Back in January "LadyM123" started a thread on "Rabies." I just read this article posted on the Fox News website: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2012/05/03/us-soldier-dies-rabies-after-dog-bite-in-afghanistan/?test=latestnews

It's sad that the soldier had to suffer the way he did. As I said before, we had one soldier get bit on patrol and they Medevac him and the dead dog out so testing could be done. The test came back positive for rabies. The soldier got treated and had no medical problems with the remaining deployment or since.

That freakin blows. Now here's the big question. Does he receive a proper military burial and will his beneficiaries get the money from his SGLI?

I'm almost certain the family will get the SGLI money. When I was a reserve unit administrator, we had a kid get killed in a car wreck during a non-battle assembly weekday. His ex-fiancee' did wind up getting the SGLI (she was the only beneficiary he had named at the time, unfortunately for his mom and dad).

I believe the military burial would be at the request of the family, if they wanted it. He died while on active duty, so I don't see why they would deny him of that.

Yeah that seems right for a military burial. Unfortunate though very sad..

What gets me is that i'm sure the kid who got killed in a car accident was wearing seat belt and was probably in the right when he was killed. This person, who on active duty and deployed, played around with a dog (with no idea it had rabies) and died from a bite. I'm not sure if there is a regulation about having pets on a fob, but soldiers bring stray dogs to the fob to keep moral up all the time. If the Army wanted to be a dick, they could pull the card of saying that pets are not allowed to be touched or brought to the fob due to diseases. Therefore, the beneficiaries of the soldier who died, will not receive his SGLI. The military can get G.A.Y when it comes to dishing out 400K over a bite. I'm sure investigations will come in to play and shit may hit the fan when it comes to the money part.
