New Mechromancer Class, Character Customization Coming To Borderlands 2

During their PAX East panel today, members of Gearbox announced that Borderlands 2 will be adding a Mechromancer class and character customization to the massive shooter. Rather than a stock assortment of gear and costumes, players will have to earn their new wardrobes.

New gear, costume pieces, and even custom heads can be acquired by completing missions and challenges, as well as ranking up. In addition, players of the original Borderlands will immediately be rewarded with an exclusive head and skin.

The Mechromancer is yet to be developed, and will be made available as post-launch DLC. This female character seems to be a mix of human and machine, and can control a large robot known as D374-TP (Deathtrap). The character will be made available for free to those that pre-order the game. There is no ETA or pricing available for the Mechromancer yet, but Randy Pitchford said he hopes to price it at a level "comparable to most DLC." Also announced was a special edition of the game that will retail for $149.99, and comes packaged in a loot box from the game. You can see the package, which includes a Marcus bobblehead and a copy of the game, below.

The 2K section of PAX East’s main exhibition hall was arguably the most dominant and hard-to-miss showcase of them all. Certainly, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III booth and Rockstar’s enormous Max Payne 3 banner drew convention-goers’ eyes, but the main event was, without question, the Borderlands 2 booth, complete with life-sized statues of the game’s new characters — Salvador, Maya, Axton and Zero.

Hello again! You were so nice to me the last time around, I thought I’d come back for another visit. We at Gearbox were delighted to see the enthusiastic response to our recent Borderlands 2 posts. But that wasn’t enough. You see, Borderlands 2 is all about MORE. More weapons, more enemies, more story, more environments, and most of all MORE LOOT. A commenter on one of the previous posts said, “You’ll get my pre-order as soon as the collector’s / limited editions are revealed in full.” Well, “Baron_Von_Bonbon,” that day has arrived as we’ve recently announced our Borderlands 2 Deluxe Vault Hunter’s Collector’s Edition and Borderlands 2 Ultimate Loot Chest Limited Edition.

However, you also had more questions, and we have the answers! Character customisation options, voice chat, Mechromancer, a unique reward for Borderlands 1 players – I’ve done my best to answer as many of your questions about Borderlands 2 as possible. Read on…

Can we expect better more consistent framerate this time around? (via @Is_It_JustMe @Iantheausguy)
That’s certainly the plan! We’re entering the phase of development right now where we are focusing on framerate and stability, so it’s too early for me to give any final numbers, but you will see an improvement over the first game.

Can a second player on local splitscreen be logged in to a separate PSN ID and gain Trophies and stats? (via @frag123456)

We’re looking into this as well, but right now the answer is no.

The only important question: will voice communication be fixed? It was unusable in BL1. (via @keithschon)

Good timing – you’ll hopefully be pleased to know that a portion of our programming team is working on voice chat issues right now so they will be working for everyone when the game launches!

Will there be more character customization (individual skills, armor, etc) than in the first one? (via @justtom2012)

You’ll be able to choose from a large variety of swappable heads/hairstyles/headgear in addition to choosing from hundreds of unique color and decal themes, and both together offer a ton of options for customization. As for skills, each class offers a bigger quantity and more interesting variety of skills to choose from in the skill trees.

Will vehicle-based gameplay be enhanced? It was fairly basic in the original game.

We’re introducing a new vehicle, the Technical, which can hold 4 players at once and also has a few weapon configurations to choose from. Some are better than others depending on the types of enemies you’ll face and the environment you’ll be fighting in. On the other hand, Borderlands is mainly a game about weapons and loot so we don’t want to force people to stay in vehicles for too long.

Will there be a shortcut button for health kits? Going thru your backpack sucks, especially during battles! (via @TheVic82)

Yeah, that sucked. Pausing wasn’t really fun in combat. It was a tough decision, but we decided to remove carryable health packs and instead fill that need with new relics and shields that can help keep you out of that emergency state to begin with. The result is a more fluid combat experience since now you’re not worrying about when the best time to pause the game is and you still get that fun sense of preparing for a battle by choosing the right gear.

Health Packs will still appear and drop and they will now heal you up in the middle of battle.

What enhancements have you made to the weapon interface, inventory, and pickup system?

We have a completely new inventory screen and all of the other interface screens have received various upgrades. There’s a lot more useful data for gear comparison and also more descriptive text on the item cards as well. Having said that, the best way to know what a gun does is to use it – and some weapons are *very* special…

Money and ammo now automatically pick up if dropped from enemies as well!

Will the environments be more varied, instead of one big desert? (via @DoctorMous3)

Absolutely! We’ve shown a tundra, cavern, grasslands, and Hyperion tech environments so far, but there are many more in the game – I think you’ll enjoy the environmental diversity in BL2.

What are you doing to extend the variety of enemy types and combat encounters?

There are brand new enemy families in Borderlands 2, and the total count of unique enemies (including special elemental variants with unique AI) is in the triple digits. New environments + new enemy types and behaviours = much more varied combat encounters!

