So played it through and would love to write a review on it unless someone else has already planned that out....I've been a huge fan of the Alien series through the years (even watched Prometheus)

here's my review:

Review for Aliens: Colonial Marine

Writers note: I am a huge Alien series fan so I was coming into the game being very critical of the game.

Story line:
The game is set 17 weeks AFTER the Aliens movie so the Alien 3 story line has already happened. So this game fills in some unanswered questions.

Game Play:

Single Player:
The game feels like any other FPS out there at first. You have your hud and weapon options. You get a mission and head out….it's once you encounter the Xenomorphs that the game shows where it stands out from other games out there. There is no mini-map…you use the Motion Tracker to find your way around and figure out where enemies are. When you play the game (especially with headphones) and you hear the ping of movement your heart rate quickens. The other interesting part is that you're not limited to two primary guns and a sidearm. When you access the weapon wheel you pull up all the guns you have unlocked up to that point. Also there are 6 Legendary weapons that Alien fan buffs will recognize…Four become permanent unlocks and can be used in SP, CO-OP and MP. Two are only usable on the current level.

As you play you level up giving you credits to upgrade your weapons, this level is used through all game styles (Single Player, Co-Op, Multiplayer)

CO-OP is drop-in/out and can support up to 4 players, each player plays their own created character that they use in MP, it follows the story line you played in Single player.

Multiplayer:

Multiplayer is broken into four styles and in all styles you play both Marines and Aliens.
Marines use the weapons they've unlocked through leveling up in Single Player and as they level up in game.
Aliens choose between three style of Xenos and level up only in multiplayer (can become difficult to level up sometimes)
Soldier: good HP, powerful attacks using both claws and tail
Spitter: Ranged attack, low HP
Lurker: fast mover, can pounce onto Marines.

The four game styles
Your typical Team Deathmatch. Instead of switching sides at the end of the round you switch from Aliens to Marines and Vice Versa.

Extermination: An interesting take on Domination style gameplay. Instead of two teams trying to hold certain spots until the timer runs down and then move onto the next spot the teams are split into a team of Marines and a team of Aliens. The Marines mission is to hold on of two spots at a given time long enough to arm a bomb and destroy the eggs in those spots. The Aliens job is to defend the spots. Then the teams switch, the team with the most "captures" at the end of the game wins.

Escape: Marines are tasked to do certain things to escape the map. As they go the Aliens will try to stop them using the three characters in different ways. Aliens have unlimited lives but will have a cool down period. Marines have one life but will go into a last stand style when knocked down so they can be revived. After the Marines either escape or all knocked down then the teams switch. The team who gets the furthest or quickest escape time wins.

Lastly there's Survival: Humans hold down a spot randomly welding doors shut, placing auto turrets and fighting off the Xeno's in hopes of surviving.

Environment:
The planets surface is a strange place from what we remember from the Aliens movie, graphically wise it seems a little dated compared to other games out there. Coming across Hadley's Hope and seeing the after effects of the Processing Station exploding is amazing. Audio wise the game is amazing. From the screech of the Aliens, the sound of the Pulse Rifles and the pings of the Motion Tracker brings back old memories. Also getting Lance Henriksen and Michael Biehn to voice their characters was amazing (Bishop and Hicks respectively)

The AI seems flaky…Xenos jump off the ceilings on normal and run head long into your gunfire, on Ultimate Bad-Ass they are a little smarter and stick to ceilings and walls, making you aim.

My Bottom line: The game has the ability to be amazing if they can fix the AI issues, plus finding all the hidden items in game opens so much more of the story line of what happened AFTER the Aliens movie. Also MP is a lot of fun.
Overall Review
Pros:
-Ability to access any weapon you unlock as you go
-Sound is amazing and brings back memories of the movies
-Multiplayer has it's great moments
-Stepping into the shoes of a Marine and firing off a Pulse Rifle is a dream come true

Cons:
-AI seems to not be quite on the level expected of the galaxy's foremost killing machine
-cut scenes and some backdrop graphics seem dated compared to what we're used to
-Multiplayer can become difficult as an Alien against people who have played the Single Player numerous times.

Final Score:
6/10

yeah the game was good just gearbox had so much at their disposal and it felt like they spent more time setting up the character voices than graphically wise. I mean there's little easter eggs EVERYWHERE that nod at the movie (an achievement is you find Newt's doll in the sewers) that makes up for certain things. Have come across a few glitches, one was joined an escape match and was playing in 3rd person view then had no hud or weapon in hand (thank god I had a laser sight on my gun).

Hey Lou, I ran into an issue last night, after I found Hicks shotgun I mistakenly traded it out for my Pulse Rifle. So now I'm stuck with two shotguns...where/how do I customize my load out? I can't seem to find this option. And as I'm continuing thru the game, I still have two shotties, I need to change this as I HATE shotguns

I'm loving the game so far, as MjolnirActual said on Facebook, this game is a love letter to Aliens fans. And it is. And it also supports Gearbox's SHiFT code system, so you know there will be some interesting shit coming soon. Stay tuned to Gearbox's Twitter and Facebook pages...,

It's fine. It's not a problem to have multiple reviews as long as they're well written.

OK maybe Havok and I are in a minority but I honestly am rather happy with the game. I'm a about to the end of the single player campaign and I like it quite a bit. Now first and foremost this is not a dyed in the wool FPS, if you are looking for the polish of a BF3 then you are just not going to find it here.

What you do find is as I said before a love letter to Aliens fans. There is so much crammed into the environment to enjoy if you know the movie(s). There are "Legendary Weapons" and dog tags, and tons of little quiet things (that I am die'n to talk about but will not spoil) that in one case had me laughing so hard I damn near woke up my sons and got in a bit of trouble by the wife for being too noisy.

The fact that they got Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen to voice characters is freak'n awesome!

Like I said I may be part of a minority but I think it's a good game and that as a genre piece it is awesome.

I also don't think Gearbox and SEGA should be taking this much heat ... the internet is fraught with assholes as we are all too well aware.

IMHO

:)

Steel press and hold Y that will pop up your loadout, then press up or down and the radial will pop up and let you choose the weapon you want.

Mjolnir it's not that I didn't like the game...I loved it I just expected more from them. They were handed the keys to a great series and I felt they could have done better. Plus I love the twist with the rescue op. I did the review as a fan and as a gamer.

So from both spectrums a 7.5/10 would be a fair grade?

Loukious
02-13-2013, 17:08
yeah...I mean there are still plenty of bugs....wall glitches and sometimes the weapons glitch back to old set ups that I was trying to go away from. But a 7 or 7.5 is fair.

I agree with Actual here, I like it quite a bit and playing on the harder settings really Amps up the tension! I feel it to be a fitting addition to the Aliens canon and I love all the little "extras" in here too.

Um...I wouldn't bother. After playing this for awhile and experiencing the near game breaking bugs and glitches, I plan on selling it back to GameStop. I loved it at first but the sad truth is its just not a finished game.
