I think the general consensus is intel is ahead of the game. Of course a lot depends on how multi-threaded applications are optimized vs AMD and intel. Intel or AMD you can still get good gaming system. Depending on points like budget for example when building a system, may weight some opinions. Researching all of of this a few months back, since I built a system, I went with Intel. But if someone gave me the system above I would surely not turn it down.. :)

Well of course not. Just the consensus seems to be the Zambezi chips were not ready for prime time, and a lot of people are still going with Phenom II X6s. If I built an AMD computer today, that's probably what I would do.

I see - sort of the same line as Ivy bridge not worth the trouble or gains vs previous architecture. When I was considering my system, Phemon II X6 was a serious contender, this was before Bulldozer-based processors were released. I do recall something about Phemon II in some cases out performing BD's. Since I built my system, have not been totally watching what's been going on. :)

Core i7s beat Phenom II X6s in every benchmark. IIRC the X6s are roughly comparable to i5s (though still a lot cheaper). As far as cost/power ratio, the X6s destroy i7s, but they don't go near as high on the power scale.

X6 is comparable to i5s when I was researching at the time. I did get i5 vs an I7 which the only difference is L3 and hyper threading. For gaming system not much point in buying an i7 from an price point and most games are not optimized to use all the cores anyway. :)