So when will we get the Mechromancer class and is it a exclusive to any version of the game ? (via @Tenkisin)

We’re hoping to release her to the world as soon as possible – but we have to get the game through the certification process as right now she only exists as a sketch and we need to finish up Borderlands 2! The good news is that the Mechromancer will be compatible with all versions of the game and she will be free if you preorder at participating retailers through the Borderlands 2 Premiere Club!

Is the story going to be more cut-scene based like UNCHARTED, or more audio log based like the original BL? (via @Ejsponge61)

We’re mixing it up a bit this time: few short cutscenes (and title cards) where necessary, lots of in-game moments, ECHO logs, missions, and environmental storytelling – not to mention the significant NPC improvements we made so it doesn’t just feel like a cardboard cut out of a dude is sending you on a quest.

What’s great is that we catered it towards both audiences that love story telling through NPCs and those who prefer to go kick some ass! If you choose to do the latter, you can run off as the NPC is talking to you and the discussion will appear as an ECHO transmission. No chains attached!

Yes, if we detect a save file from the first game on your console then you’ll be rewarded with a unique swappable head and skin for every class!

We’re balancing the game to cap at level 50; in the first game we ended up pushing the cap to 69 through post-launch patches and DLC. I don’t have DLC plans for Borderlands 2 yet but we tend to want to one-up ourselves each time, so… we’ll see what happens!

As far as I know it didn't hit national. But quite a lot of gamer and tech sites posted articles about it and linked the eulogy for everyone to listen to. Either way it's an A+ effort for them to show support to their fans like that.

I still have a modded shield after the whole patchwork etc. It's called the "The Rose" The Alpha and the Omega is it's description lol... I remember going to pick up a bunch of weapons after this really good guy I was playing co-op with dropped them and just started grabbing stuff and then BOOM haha!

No, there were some equipment and modded guns that still worked after patch. So long as you didn't mess with their values after it was all said and done. because if you tried to adjust the values of the equipment, then the file would become corrupted and you lost everything and I do mean everything. Another down side to modding after patch, was that if you were foolish enough to change your LVL to 100 before patch... after the patch if you were LVL 100, you were instantly corrupted, the second you tried to load the save file. But if you changed your LVL to something like 50, you couldn't LVL any higher than that. Even if you played through all the content normally, I think it was Gearbox's way of saying "screw you" lol.

The gaming industry lives in a curious place right now. It’s male dominated -- sometimes to a smugly elitist degree -- and hypersensitive to its own undercurrent of sexism. So when John Hemingway, lead designer on Borderlands 2, told Eurogamer that the sequel to Gearbox Software’s surprise 2009 hit would include an easier-to-play character featuring, "for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree,” he essentially charged face-first into a live skill saw of controversy.

In fairness, this came right on the heels of several egregious examples of abusive behavior directed at women. That’s on top of the harassment girl gamers put up with on a daily basis. Now “girlfriend mode” seemingly announced to the world how the ladies just aren’t good enough to play video games without a lot of coddling.

Except that’s not what Hemingway said, and that’s not what “girlfriend mode” is for.

I’ve met a legion of female players who could cheerfully take me apart in any game of my choosing. And I’m here to tell you that a “girlfriend mode” addresses a real use-case scenario, one the industry must understand better and should cater to in every co-op game and that is neither sexist nor elitist. Quite the opposite, actually.

With an estimated 72 million male gamers in the United States alone, it’s no shocker how a lot of them try to bring their ladies into the gaming fold early in the dating process. This little hobby takes up a significant amount of time...better to share it together than spend it in different rooms. I know a few game journalists who eased their girlfriends into gaming -- one even used Borderlands as the last step in his master plan [editor's note: That's me! -Shoe] -- and a few who broke up in part because they couldn’t.

Meanwhile, developers struggle to make hardcore games that appeal to women...a colossal demographic they largely miss out on.

I actually had this discussion with my wife a few weeks back. She has a very narrow window when it comes to games that interest her. Must be co-op -- she doesn't play solo. No complex control schemes or leveling systems. Preferably not too gory. Best if she plays as someone she can either identify with or ignore completely. Halo works just fine. She took a stab at Gears of War, but slab-of-meat-and-testosterone Dom didn't fit.

And by her own admission, she's not especially talented. Good enough to have fun, but she prefers to think of herself as a support player, doing her part while I take care of major threats.

The Mechromancer is Gearbox’s answer to those problems. Borderlands 2 ties its “girlfriend skill tree” to this single character type, a female cyberpunk with a softcore leveling curve and special perks designed to let a less-experienced player advance at the same speed as an expert.

The developers basically handicap the players to level the playing field. That's an idea with a lot of merit, even if the official name -- Best Friends Forever -- fails to impress any more than the unofficial "girlfriend" label.

But here's what really separates "girlfriend mode" from the real and staggeringly ugly sexism in the industry. When Aris Bakhtanians, the coach of team Tekken on the Capcom-sponsored reality show Cross Assault, verbally abused teammate Miranda Pakozdi because he deemed it his God-given right, or when a coward hiding behind the handle "Bendilin" created a Flash game depicting the physical abuse of game journalist Anita Sarkeesian (ironically in response to her Kickstarter drive for a series on sexism in video games), the express purpose was to intimidate and exclude women.

