Why Call of Duty Still Has Single-Player Campaigns
Call of Duty was always popular, but became a cultural phenomenon only in 2007 thanks to a revised multiplayer system that hooked players with a then-innovative ability-unlocking level-based system.

That year's Call of Duty IV: Modern Warfare became the new GoldenEye, the new Halo... the new multiplayer game that it seemed like everyone who had a console was playing.

Call of Duty multiplayer has become only more popular, now stretching new games of in the series into nine-month-long multiplayer-based "seasons" of new map packs and competitions.

So why, I asked the head of the studio behind this year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, are you even bothering with a single-player campaign? Couldn't you just skip that and still be huge?
"We want to create a campaign," Treyarch studio chief Mark Lamia said. "We have a whole team that's focused on creating the campaign. It's what we do. It's what we want to create. We want to create a campaign, multiplayer and zombies."

Surely there's a business reason, too. Not everyone connects their consoles online, some people (me!) predominantly play the campaign, but I figured this was a good thought experiment at least—and a good test to see if one of the masters of the franchise would bite on the suggestion that Call of Duty could thrive without its story mode.

Lamia doesn't sound like a guy who could picture a blockbuster CoD without a campaign. He sees it as being a crucial third of the experience, along with his studio's co-op zombies modes and traditional franchise multiplayer. "Those all cater to different emotional states," he said. "When you're playing the campaign, you're sitting down to have that sort of epic and cinematic experience, right? You want to have that first-person role in that experience. But multiplayer is all about that competitive and social experience."

Black Ops 2 will have a campaign, of course, one that mostly depicts a near-future cold war instigated by a villain named Raul Menendez who turns the United States' high-tech arsenal of drones and future weapons against itself.

"As creators we wanted to do something new inside the campaign structure," Lamia said, "and make the game play new and unique too and make it something that if you failed, the story would progress and note that you failed." Yes, they're adding failure to CoD campaigns, and, believe it or not, multiple endings.

The failures will be part of the game's unusual new Strike Force mode, which lets players step outside the boots of the game's protagonist David Mason and into the role of black ops squads who must fight proxy wars around the world. You play these missions as a commander and as any of the soldiers, hopping from one to the next as they die. If you fail one of these missions you can try it again, but there will be consequences. "It will actually affect the dynamics of that cold war," Lamia said. He wouldn't explain just how it changes the game, whether it locks off campaign missions, makes the game tougher or what have you. "It doesn't affect difficulty per se," he said, "but it will affect what you experience. It's meant to add non-linearity."

Strike Force adds an interesting wrinkle and argues for the relevance of a Call of Duty campaign. Hell, any sign of innovation on that front does. Just don't expect another trend to infiltrate the campaign. It won't be playable co-op. "For Black Ops 2 and the kind of narrative we're telling it doesn't lend itself well to that sort of situation in terms of creating a co-op campaign," Lamia said. "It was a similar decision point that we made when we were creating Black Ops. It's not a question of technology. We made a game [Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War] that has that, so we're capable of doing that. It's more about what we're trying to create inside the campaign. We put all of the emphasis about co-op into zombies."

We'll have more on Black Ops 2 soon. The game will be out this November.

They had it on BO 1, so I doubt it wouldn't make a return. The question is whether or not they choose to continually enforce it.

GameInformer is reporting on a news tip that Black Ops 2 for the PC will be getting ranked dedicated servers.

The lack of ranked dedicated servers has been sore spot for Call of Duty PC players for the last few iterations of the franchise, but it looks like that may be changing for Black Ops II.

Treyarch’s director of technology recently tweeted, "Confirmed: Ranked Dedicated Servers for #BlackOps2." Modern Warfare 3 had dedicated servers, but they were unranked. This should be good news for PC fans of Call of Duty.

What makes Call of Duty: Black Ops II’s depiction of the future so terrifying? Certainly the fact that its writers envision the world’s technology infrastructure as vulnerable, a digital fortress with the gate wide open. Certainly the hypothesis of Moore’s Law, one of the first angles Black Ops II was marketed from, which suggests that our weaponry in 2025 will possess capabilities unfathomable even by today’s standards.

