So seeing that 98% of you are probably in the military......whats it like now with dont ask dont tell being appealed? Any guys gets surprised and find out that someone they never would have guessed was gay? Kinda curious as to what the atmosphere is like now that this is in action......

When I was in the military the don't ask don't tell policy was still in effect. Even if I where in the military now, it wouldn't bother me that the policy went away. If the person is gay, so what. Just don't come at me in an inappropriate manner and will be fine. I would rather have a gay person by my side who is willing to take a bullet to save my ass vs having a person who is scared to dismount a vehicle in case of a fire fight. I think all who care about their community and their country should be able to serve.

Whether you're gay or not, you still can't show behavior that is "prejudicial to good order and discipline". So if you're going around dressed up real weird, if you're constantly making statements about being gay and causing problems, or if you're committing sexual harrasement, none of that will fly still. The only thing it changed was if someone was inadvertantly found to be gay or just told one of their buddies and others found out, now they can't be kicked out. To most people on the outside = big change. In practice = not much.

Back in the 90's we had an MP and an infantry guy who were gay in my unit. I was one of a few who knew cause the MP drunk hit on me and the other I caught with his German boyfriend making out. I didn't care and they were good soldiers. I ended up with the MP on one of my security details. He almost took rounds for me and gay or not that's heroic. I think don't ask don't tell is a facade to protect the hillbilly old school soldiers. I know my brother said there's one in his unit in 82nd and the guy is cool, and most of the unit doesn't care. Unfortunately the standard of what a gay soldier/sailor/marine is to expect depends on squadmates and the cadre approach to it. Yeah there are set rules but we all know rules ans regs don't always dictate a barracks or foxholes etiquette.

When I was younger I thought the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy was in place to protect the gay/lesbian soldiers from being discriminated against while IN the military. When I found out the truth, I was like "Really? So you'd keep out a gay man that wants to defend his country and would lay down his life for his comrades rather than admit him?" What's the reasoning here? As long as he/she respects other people's beliefs(and most gays/lesbians do), what's the problem?Straight people aren't the only ones who bleed Red, White and Blue. It has been the Honor of my life to be apart of our Military, fighting alongside men who will be brothers to me til I die. That Honor should be an option to all Americans, isn't what we fight for called Freedom? Is it not the inherent right of all Americans to enjoy and exercise this Freedom? I'll fight alongside anybody who has the GUTS to pick up a Rifle and turn back the wolves at our doorstep.
