was a gamer like you until I took a controller to the knee".

Kinda doubt anything would change. While I absolutely disagree that its the greatest, it absolutely is the most prolific, with thousands of people who play nithing but. People can hate it all they want, but the dollar signs don't lie.

Ultimately its so subjective, I don't think it really matters. I mean, the comments people are making give us a glimpse at the mindset of that person, but that's about it. There's simply to many factors that can't be included in a simple poll.

because this is a very subjective topic and relies heavily on personal taste. If the poll were "Most successful (aka best selling) gaming franchise of all-time" then it makes perfect sense as to why CoD is there and has so many votes. More than likely this is the reason people voted for it here. Some people here play shooter games exclusively so when your selection is narrowed that significantly it's again no surprise to see CoD standing out since it is most popular and widely played. As it stands the poll is almost entirely personal preference so none of the numbers really show much more than what a lot of people like playing. For me personally I said Metal Gear because it has been a favorite of mine since i first played MGS on PSone and I still get excited at every new release in the series (MGS5 and MGS: the Legacy Collection anyone?) but I don't believe for a second that it will ever be considered the greatest of all time because MGS just isn't for everyone. Some people don't give a damn about story and cutscenes and press the skip button as fast as the game will allow them to. The series is not for these people. Some want action action action; over the top gun fights and explosions, unloading magazine after magazine into a relentless enemy force....the series is not for these people either.

More than likely, the person who put this up considered having CoD as number one cause it seemed like our whole clan revolved around MWF. Especially when Pak was still around

In a sense it still does revolve around CoD, at least on the gaming side. The site here can be pretty diverse with topics on all manner of things but the majority of the actual game playing seems to take place in the latest Call of Duty game. Don't believe me? Try to get a large group of USMG members together for any game that is not CoD and see what happens. With the exception of games that have come out in the past 2-3 weeks, it just doesn't happen. I was only one month late on picking up Killzone 3 and It was already a USMG ghost town with everyone back to watching netflix or playing CoD. Seen it happen with every game in recent memory

Battlefield I think has been the consistent #2 game for the community. Not enough people play to rival CoD, but it's still active. I don't know now though, Defiance might be more popular than CoD right now.

I'd like to agree, and from the way people talk about it around here it would seem like it. In game, however, is a different story. We've had a couple nights where the 360 side has had 5-7 players on. I can usually count on at least 1 and probably 2 people on. Not what it was once on the PS3 side (man I miss that), but still fun. I think we'll have a pretty good crowd for BF4.

BF4 will be big for both consoles. Honestly I would love for USMG to get away from the CoD only mindset. I have been playing other games lately Gears, Injustice, BioShock, and now Dead Island and it's renewing my love of gaming. CoD is a headache... more so because I have high expectations when playing it. I know we aren't as fanatical about it since you know who left but for the most part this place is much more relaxed and fun or at least I feel it is.

I have to say my frustration level is down and am enjoying gaming a lot do exactly what you said trying different things out. It's not that I have given up on COD but have had fun running some of these other games with members of the community like BF3, Gears, Defiance, and hopefully Dead Island. By doing this it has also made COD fun again as well. Played a bit last week with Port66, on the weekend with Brian, Rob and with HiddenKiller this week and had a blast. None of those sessions were more than an hour or two. I think taking sometime away those expectations I have when playing COD aren't there as much.

I think I would have to say Zelda. It was one of the first to offer a nonlinear story..open world..and upgraded weapons. The stories have always been great with great soundtracks. Now if we could only erase the debacle that is the Philips 3DO game from history.

It's typically the same formula every time that keeps the player on a straight path; the previous dungeon's unique item allows you to gain access to the next dungeon. Sure you can wander around aimlessly in the over world (although not all areas will be accessible without certain items) but the story will only progress when things are done in a specific order. Doesn't keep me from enjoying the series though as it is one of my favorites. I'm currently wishing I had a 3ds with the recent announcement of a link to the past sequel

When you think about it though, its the same concept used by today's open-world greats. You can play around anywhere, but to progress and advance you have to complete certain zones/quests. Red Dead, GTA, Elder Scrolls, Fallout...... all advances on badic Zelda.

But while I dedinitely give it props for starting the idea, I wouldn't call it the greatest, as its been supplanted by many of those greats above.

Should have mentioned that I was referring to the original Zelda as so called nonlinear. Only in the fact that you could do the dungeons in any order you wished....you might get your head handed to you but hey why not give it a shot. I'm glad I picked up the Zelda 3DS when I did...can't wait for the new game. A link to the past was truly my favorite in the series

Meh, the whole point of an MMO is online play, so judging it based on online requirements is kind of like judging CoD or BF negatively because they're shooters.

That being said, this launch has come across as pretty rough, even for MMO's.

I voted based on numbers.I'm not a big fan of most of those games so my opinion is completely unbiased. I voted for Madded because that franchise has probably produced the most revenue for EA. Its been around for at least 20 years and it sells like crazy. When I look at all-time, I look at longevity and Madden has that.

If you voted on numbers, you should have gone with Mario (210 million units) rather than Madden (85 million units). I voted for Halo ('only' 50 million units), because it revolutionized the FPS genre (Arguably the most popular genre right now). (Halo has also made ~$3.4 billion, Madden ~$3 billion)

I would consider any game with Mario in it a Mario game, including Donkey Kong. There's like 9 or 10 just on Wii.
I've never actually owned a Madden game. NHL is my sports game of choice.
