So the radio world is absolutely abuzz with the Avengers $200 mil domestic opening weekend. You can say that this movie absolutely lived up to every inch of it's hype.

So what movies have lived up to the hype, and what fell short?

*disclaimer* Movies are absolutely subjective. So if someone throws out one that you absolutely agree or vehemently disagree with, say so. But more importantly, say why.

The Dark Knight lived up to its hype and then some. I saw it at a Midnight showing so no one really knew how well the Joker was casted but he definitely gave the performance of a lifetime. One of those movies you leave the theatre and it's all you can talk or think about and you talk about it at work for a week straight.

Avatar. I watched it 5 times. Yea I used a bit of my life watching it but you know what, I liked it

For me, the one that best lived up to the hype was Avatar.

Avatar, I skipped until the DVD release, because I refused to believe that a space-age "Dances with Wolves" could be as amazing as it was hyped to be. I figured it'd be decent on blu-ray, and had to nearly beat my wife to force her to watch it with me. By the end, I was blown away and it's one of her favorite movies now.

On the other end of the spectrum was The Expendables. Yep, that's right. Expendables was decent, I enjoyed it.....but it was so blah. I honestly think RED, Bruce Willis / Morgan Freeman, was what it should have been.

Honorable mention: Watchmen. Major hype, my least favorite comic movie. Never read the book, but there was way too much blue dong with a weird ass story.

yeah i agree the hype was well deserved for avatar.. i had to drag my wife to watch the blue ray and sure as shit its her favorite too... it will be interesting to see if avengers can match it? i always wondered what would knock off avatar from top spot?? it took what just over 10 plus years for titanic to get knocked off the pedestal ? can avengers knock avatar off?? only time will tell

Seriously though, why the fuck does it take him almost the entire movie to put on a pair of Hanes?

And I absolutely agree Crzy. It'll be interesting to see how Avengers does compared to Avatar. Moreso since Avatar had two theater runs.

Avatar was the best movie I've every seen in a theater and it lived up to the hype and then some. I left the theater and wanted to go right back in and watch it again (which is unbelievable considering i fall asleep during movies all the time). It felt like it took me inside another world and i wanted to go back for more.

The dark knight is a close second though as I'm a huge Batman fan. I waited to see that in the imax theater over here and it was epic!

I strongly disagree with Avatar. The visuals were good, but nowhere near spectacularly and there were only about a grand total of 3 minutes of impressive 3D footage. Add in the ultra hippie anti-military anti-capitalist message (more overt than normal), stupid names (unobtainium? Really?), subparagraph dialogue, and a weird retelling of pocahontas, and it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Dark Knight absolutely lived up to every bit of hype, as did Lord of the Rings. The Avengers was to me a good popcorn flick, but nothing sensational (to be fair, I normally HATE superhero movies, so that's saying something).

You also have to look at Avatar in a different aspect. With all the negativity that is going around the world, having a movie that can bring the negative aspects of a world and mix it in with a love story create good vibes amongst people. All the talk about war and the planet being in some sort or chaos. This movie helped bring an emotion people haven't felt in a long time. Hence why so many people watched the movie more than once.

Some movies that I wouldn't say were hyped up but ones that I really enjoyed and hope the series continues to impress was the new Star Trek and Sin City... just thinking they could do a lot with them if they keep the ball rollin' in the right direction. Personal preference of course I don't think they were very groundbreaking in the sales dept.

Gotta disagree with that one. The story isn't new, but nowadays very few are. The visuals, and more importantly the tech behind those visuals, were genre defining and a major step forward in cinematics. From that perspective, it was absolutely amazing.

But like I said earlier, movies are one of the most subjective topics you can discuss.

Hunger Games! Good movie, but not at all what it was hyped up to be in my opinion. I think the movie could have been portrayed a little better if the kids would have been able to really show there strengths for survival a little more. On another note It almost seemed to me to be rushed. Every aspect of the movie kind of left me hanging a bit. I understand that the end of movies should leave you on the edge of your seat, but I didn't ever get that feeling from the movie. I may have just had super High expectations for the movie. But in my opinion it let me down quite a bit.

Did you read the books? I thought it was good, very entertaining, but I did see parts that were rushed/undeveloped, and some of my friends who haven't read the books found parts to be confusing. Still a good movie, but could have been done better.

Inception, Shutter Island, and, (going old school here,) Willow are some of my all time favs. Stories are great, and I could easily watch them once a week for the rest of my life. The movie Taken is also another one.

The one movie that's disappointed me most has been Indiana Jones 4. I'm sure there's a few others but my brain isnt working well tonight. But seriously, aliens in Indiana Jones movie? Doesn't fly right with me one bit.

I def agree with you on the movie Crystal Skull. Way to much hype was put forth to this movie and it ended up being a terrible movie. I'm a huge fan of the Indiana Jones series and this movie didn't live up to the standards. Probably cause back in the day graphics weren't used as much and there was a ton of CGI used in Crystal Skull to make it realistic. The simplicity of making movies has gone out the door. CGI is the go to now a days. Don't get me wrong, i'm not a hater when it comes to CGI technology, but many movies wouldn't have survived without CGI and in the case of Crystal Skulls. Nope didn't work out to well.

I'm not going to watch it until I get a chance to read the book, but I'm not surprised in the least that the first one feels slightly rushed. They're trying to create the next Harry Potter / Twilight franchise while the concept is still frrsh.

I am actually reading these now since I finished A Dance with Dragons and may have to wait another 6 years for the next one. Anyway, I have not seen the movie yet but the books are enjoyable.

They really do not take long to read Spyder. I read the first one in less then 24 hours and I started reading Catching Fire last night(2/3 into it).
