When will we be getting a God of War 4 announcement? It’s the perpetually on-and-off question that feels like it’s been floating around in our heads since the days of Zeus himself. Throughout all of last year, we were teased with rumors about resume postings, job listings, and multiplayer – all to no avail. Yet.

Curious. The God of War series is one of my favorites, next to Assassin's Creed, Killzone, and now that I've played the first two editions...Mass Effect. Still, I look at this as I do Assassin's Creed: what more can you really do?

While GoW3 was one of the first games that seemingly bought out the best uses of the PS3's power, the series itself was seemingly concluded at the end of the last game. I guess there is a still an ace up the sleeve somewhere.

Add one more item to God of War 4‘s prolific history of rumored leaks and leaked rumors.

When we last heard from the as-of-now-unconfirmed fourth installment to Sony’s Greek mythology saga, it was being tweeted about by a retailer during a PlayStation event. This time however, a South African retailer, BT Games, has gone one step further (if such a thing can be measured) and is now accepting pre-orders for God of War 4 on its website.

Is it? Could it be? (OH PLEASE LET IT BE!!)

In the interest of full disclosure, this is speculation and nothing is confirmed. However, the hot topic point to a possible fourth outing for Kratos (or an entry for the PS Vita). I'm also intrigued by a possible Red Dead Redemption follow-up, but I won't hold my breath on that one just yet.

Sony Teases New Game Announcement; Likely ‘God of War 4′

Apr 12, 2012 by Anthony Taormina

Sony has released a cryptic teaser image that many gamers are thinking could be in preparation of a ‘God of War 4′ announcement.

Sony is at it again, this time teasing some sort of game announcement to take place a week from today, on the 19th. Of course, in true cryptic fashion only vague clues are left for the game, leading to rampant speculation.

What we do know about the announcement is that it has something to do with vengeance bringing redemption. Platinum Games has already taught us that revenge plus vengeance equals revengeance, but the real question is what vengeful character might be looking for redemption.

The obvious candidate, and the one that most gamers are running with on Sony’s official Facebook page – where the below teaser image for the game was posted – is God of War 4. There have been rumors circulating recently that suggest a fourth game in the popular god-slaying franchise is in the works, but beyond that it’s been nothing concrete from Sony.

Even if this game does turn out to be God of War, though, there’s also no guarantee that it will be God of War IV. Sony has just released their PlayStation Vita earlier this year, a handheld that could really benefit from some first party exclusives like a God of War.

Still, just because the teaser image makes mention of revenge and redemption, something God of War protagonist Kratos was searching for, doesn’t necessarily mean this announcement will be for God of War 4. Sony has released many a cryptic message in the past, just recently when they announced The Last of Us, and nearly every time, despite fans claiming it has to be God of War, it wasn’t.

Other likely candidates, but ones that have lesser ties to the tagline, include the Sony Smash Bros. Clone or a follow-up to Red Dead Redemption, but in all honestly God of War fits the bill nicely.

We are, however, nearing E3 2012; the place where a full scale God of War reveal is the most likely to take place. Perhaps Sony wants to tease the game first, and then show it off at the industry’s biggest event.

‘God of War: Ascension’ Multiplayer Video and New Details
Apr 30, 2012 by Ben Kendrick

Sony has unveiled the first details on ‘God of War: Ascension’ multiplayer – which allows gamers to join-up in co-operative hack and slash mayhem. Check out the first video of the mode in action.

Following the recent announcement of the God of War prequel, God of War: Ascension, we’ve seen a string of other PS3 exclusive announcements including, most notably, the official reveal of the Smash Bros-style fighter, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Late last week, we even got word of further unveilings in the coming days -- and now we’ve got the full reveal of God of War multiplayer mayhem in Ascension, including gameplay footage of the mode in action as well as batch of new information.

Details on the new mode are, at this point, pretty limited -- and it’s unclear whether the multiplayer in God of War: Ascension will fall under the uninspired, tacked-on, experience category (we’re still looking at you Dead Space 2) or a fun, albeit mostly brainless, offering that adds extended replay ability by way of allowing players to revel in a game’s enjoyable combat mechanics (Mass Effect 3).
The Sony Santa Monica team will reveal further gameplay modes in the future but, at this point, players should be expecting a number of objective-based co-operative experiences -- where teams battle for high scores, critical territories (that, if secured, allow for massive environmental events), among other modes.

Check out this first look at God of War: Ascension multiplayer (via Games Radar) to see what we mean:

Rumors of God of War multiplayer have been circulating for years, some pre-dating the release of God of War 3, and while the mode could provide a fun distraction from the main Ascension campaign, it’s hard to imagine a lot of gamers getting too worked-up about the offering -- especially given that, at this point, very little information has been unveiled regarding what will keep players invested in the mode.

That said, while it’s hard to imagine a lot of die-hard God of War multiplayers, there are some fun options in the offering -- so, even if it is mostly brainless, the experience could be pretty entertaining. In addition to customizing their Spartan warrior, players will select a god to worship (Zeus, Poseidon, Aries, or Hades) -- each with unique special abilities -- as well as select from a variety of weaponry.

As a result, it’s easy to imagine plenty of players hopping online to experiment with friends for post-campaign hack-and-slack mayhem -- whether or not Sony Santa Monica can keep them coming back remains to be seen.

Needless to say, we’re eager for further details -- in order to get a clearer picture of just what God of War: Ascension multiplayer (as well as the single player story) has to offer.

God of War: Ascension Single Player Details
Sony lets loose a few key tidbits.
April 30, 2012

Last week, IGN was lucky enough to take part in an early reveal of God of War: Ascension, one that chronicled some of the game's multiplayer fare. But that left plenty of PS3 gamers wanting. After all, God of War has always been a single-player game and a vast majority of the franchise's fans want to know about Ascension's campaign.

As a result, Sony has given-out some tidbits that should satiate the hungry fan for the time being. "God of War: Ascension is a prequel that will show Kratos' emotional path of redemption, while detailing the rise of his rage to break free from Ares' bond," Sony notes, telling us a bit about what little we already knew.

However, more detail is later given. "Six months after being tricked into killing his wife and child, a younger Kratos is sentenced to a life of madness with the Furies, caged in a titan sized prison for the living damned. Fighting insanity, his will is tested to the limit as he seeks to break his bond and gain the clarity to seek revenge on Ares for his part in the death of his family. Armed with double-chained blades, Kratos must take on mythology's darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest for redemption."

This should put at relative ease the large group of gamers who are displeased that Sony didn't have anything to say about Ascension's single-player campaign, letting them know that Kratos' story is still very much central to God of War. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait longer for more specifics, though perhaps we'll hear something at E3 in just over a month.
