After making the Van Halen guitar cake for my kids last yerar, I was asked to make this one for my nephew's 9th birthday over the last two days. I got hit up about making a couple more specialty birthday cakes at his party, so maybe this will go somewhere.

Nice job River. Did you use that food dye spray paint for the outer red circle? I used it for a POTC cake I made my boys several years ago. It wAs pretty neat to use

Thanks Chele. Yes, I did use the spray-on food coloring. It was a first for me. I had laid a piece of cardboard over main part after I first put the fondant on and then sprayed around the edges. Originally, I had planned to use red fondant for the stripes, but colored fondant only comes in small batches at the stores around here, and I would have had to buy a bunch of it to do the stripes. Also, you may not be able to tell from the picture but the outer edge is sloped just enough to make it difficult to keep a continuous strip of fondant from sliding off. That led me to use the spray-on coloring. It worked like a charm, except that I would up with just a little bit of overspray. As the humidity rose during the day, I noticed that the overspray started to bleed into the fondant and turn it to a pink tint. Nobody seemed to mind, but I was little PO'd about it. It was a learning experience.

Vanilla cake with vanilla icing (under the fondant), per my nephew's request. The mix and icing were sweet enough though.

I don't know if I could do that professionally. From what I've been reading and have seen, vodka is very much a standard tool in decorating cakes. Somehow, the compounds make it ideal to use for mixing with food colorings to paint on fondant.
You don't have to use too much imagination to figure out how much painting I'd actually get done.

Soooooo what your saying is that the next time you have a birthday party, there are going to a lot of people wondering why they have that good feeling running through them...hahaha!

At least I'll be having a good feeling! LOL.
Seriously though, the vodka evaporates as it dries so no chance of intoxicating anyone. But I would be doing something like, "A few drops for red coloring, and a swig for me. A few drops for blue coloring, and two swigs for me."
I've got four more cakes lined up for family members this year, so plenty of time to get some experience (and vodka) in.

Kim says we have 2 B-days this coming month. Kameryn wants a NY Jets cake and Travis... well he thinks like we do and runs around with "I Love Boobies" shirts and "Save The Hoochie" Braclets. We also have a baby shower on April 1st. Damn....seriously Bro. What a way to make some extra beer money. Take the ball and run like Forest Gump!!!!
Great job on the cake. My wife just recently got into making cakes like this as well. She made this one for everyone at my work....Remember Im at MP....haha...The pistol and the traffic cone is actually a giant rice crispy treat...then in the top right corner she stacked doughnuts.

She was buying the reg fondent stuff but that gets expensive so she found a recipe online to where you can make fondent from marshmellows. You should check it out. Its cheaper and I actually think it taste better....

Very well done. Yeah, Rice Krispies become a mandatory ingredient the more you try this stuff.

This was my first shot at making a custom cake. It was supposed to be a cake based off of Eddie Van Halen's classic Frankenstein style guitar. I ran up against a shortage of time, as we were having my kids' birthday outside and there was a storm approaching. The humidity also climbed high and made all the fondant slide off. I wound up making it into a bass (four strings) because I was rushing. The neck and head are rice krispie treats as well.
