Not to contradict your quote at all River, but since I love throwing a monkey wrench in, I'm going to do it anyway. There's a small bit of misinformation at the end there.

The most important line in this article is, oddly enough, the very first one: "Trion's upcoming shooter/MMO is playable on 360, PS3, and PC."

That being said, this game just skyrocketed on my radar.

Honestly, if they don't screw this up, this game could easily become the core staple of the clan, since it's the one game for everyone....where everyone can work together and benefit the clan as a whole.

Hmmm...I would have to play it before I would buy it. I'm usually not a fan of shooters occurring in non-modern times (Halo being the exception), but maybe this could turn out to be real interesting.

If you haven't done so already, you can go to the forums for this game and register. I did so, and it then gave me to option to choose which beta I would like to have a chance to participate in. This April, fire up your PlayStation 3 and dive into Defiance: a massive open-world third person shooter in development at Trion Worlds. Today, we announced a full array of editions (and some sweet pre-order bonuses) but before we dive into that, let me give you a rundown on what Defiance is all about.

Decades ago, arks that carried the six species of the Votanis Collective to Earth. Their star system had been destroyed and they needed a new home. Unfortunately, their peaceful intentions led to a planet-wide war that culminated in the complete destruction of their ships. Their great terraforming machines crashed to earth and the face of our world was changed forever.

Fifteen years later, you take on the role of an ark hunter, a specialized scavenger who digs through the rubble of the fallen arks to uncover advanced technology, weapons, and other valuable loot. You have been hired by Von Bach Industries to find powerful ark technology capable of repairing our now broken planet. Armed with special abilities provided to you by your EGO (a nano-device that is injected directly into your body) you must brave the dangerous Bay Area frontier in order to find arktech. To survive, you will need to upgrade your EGO, increase your power level, and customize your weapons. To succeed, you will need the help of others. This is not a world where you can go it alone.

Having spent several hours getting to grips with Defiance, it's clear that Trion's ambitious cooperative MMO shooter currently allows for smooth cross-platform play between PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. However, Microsoft and Sony aren't willing to set aside their bitter rivalry for long enough to make it work at launch - if ever.

"There will not be cross-platform play," Trion Worlds Senior Producer Robert Hill told us during a lengthy interview scheduled for publication later today. "We do it right now."

"You can see all the PS3s and PCs," he continued, gesturing at the trestles full of preview stations. "They are playing on the same server. Every day, we play Xbox 360, PS3 and PC together. Unfortunately, at launch, Microsoft and Sony aren't really friendly with each other so they won't let us do that cross-platform play."

Another source, who prefers to remain anonymous, told us that Trion discussed the notion of creating PS3 versus Xbox 360 PvP matches in order to stir up a entertaining rivalry.

Considering that Defiance uses a single compatible build designed to work scalably across all three platforms, it's galling that manufacturer malice will stymie what could have been a new precedent in multiplayer gaming. Still, Defiance is shaping up to be incredibly ambitious as is, seeing as events in the game will feed back into a simultaneously-running TV show on the Syfy channel.

I played the beta some over the last week.....and its pretty intetesting. I'd prefer console controls to pc, but overall an intetesting experience.


And for those wondering why you got a pc invite instead of xbox or ps.....its because the first two beta tests are pc only......which they point out in the sign-up.:p:beer:

Absolutely. It was quite a bit of fun, even at that rough stage. With a metric shit-ton of non-content content to waste time on. And the rough version of the multi was interesting on its own.

Alpha testing is very rough-cut testing. You're ensuring the basic gameplay systems actually function, and that there are no major issues.....like the game freezing, crashing or hitting feedback loops.

Beta testing is more polish testing. The game is in a "near-release" state, and you're less worried about basic systems and more focused on ensuring everything flows correctly, finding minor errors and typos. It's also often used, especially in MMO's, as a check on the gameplay's balance and difficulty.

Interesting. I was invited to do their Alpha test which is on-going. Just did an update and its much more polished than the Beta stress test I did. Had to remake my character and start from scratch. The true voice overs are now there, etc

It's just opposite what I thought. POTCOL had a test server I had access to and whenever they were going to add new content i would get notice to jump on and check it out before it went live. I wonder if this is going to be the same. They said new content would be forthcoming in the email.

I don't think it's unfeasible. Battlefield 3 did one, and it was hugely successful.

Yeah, but that was less a beta, and more of a demo and marketing tool.