"Girlfriend mode," on the other hand, is by its very nature inclusive. It doesn't tell anyone to shut up and go away. It's designed to bring people in, make them comfortable, and make it easier to participate. Nobody's required to play a Mechromancer. It's not for gamers, male or female. It's for people who want to play with gamers.

So while "girlfriend" might frequently be accurate, it's far too limiting. This mode works for anyone who's new to gaming and everyone who doesn't possess the skill set but still wants to play. That could be fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, roommates, wives, and yes, boyfriends. Hemmingway did say the "girlfriend" phrase stuck "for lack of a better term," so let's give it one. Sidekick mode. Wingman. Support. Co-pilot.

And while we're at it, don't stick this feature on one character type and pat everyone on the back. Make it a toggle for every character class, or the inclusiveness still comes with a slight stigma. Inclusiveness means handing out the all-access pass.

If you want to get serious about sexism in games, let’s talk about barring Bakhtanians from competing in professional tournaments for the next three years. John Hemingway didn't do himself any favors throwing out a gender-inflected nickname in a time of heightened awareness, but the ideas behind it are sound. Laudable, even. It should absolutely become an industry standard across the board. If it does, whatever "it" is called, I don't doubt for an instant it'll prove invaluable to a great many girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, wives, family, and friends, allowing unequal players to enjoy games on equal terms.

And really, you'll never find a better answer to sexism and bigotry than equality.

I really like that piece on getting non-gamers a supporting role where they can play but not let it be too overwhelming. My wife, when we were dating, was more of a stay at home person like me. We both liked movies and tv shows and where I had my XboX and PS3, she had WoW. I used Army of Two: The 40th Day to get her interested in shooters. Once we beat that we moved on to Borderlands and we've actually not ever beaten it because she wanted to give Modern Warfare 2 a go. She was actually pretty good, and we both love hearing kids nerd rage. It was quite a bonding experience since, like the article says, video games do take up a lot of your time especially just trying to keep your skills up can take at least an hour or two each day. This game is going to be great for relationships let alone just be a great gaming experience in general. I'm def getting mine on release day.

Played w Stone last night for a minute, then wifey lost all bearing and composure and I had to bunker down till the shelling stopped(sorry Stone), but yea, I'm a total noob so I tried to keep up w him as he ran a wake of epic destruction through mission after mission! i never finished the game's dlc ... so ive been replaying this game..i forgot how much i missed it!.. finished Doc Ned Isle... i have yet to beat Moxi.. almost several times!! all three doors..sooo close..still working on that one.. and almost finished Gen Knox's .. thats a tuff SOB.. but i hear Crawmerax is a bitch not looking fwd to that .. and have yet to start Claptrap revl... ive got roland almosted maxed and Mordecai about half way..

i did get my hands on the PC version of this..BL-GOTY.. i got it working on our Intra-Net here for sat game night.. but forgot you only can run 4 person Co-Op.. so i got three games going at the same time.. wasnt a big hit... young soliders dont know a good game if it smacked them across the face .. so we went back to MW3... sooo over this game... about to hit prestige for the 5th time...i hope blops 2 supports dedicated LAN..

The glitch is pretty common. You can get some legit gear though but be weary if you are an achievement whore. Sometimes it glitches the completionist achievement for the armory.

When you make your way to the Armory Vault after getting the mission from Marcus(it should be his last), you'll first have to whoop Gen. Knoxx's ass. Then go to the door with the color key entry. Enter the colors and go thru the door and turn left, after that you'll notice the floor has silver separations running left to right every couple feet or so. BEFORE you enter the main archway towards the mission objective, walk onto the silver separation in the Arch and kneel down. Move along the silver line until you fall thru the floor into the Vault. Your in! Loot away!

Now, like Jared said, it may glitchblock that achievement. Also in order to get out, you have to quit to the menu, but don't worry it'll save all your gear. Rinse and repeat as much as you like.

Fixed it quite easily. Gamestop gave me new codes and Xbox support was actually quick, friendly and very helpful. So all codes work now. But a bit of a warning for you guys. I read this in the Gearbox forums from the community manager ChrisF (http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showpost.php?p=2738745&postcount=18), but basically the golden key is one use only. Period. Not per character or play-through. One use and gone. So if you want your leveled purple gearbox weapons to be awesome, wait for a higher level to pick them up.

I'll read the thread more tonight to see if it's completely true. But if it is then I'm screwed.

I'm sure a lot of you know this but if you link up in someones game that is a bit further than you, you can rank up faster by fighting stronger enemy's. Yesterday I played with a friend who is a bit further than me, and I jumped up two levels cause I was tripling my xp fighting the enemy's he was fighting. This was done in a short period of time. I want to say in about 30 minutes or so. It was great.

Also I think I found a favorite mod now. Homing Corrosive Singularity grenade mod. It's got 1856 damage output and 272 acid damage per second. I'm one hit killing groups man. Going to have to get more grenade slots.

If you pre-ordered you got a code for the Premier Club which gave you a golden key. You use it on the box near the fast travel station in Sanctuary. The box always gives you rare items that are your level.
