So, I got into DUST514 this evening and played a round. I know I'm no FPS expert, but here's my opinions, anyway.

First, a question I asked that never got answered: yes, DUST supports the PS Move. So if you have a Move and a sharp shooter (or other rifle prop), you're in business. I didn't set mine up for the Move, so I'll come back to that in another post.

For those of you complaining about emptying a magazine into someone who then turns around and kills you in 1... there's a good chance they've been playing long enough to boost skills. They *might* have dropped autumn on some named equipment. Most likely, though, they chose the scout option to start. I went scout/sniper myself. The scout suit is what EVE players know as a passive shield tank. The standard weapon for a scout is a sniper rifle. That's why they could one-shot you. In my first match my k/d was 4/1 and I was lucky enough to be on the winning team.

Which brings me to my next point: ISK. I made a little over 98k in that mission. I'm not sure exactly what the scout loadout costs to replace, but I'm sure that 98k covers at least 6 replacement sets.

Skill point earnings are based on your contribution to the op, plus any bonuses you might get from boosters. I got 24k SP w/ no bonuses. I'm not sure where that falls on the scale of shit to shazam. But it should be enough to bump a skill.

When you start, you'll have some left over skill points but not enough to bump any skills. To pick up new skills, you'll have to buy skill books just like EVE.

Your starting skillset will let you operate the pre-configured fit that goes with the role you chose as your start point. In my case that's scout suit, sniper rifle, and shield boosts. You won't be able to use the other standard loadouts yet.

Gameplay seems good. My internet connection has been crappy all week, but I didn't have any lag or connectivity issues while playing. I got killed by letting an assault trooper get in too close for the sniper rifle to be effective, and I don't think I have a backup sidearm yet.

Overall, I likey. I'm looking forward to trying it w/ the Move tomorrow.

I find the swarm launcher is pretty great except for the small amount of ammo it holds and havnt figured out if there's an ammo resupply during an op tho

One of the capturable positions is a supply depot. I don't know if it's functional.

If there isnt a way to call for an ammo drop now, there probably will be before it goes live.

I'm just using the standard stuff (assault loadout) till I get enough cash to get a couple hundred sets of something... Plus raising my skills up a bunch so my set will be good. Also note that for early sets, Merc is a good option because they dont need any prerequisites.

Got into the closed beta this weekend and really enjoyed it.

A lot like MAG in many respects. I think that old crew of MAG players will really enjoy this game.

I have to admit Battlefield has kinda spoiled me ... the comms were SILENT like a frakk'n tomb and that was something I didn't like ... however once we get some USMG presence in game ... that issue will go away.

My only other bit of trepidation about the game is the way the "free to play" is set up. This is going to be a VERY tricky balance thing for the developers. Because at first glance (and I'm only doing first glances here this is just a first impression) it seems like a person with deep pockets will be able to buy a serious advantage in the game where as a person who doesn't have as much free cash will be limited to lesser equipment.

I'm sure that there is a mechanic in there to try to keep the playing field a little more level. If anyone has good intel on that I would love to hear what they are saying.

All told though I like it ... the environments are cool the gear is slick ... and the RPG skill aspect is very cool.

That's all for now.

You earn pretty good ISK when you win missions. Especially if you're a significant contributor.

If you're good, you'll earn enough (and lose little enough) to keep yorself equipped.

Remember, too... one thing it'll have in common with EVE is that skill points will be the most valuable currency. And you can't buy those (boosts notwithstanding). The more you play, the more SP you earn, even if you're losing or a minimal contributor early on.

To say it needs, a shit ton of work...would be an understatement at this point. This title is nowhere near ready, to even be called a beta yet ...it's more like pre-pre-alpha at the moment.

Yeah, I'm not sure if that's how EVE works or not, but in the FPS world, we just want to kill shit! MAG was about in-depth as I liked with the skills tree, etc. DUST is just too much for me. Hopefully it will get better.

I'm sure the skill tree in Dust is going to remain complex. It's how the EVE universe works. But I'm also certain that once the tree and algorithms and numbees stabilize, they'll start releasing databases and web sites will show up to help you with skill planning and such, just like EVE.

The micro-payment BS bothers me, though. They tried that in EVE at one time and it didn't float. Hopefully they'll back off on it before release.

Those Micros, are going to really hinder game play if they don't ease up.

Is it true dust affects our systems in eve. That sounds cool

I'm not sure exactly how much game interaction there will be, but the games will at least share an economy and a server.

The DUST beta is currently running on the EVE public test server. Anyone with an EVE account can log on to that server to test fits, upcoming ship/module/feature changes, etc.

Well I read it on dust514 website that it will be a part of taking a system when the game rolls out.

Yeah, Eve has always been an intricate, database heavy game.

The micro-transactions, though, I don't understand people's surprise and upset. "Free to Play." Why would you expect anything else?

Yeah, I get that they have to monetize it somehow, but comm charges? That's a bit much.

Was messing around again last night for a bit.

Still having troubles with bullet damage... I'm hitting but I'm just not putting targets down.

I see that there are damage upgrades (took some as loot the actually) I'll try to figure out how to install them. I do have my assault rifle skill up to 3 and I thought that might make me a little more lethal but no luck yet.

Other than that I really like it a lot ... it's just going to take me a bit to figure my way around.

OH also ... since I'm not far in at all with this character ... should I be looking at a specific Corp to work for or anything? I just picked one that sounded kinda cool and ran with it. I'm not sold on any one yet.

I was looking through the skill tree the other night...

There's some skill in there related to dispersal. It has something to do with how well you group your shots when you're firing assault weapons. The 5% bonus damage you get from skilling up assault weapons won't don any good if the real problem is that 70% of your rounds are simply missing the target.

Also, remember that DUST uses signature radius and weapon signature similar to how EVE does. If you're firing a heavy weapon at somebody in scout armor, they're only taking about 10-25% of the damage even when you do hit them. Look for skills/mods that help to counter this phenomenon if you're toting big guns.

For now, don't worry about corp. I don't think they even have the mechanisms in the game for you to switch corps, anyway. In the (hopefully near) future, they put in player corp support, and we'll all be able to transfer to the FUB [USMG1] corp.
