All I have to say is LAG LAG and more LAG. Seriously! I have enough lag problems with remote controls. Last thing I need is to have a controller that will be ran online and the response time will be way slower than using it on a console. G.A.Y!

Gonna require a revolutionary new approach to internet service to make this even remotely possible.

In the future, this will happen. However, I think that is more than 10, probably more than 15-20 years away. Games are being downloaded more and more, slowly doing away with physical discs but I'm pretty sure the PS4/Xbox 720 (or whatever they're actually called) will have disc drives. The public is not ready to go all-digital in this medium. Games will go all-digital (and by that I mean "mostly" digital) in the not-do-distant future. The article on kotaku linked in that article quotes one person as saying "consoles would no longer have disc drives by the PlayStation 5". Well, that's possible considering the PS5 is probably 5-7 years off. But we'll still have the consoles themselves for awhile. Before we can stream rendered games we'll need:

1) A lot faster internet. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the effective latency will be twice as much. Rather than moving your character on the console, and sending the position over the network, you now have to move your character over the network, which then sends your position over the network. Nowdays, you can play most FPS games fine as long as your ping is under 100ms, and usually a 'good' experience comes with under 75ms. If I'm correct with the increased latency, you'll need ping under 50ms - which a lot of home connections don't have.

2) A lot more bandwidth. Xbox Live actually doesn't use a lot of bandwidth - it's just sending a small amount of data - in an FPS game, just your position, state, and all the bullets you fire. With this, you will be streaming essentially a movie. That's a lot more data. From numbers I've seen, and hour of XBL gaming consumes 10-50 MB, whereas an hour of 720p video can consume up to 2GB (though probably closer to 1GB in most cases). With the current trend towards limited internet packages, this will drastically impact gaming.

So will it happen? Eventually. But I'm not even going to bother estimating how many years away it is - it'll be awhile.
