So im taking a trip to new york at the beginning of july and I was wanting to know what to do while Im there...its probably for just one day and im not into the tourist type crap. So from those who know it best what are some cool things that are cheap or free to do in NYC???

I think 1,000 yd stare is a police officer in the NYPD if I remember correctly. He would be a great source of info for sure.

Take a stroll thru Times Square, lots of sidewalk entertainment there. Go into Penn Station and people watch for a while (amazes me every time). Idk I always took the transit into NYC to see Broadway Shows, Bar Hop, and just stroll around. Pizza is awesome. A close second to NJ pizza so you might want to try some. The only street vendors I buy from are the Nutz4Nutz trucks lol.

CBGB in the Bowery....except I think it recently closed for good...Tompkins Park or Washington Square Park...good freaky people watching....Bullet is right about Penn Station...just avoid the restrooms...eek!

Ewwww god yea. Avoid the bathrooms and make sure you take TP and sanitizer with you lol. They are always nasty and always out of paper.

Well, I live here and I can tell you, cheap or free isn't easy to find. You can go to Coney Island, that's pretty cheap.
Is Penn Station where the Apple Store is? If so, I'd go there. :)
Nope. Apple stores are in SOHO, and upper west and easy sides

Sadly, he's right CBGB's is closed. Union Square is pretty cool, my favorite comic shop is right near there, Forbidden Planet!
Depending on the day, there may be a street fair festival, I love those. Great food, ok music, great food, attractions....did I say great food? You need to visit the Shake Shack too, best burgers in the city.

First off you have to check out the world trade center memorial. It was done well, took them long enough! South street sea port is pretty cool, then take a walk over the Brooklyn bridge. There is a lot of history there, and has nice views of the city. Go to the intrepid museum, they recently redid it and they made it pretty cool, I take my kids there all the time. They have the space shuttle there now. Here is a ton to do in NY it just depends on how freaky you want to get? Lol!! Let me know!!

Oh, just realized, are you going to be in NY for the 4th of July? If so I may be working the firework show and I can get you in a good spot. It's an awesome show!!

That depends on who you know!! Lol!! I took 2 boot Marines to the top with a buddy of mine while they were there for fleet week. We tinned them to the front of the line, plus they were in there deltas which also helped. They were getting hit on left, and right from random chicks. They were so young they didn't know how to handle it, it was pretty funny!!

There's an old elevated rail platform which was at one time going to be demolished, untill
a group of New Yorkers were able to have it preserved and converted into a walkway and park.
It's called The Highline and is very cool.

Circle Line used to be a good attraction. I was on it in '74 or 75. Might of been earlier. I don't know about now. LOL..
Yea even though their super touristy the open top bus tours are fun as hell. I'm a history nut so all the info about old new York intrigues me. You could take a trip to the "5 Points" the site of the war from the movie Gangs of New York.

I remember two things about NYC... Crazy people and Rays Pizza and Bagel Shop. Best pizza I've ever eaten in my life. Of course this was over a decade ago so it may suck now.

kinda disappointed because Ill be there on the second only...so no cool fireworks show for me. I appreciate it though....maybe next time I get the chance to go up there Ill have longer and we can arrange a lunch or something. So where is the best place to get pizza in Manhattan? That is where we will be most of the day.So local new yorkers...tell me the best things and food in Manhattan? BTW does anyone know where to get a Gyro...ive wanted one for years now. Used to by the home kits but cant find them anymore
The best gyro in Manhattan is across the street from the Hilton hotel on 53rd St. And 6th ave. Its a Halal Cart. Make sure you get white sauce! (Ha Ha, I know)
Pizza in NYC is a much debated topic. Lol, many have different tastes. Lots think Brooklyn pies are the best, many others swear by slices in the Bronx. What I can tell you is where pizza in NYC originated. Lombardi's Pizza on the corner of Mott and Spring Street. Its the very first Pizzeria ever opened in the U.S. I've sent lots of hotel guests there and they loved it. Another one lauded as "The Best" is definitely John's of Bleecker Street. Both are great.
