My wife uses ancestry.com. She has been trying track down her side and my side. Ancestry.com was a huge help on her side, she tracked he mother and father's lineage back to like 400A.D. Her parents line came from decently well off families (not rich, but well to do) and a lot of paper has followed them.
My side however, my grandmother grew up as an orphan in a convent and my father's side are basically german/russian gypsy's in which ancestry.com was not the best tool.
All ancestry.com will do is hook you with other people in your family tree and provide quicker resources to census and other paperwork that helps in tracking down relatives. Technically, you can find a lot without the website by just looking through census records IF your family hasbeen here for awhile and was legal. I am only second generation born in America and trying to go through records in Europe tends to be tough when you can't speak the language or the records were destroyed in wars.
I would recommend finding out as much as you can through free sources and then use ancestry.com a month or two at a time. Also, be sure to get an adequate history from your elders because that will help when it comes to figure out who's who.

yeah while on Vacation once my wife tried one of these genealogy store up in Helen GA... found out i come from Scottish Royalty .. and her family was from the Welsh parts of the UK.. paid for these crazy ass plaques(very nice but a little pricey) .. so when i got home signed on to a few of those websites and found out most of what they had pulled up was true.. wow didnt expect that.. but i have a feeling that is more generally vague kinda like reading Tarot.. more of what you want then what it really says...so who knows but ive looked it up .. really cool crest, coat of arms and tartan pattern