But what Black Ops II clearly, and frighteningly wants to convey, as evidenced in the latest trailer above showing us the face of its new villain, is that the threat – the individual or individuals with the power to ignite a movement and overthrow the world – can truly be anonymous.

That would explain Raul Menendez. The 60-year old superterrorist is the most wanted man in the world in Black Ops II, hacking into the unmanned weaponry of the United States and China and pitting the two nations against each other. He doesn’t appear as an imposing super soldier a la Modern Warfare’s Makarov – in fact, he looks almost as beleaguered as the geriatric Frank Woods when the two are shown meeting in “The Vault” – and yet he’s amassed a worldwide following by the hundreds of millions.

Black Ops II’s story is being created by The Dark Knight Rises co-writer David S. Goyer, and so perhaps that’s why we see many similar elements from the film woven into the first-person shooter: widespread anarchy; fearsome weapons of war; and an antagonist who appeals to the plight of “the 99%,” but (possibly) is exploiting them for his own rise to power.

Coincidentally – and the trailer makes note of it – just as we’re learning more about the man composing the eventual downfall of advanced civilization, USA Today has also revealed the men composing the soundtrack for such high-action drama.

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who recently composed soundtracks for The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo and The Social Network (a film for which he won an Oscar), has been nabbed to create the Blacks Ops II theme song. Duties for the entire soundtrack will go to Mass Effect 1 and 2 composer Jack Wall.

A man who describes himself as an “avid gamer,” Reznor isn’t a stranger to the industry’s music circles; he also worked with id Software on Quake and Doom 3. After investing himself heavily in two recent film scores, however, the proposal of a theme song collaboration was timed perfectly:

“I started dipping my toe into film scoring. That led me to film-scoring agents and whatnot, and a variety of projects start to get thrown at you to check your level of interest. And quite a while ago I had heard, ‘Would you be interested in a big franchise video game?’ Being an avid gamer my whole life, I said, ‘Yeah, I would be interested in that.

“Coming off of doing two films in a row, I wasn’t looking to really dive into a super big project, so the idea of scoring the theme song for this came up and it sounded interesting to me so I pursued it.”

“There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface,” Reznor says about Black Ops II’s characters, and so he didn’t fashion the score to sound “gung ho” or “patriotic”:

“It has to feel weighty. There is a lot of remorse and apprehension here. So choosing to arrange it a bit more with guitars and drums and aggressively sounding, that struck a tone with [Activision].”

Ranters, Call of Duty is (in)famous for its multiplayer; but does Black Ops II appear to be upping the ante for storytelling and “weighty” narrative themes? Is the addition of Trent Reznor and the composer of Mass Effect 1 and 2, Jack Wall, a sign that Activision/Treyarch is placing significance on more than just sales?

I think the concept of BO2 is a good one. Im just not sure about it. I am going to try it though no matter what i hear. The first black ops had a diffirent impact on many players and i've heard good and bad things about it. I personally didnt like it as much as the MW games. But i did have my fun with it.

From what I read it's a compatibility update for it. U should have same "new" makers next to your barracks and SMG's and on Zombies for that new map. Also they made it where u can live stream your games through YouTube. Can't wait til the 29th.

So I downloaded Revolution yesterday and holy hell did it take a while. The only reason I downloaded it was because I had points left over from the month that I won member of the month. So thanks to you guys, I was able to get it. I do like the new maps and YES you can play the new maps on HC KC. They are enjoyable but damn the campers came out in swarms. So hard to get kill streaks. Anyway, I'm running the PeaceMaker and I like it. Has good damage and its a lot better than the PDW that I'm currently using. I'm getting headshots and I'm not even trying to get them lol.

Also, was it just me or did you guys get kicked from LIVE last night. I got kicked at 9pm EST and couldn't log back in. It said there was something wrong with LIVE and that if the problem persisted I should contact support. I said fuck it and went to bed. Sorry to Hidden and Wicked, as I was about to roll with them. I'll be on tonight for sure
