AH-64 Apache helicopter crash in Sharana, Afghanistan. Both pilots survived the crash and no one on the ground was injured. The pilots are both facing criminal charges. The cost of an AH-64D helicopter is $38 Million.

The pilot was executing a maneuver known as 'return to target' but had initiated it way to low..... (homer..)DUHHH!!

Were they supposed to be practicing the maneuver?

I'm still trying to figure out the "criminal charges" bit.

I mean, obviously there's going to be UCMJ issues that will be addressed, but it's not like they're going to get shipped to Leavenworth because they crashed. Not unless there's a lot more here than the crash.

That's my question. If they were goofing off I can see UCMJ issues. If they were supposed to be practicing, accidents happen.

no chele they werent... they were trying to show off...

The two ACFT the Army own...the Apache and the Blackhawk have sports car like cockpits and if you ever get to sit down in either... you feel like slipping on some mirrored shades and can swear to god you can hear "Danger Zone" playing somewhere from the back of your brain .... they have a abnormally high hotdogging to crash ratio...lol...

now dont get me wrong a RTT(return to target) is a widely practiced move for Apaches .. we have similar moves while not quite on the book .. practiced quite freq.. zero-g nose over and full power take off... both pretty awesome.. but from where he was at and the footage... looks like he was showing off and hadnt gained enough attitude to perform the maneuver... no one killed was a complete miracle ... thank god for american engineering!!
