I currently have an Alienware M11x R3 with 6GB of memory. My system can support up to 16GB of memory. The current configuration of memory in the 4 slots are as follows:
- 2048Mb @ 1333Mhz
- 4096Mb @ 1333Mhz
- empty slot
- empty slot
Should I buy 3 4GB memory modules or 1 8GB and 1 2GB memory modules or 2 8GB memory modules:confused:

There is little performance gain from using different capacity DIMMs (just make sure the highest capacity is in the primary slot). You do need to make sure they are all the same performance though (I assume it's DDR3, and that you'll buy more 1333Mhz DIMMs). As expensive as 8GB sticks are right now, I would probably say it'd be cheapest to buy 3 4GB DIMMs - but I haven't done any research on it.

Yup, DDR3 @ 1333Mhz for all of them...which is a good brand to go with? I found some on frys.com which didn't cost much...I waws thinking of getting the Corsair brand...any thoughts on which I should go with?

Compare at Newegg.com and Directron.com price wise. Corsair makes good stuff. PNY, Patriot, G.Skill, and Kingston also make some good stuff. But Corsair is the biggest name in high-performance memory.

I recently read that the new windows 8 is coming out in the fall that can use up to 16g of ram. But at the moment I wouldn't go pass 8.

There is little to no difference - often just a naming difference between manufacturers. Another thing you need to match is the timing and the CAS latency. If those don't match, you could lose some performance.

Actually Windows 7 can use up to 16GB if you have Home Premium (which is the OS I would suggest getting) and 192GB if using Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate. Are you going to use 16GB? Probably not, unless for some reason you like running Crysis, Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Adobe Elements all at the same time. But if you want your computer to last awhile, then 16GB is fine to get with how cheap memory is.

Can you explain your reasoning? If he uses 2x8GB, he's already maxed out the computer and can't use the other slots anyway. 8GB DIMMs for Laptops run about $60 each, while 4GB DIMMs run about $20...and he only needs 3 4GB DIMMs since he already has one.
