Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Preview -- Hands on with Guerilla Mode

Considering the heavy (and practically mandatory) focus of four-player gameplay in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, it’s not surprising that Ubisoft would add a Horde-inspired multi-wave mode to complement the primary, story-driven component of the game. Ubisoft has dubbed it Guerrilla Mode and the developer/publisher sees it as a follow-up to the Terrorist Hunt mode from previous Tom Clancy games.

Ubisoft gives some near-compelling reasons to give Guerrilla a chance even if you’re the type of player who finds 50-wave battles in other games monotonous but still like playing with friends against bots. Initially available across four maps (not counting pre-order maps and to-be-announced DLC), the 50 rounds are broken up into five sections, 10 rounds each. The first round of each section is an infiltration mission after which you need to hold the infiltrated area for the next nine rounds.

You’re incentivized to be as stealthy as possible during these infiltration rounds, as your team performance determines the score multiplier for the subsequent rounds. Holding this temporary HQ for the next nine rounds poses a challenge, because your squad cannot take the fight to the enemy and leave the HQ vacant at the same time. This also makes for a prime opportunity for a situated sniper to shine. In contrast to the sneaking component, every tenth wave pits your team against the strongest assaults, which includes at least one vehicle.

As we made it to the eleventh round, it was time to move camp and sneak into another part of the map. It was amusing and curious that the new HQ we had to infiltrate was only about 80 yards away; you’d think that the soldiers guarding the place would know we’re nearby. Whereas the first area was a flat, ground level open space with moderate cover opportunities, the second HQ was in what appeared to be a small rundown warehouse. This was also a two-story base, and had I spent more time to get familiar with the space, I probably would have used the higher ground to my advantage. I think I just wasn’t used to the plethora of columns that blocked my shot as I switched from third to first-person view.

Clearing consecutive rounds yields a number of very useful consumable bonuses, depending on how many rounds are cleared. Clear three rounds for temporary visibility; clear many more for a powerful air strike. When you consider that each team member gets the same consumable, there's a pretty good chance you'll be ready to hold your own against the vehicles if you earn that air strike.

We only played about 16 waves, but it was more than enough to get a feel for Guerrilla. It looks to be a viable playground to experiment with the same kinds of tools, items, and abilities that are also available in the Future Soldier campaign. Aside from making the most of one’s camouflage, it was equally gratifying to help my squad by tossing digital grenades that discretely revealed enemy locations.

I sawa playthrough of GR:FS and i must say, the game looks really good from what i saw. The active stealth and UI for ur squad members was really interesting to see. Once i get my next paycheck im goin to preorder this game and hope there will be co-op in this.

No official release date for the beta has been announced yet. Ubisoft will release Ghost Recon: Future Soldier on May 22nd.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier launches on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on May 22, but players can get their hands on the game's multiplayer action before then. Ubisoft has announced details on the beta, which is set to go live in a few short weeks.

The beta will begin April 19 and will continue through May 2 on both platforms. Players can check out the rifleman, engineer, and scout classes, and two game modes. In Conflict, players race to complete objectives strewn throughout the map. After 15 minutes, the team with the highest score wins. Saboteur, set to launch April 26, has players scrambling to find a bomb and then deliver its explosive payload at the opposing team's base. Each mode is playable on the Pipeline and Mill levels.

On the Xbox 360, players can access the beta through their copy of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction or by preordering Future Soldier from GameStop. PlayStation Plus members will get access to the PlayStation 3 version of the beta.

In addition to revealing details on the game's beta, Ubisoft has announced the Ghost Recon Network. Players can track their in-game stats, change their loadouts, or manage their squads online using a Web browser or an iOS or Android device. The service is scheduled to roll out when the game is released on May 22.

Definitely liking a lot of different things about it. It has a lot of potential. The spawn tapping, server issues, and frozen load screens gets annoying but its a BETA so I am not expecting an instant masterpiece.

[Xbox 360 only] Grenades are over-powered: we are reducing the grenade blast radius according to your feedback and the analysis of your matches.
[Xbox 360 only] You were confused by the 4-man party and 6-man team matchmaking: we are increasing the maximum party size to 6 in order to align with the team size.
[Xbox 360 & PS3] We are universally increasing the speed of XP acquisition in order to gain additional feedback on the weapons and equipment unlocked later in the character progression system.

In Saboteur use stealth and cunning to capture the explosive briefcase and detonate it on the opposing team's objective. The smithing looks sick! If they fix a lot of the inconsistencies in the BETA like the server issues, the spawn system is a little funky at times, inconsistent killing, and what not this one definitely has potential to be the best multiplayer of the year.

Finally bigger party's! I think the grenade radius is fine...as far as more xp...ok :) and twizted that UAV is a best of anything they should add a time limit to it. I got over 12k points with only 2 kills...

A few lucky Ghosts will be added to the friends’ list of GRFS devs (just before the match) and they will have the opportunity to play with them. The match may be recorded.

DEVS WILL PLAY WITH SELECTED PLAYERS ON MAY 1 BETWEEN 2pm EST AND 4pm EST. For each match, 2 devs will play with selected players. So, turn on your console tomorrow

Do we have an actual squad for GRFS? If so, I'd like an invite. There are certain achievements and such that you get for being part of a squad, not to mention it being easier to keep track of each other's progress and stats. If no one has started on, I'd be happy to do so and send out the necessary invites.

i've only ever taken part in one beta where things transferred over into the full release (Little Big Planet) and it only worked because of the type of game it was. As far as competitive multiplayer goes, people who didn't play in the beta would be throwing a fit that those who played in the beta have an unfair advantage so it's safe to say they reset everything prior to release. All speculation on my part though as I didn't play in the beta but my logic is backed by experience in several beta tests in the past
