Soldier to get Medal of Honor 42 years after his death

(AP) ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. - A soldier who died 42 years ago while protecting his comrades is finally getting the Medal of Honor.

President Barack Obama will honor Leslie Sabo, of Ellwood City, Pa., on May 16 at the White House.

Sabo was 22 when he died while trying to save fellow soldiers from a North Vietnamese ambush in May, 1970. Sabo distributed ammo and threw himself onto a wounded comrade to shield him from a grenade blast.

Sabo also charged an enemy position, drawing fire away from other U.S. soldiers, killing several enemy soldiers and forcing others to retreat.

Sabo's widow, Rose Mary Sabo Brown, and his brother George plan to attend the White House ceremony.

WOW! I hate how they give medals for those who deserve them after they are deceased. Show's you how far behind they are at looking into the packets of those who deserve the medals they so rightfully earned.

Hear hear! Mostly because C.O.C's are either too busy fighting or fucking with their bronze stars! Imagine the life he would have had...even for his family. A medal of honor comes with many many many perks and awards...hell, it is even a nearly doubled retirement check...travel, clothing stipends, tax breaks, scholarships....theY tag teamed that dude and his family....good goin' big green weeny.....:mad2:

That the typical, It usually take a state rep to start pushing for some medals long after the fact or a family story in the paper. Heck if you been out of the service for a long period send for an updated DD214, i have done that twice since I got out, one after I got out of the reserves and another about 5 years ago, both times I had more stuff from my active unit listed.

I agree with medals taking forever for people who deserve them, but this would have been posthumously awarded anyway. At least this american hero now gets the recognition he deserved 42 years ago.

Yeah that's what I was saying. He wouldn't have recieved it anyway, but it would have been nice for his family's sake.

At least his wife and brother get to be there. My guess is the people that really missed out is his parents. They never got to see their son recognized.

In my humble opinion it is usually the parents, spouse, and kids that get the benefit of recognition for a MOH........and I am totally fine with it. Most families never get the recognition they deserve.