They may have gotten some useful information to further tweak weapon balance, or how the add-ons affect players.....but there are only so many markers you can get from 24/7 Metro rush. Made more difficult by a lack of feedback.

That right there is my number 1 issue with public "beta tests" and is what i usually use to determine the difference between a marketing tool/stress test and an actual beta test. I've done several beta tests where the devs heavily encouraged bug repoting and some even implemented forms of reporting during gameplay. The devs could then see the bugs people were finding, apply fixes, and then let people test again to make sure the issue is resolved and didn't create more in the process. there are many phases as more and more patches are rolled out until it's ready to move on to the final stages of production. the other version of a "beta test" that we see more commonly have no focus on any of that. sure they might be able to lurk forums and sift through the typical bs complaining about anything and everything to find the real issues but it's not really the focus, so in truth it's just a glorified demo

Free to play as in no subscription. I'm fairly certain that you still have to buy the actual game......otherwise that $150 version is obscenely overpriced. Not that any of the preorders would be worth ot at that point.....but that one would be kinda crazy.

Not that I doubt you jack, I just hadn't heard much about this game yet so I went over to the website to get more info and couldn't find anything other than a mention of no subscription fees. If it is F2P then that's awesome, I have no complaints with that :-)

True. Jack, maybe it's not super-bold, but it is a big change from halo in that it's an MMO game. And there really aren't that many MMOFPS games out there, and none that are as dominant as Halo was on its genre. I'm excited for it.

Compare to the list of straight FPSs, and the list isn't so long. And how many of those have the team behind them that Destiny does? CoD4 wasn't the first modern combat shooter, but it did it better than others to that point. I'm looking forward to it.

It's definitely possible. I know I won't be preordering, since the used market for this will be pretty much nonexistant. But I'll freely admit if it gets enough solid reviews I may give it a shot.

Just got done playing around an hour or so of the Beta. I have to say its pretty solid, probably more so than any Beta I've played. It's got a good amount of polish for a Beta, more so than some games I've played on release day.
I'm gonna agree that it's pretty much like a Borderlands and MAG hybrid. It's fun so far, I got off because they started server maintenance and booted everyone

I've been playing for about a day. Its definitely interesting, a little buggy for a beta and the feedback forms are annoying but for a beta its pretty good and expansive. It is a lot like Borderlands in the skill department. The storyline is a bit better than Borderlands. I am a little bit more than lukewarm with the game as far as interest. I guess I will post more as it goes.

On what system, Because xbox had a extreme stupid issue. Basicly you had to delete your profile off your xbox, re download then the Beta worked...

deleting your whole live profile sounds highly illogical, I don't see how that would affect the beta client unless the client itself somehow corrupts the system on first use. But then if that were the case you'd probably see a lot more issues popping up as a result. and after a clean install, what would stop it from having the same issue again?

My guess would be that he meant to delete all info regarding the beta only (beta client, settings files, saves, etc) and install again

They patched the login problem today, so xbox is able to participate in the beta. Couple of hours in........not blowing me away.

Soooo..... never had a chance to try the beta and missed a lot. Anyone feel like giving me a brief overview before I go shopping? What is the codes? How is the gameplay? Etc.... Saw a couple previews for the game and show, but between work and school, have not had lots of time to do my normal research into the game.

I'll continue to say it's a great choice if the game works. The servers have had a lot of issues. The game requires some thought and knowledge of how MMOs run is helpful. The codes are to give your characters a bonus.

next go to orcz.com search for the for arcfall codes and you'll get a list of 150 codes

under my ego you have a status bar for every time you input the code you have up to a hundred twenty code after you input all the code you will start receiving your in game items

now when you log into the game go to the Defiance store look at the very bottom or says claim rewards claim all of you rewards and have fun

Alright, so for anyone playing defiance and dosent know to get or know that there are 120 code u need to enter in ur defiance.com ego account. If ur interested in getting all the codes here u go.

First log into defiance.com and sign up if u haven't done so.
Click ur EGO panel, and if u see a progress bar that say 0-120 that is where u will see the status if ur codes.

Second go to www.orcz.com/Defiance:_Arkfall_codes this should show u over 150 codes.
Copy and paste those codes into the space provided in ur ego.

Once u are complete, go in game and look in the DEFIANCE STORE. and look for CLAIM ITEMS bottom right coner.

Claim allbut items and have fun...

As long as your verification goes fine there is no issue. You have to understand our process isn't to offend people it's to ensure that our community remains in the purest form as it should be.
