The deployment is on standby, no one really knows whats going on with it. I am not even supposed to be slotted for it since it's our sister unit's deployment... I don't think I would regret getting out.

I just did one enlistment and got out. I wanted to have a family, and make more cash!! Both are hard to do on active duty. I give active duty guys credit. I don't think I could leave my kids for six months or more at a time. Everybody is different though, you have to decide what's best for you, and your family!!

As a Civilian who wanted nothing more than to live the military life...I have no idea what your going through. I do know how it feels to hit a wall in your life...many walls actually. It feels like my life has been one wall after another and I am sitting at the bottom of the next wall right now. My advice...Think long and hard about all of the possibilities. How long have you been in...if you have served 10 suck it up for the next 10. If not...what would you do as a civilian. I know whatever you choose to do you will be successful. Just make sure its whats right for you and your family. Stand by your decision too, cause living with regrets will eat at you for a very long time.

I hit that wall right after i came back from my deployment, i was thinking about getting out after my first contract and going to school and getting a job as a civie. But last year m changed my mind when i met my wife and found out she was pregnant. So we talked about it and i decided to re up for another 4 years. Now im in Korea and i love my work but it is tough on the family but my wife supports what i do and she doesnt want me to get out. Shes pushing me to do 20 and i love her for that lol. Like A1000Yard said, its all about whats best for ur family. Mine is to stay in and support my family with what i know to do.

Why do you think i'm out the military now. 4 years in and now i'm out. Civilian life is GREAT! I do, however; miss being in the military though. The respect you get from others who are not in the military, regardless of your rank. Plus I miss wearing the uniform. Something about the uniform makes me wish I could wear it again on a daily basis. Minus the Velcro though lol

Keep this in mind also. You will definitely have to continue working after you do your 20 years, so at some point in your life you will need to seek employment. One of the hardest working guys I know did 20 years in the Marine Corps, retired a Gunny, E-7. His pension from his service is like $2200 a month. He had to join the NYPD at 38 years old, luckily they extend the age cut off for veterans. You can buy back your military time, up to 3 years, so you can retire after 17 years with the PD. His PD pension will be around $6000 a month, much better right?? My point is, look into all your options before your current enlistment is over so you can make the best decision possible. There are a lot of opportunities out there, and you seem like a smart guy to me, so I'm sure you would take advantage of it.

yeah I did 4 active 6 reserve, 3 years in active the green weenie just got sick of getting my balls busted over little shit. Go out went to school but being in the reserves helped the transition.

I had wanted to make Counter Intel for a while when I finally got a chance to be boarded and got my recommendation after extending my first enlistment for a year. However, between some of my "mentees" (part of the mentorship program which was implemented later on in my short career) getting in trouble every fucking weekend (meaning I get my ass chewed for not literally babysitting them while they're on liberty), and an issue of my own which had happened years earlier which every senior SNCO thought they were entitled to chew my ass about ad nauseam while my CI/lat move paperwork made its way up the chain (including fuckers who weren't in my direct CoC!)... I blew the fuck up. I was getting called into E-7, E-8, and E-9 offices day in and day out so that they could yell at me about something that had happened years before and had already been resolved, acting like there was some way they could block my lat move (and anyone with half a brain knows they can't block lat moves into those types of fields once you've been recommended unless there's something seriously wrong, so basically they were just chewing my ass because they like to go through the motions and feel all billy bad-ass).

Also, as I moved up in ranks, it became painfully apparent that it gets more political as you move up the tree. CI isn't like that, and that's one of the reasons I had been gunning for it. However, during the process, I became much more family oriented and decided what was best for my (at that time future family) family was to get out and do stuff in the civilian world. So, when the papers were FINALLY run all the way up the chain (had to go to CG because of my incident from a few years before), and the career jammer called for me to come sign them, I walked up to her office and instead of signing, just tore the shit up and told her I was "getting the fuck out of this bullshit". Then I got my ass chewed for that too. Go fucking figure.

I love the Corps, but it's so full of bags of dicks and shitbirds.... And as you get up in rank, you realize a lot of the people (especially since the wars made deployments a revolving door) who could do well in the civilian world (i.e. useful) got the fuck out, and the ones who knew they couldn't do shit or were happy they had excellent job security while scraping by on the bare minimums in the Corps, stayed in. And at least at that time, you could still get promoted (albeit slowly) while being a shit bird. So, there were plenty of shit birds with rockers who ran shit while being absolute pieces of shit. I was a bit motarded though (I was a permanent candidate on MoQ and Meritorious boards), so maybe most Marines weren't bothered by the abundance of slackers in the SNCO ranks, but for some reason it ate me to the core.

Anyway, I miss some things about the Corps (and I think the bonus for that lat move was $40-50k range), but I'm glad I got the fuck out and started living my own life. Before you get out, you need to look into what sort of opportunities you'll have available from direct translation of your MOS skills/training, and what you plan on doing. Luckily, my MOS was a direct translation for the FAA, but due to the ridiculous gub'mint processing time, I found a better job while they took forever to get things finished.

Cliffs: Do what you want and nothing else, just make sure you do your due diligence in prepping to get out and planning to establish the best civilian path for yourself.

Jared, this is a tough call no matter how you slice it. As a reservist, I can tell you that the job market is absolute shit right now. It's also damn near impossible to get back into AD once you are out. I've been trying for the past 2 1/2 years to get back into AD. Just think long and hard and remember that the grass is always greener on the other side. No matter what you choose, I wish ya the best of luck.

Ah...the case of the "fuck its." YUP! Had them often. Usually when shit was no longer "fresh." I too started with AD and for years I was miserable. I got out, but had a job lined up already. I stayed in the reserves and was recalled twice for a total of 2 years and 6 months. I ended up staying as a tampon until about 6 months ago, then I dropped into the IRR. If you get out, have a job set up, I suggest you stay reserve, IT GOES SOOOOO FAST! I did 17 years.....and my last 3 will be IRR....that means another pension when you turn grey and your pecker stops working. The military is rife with BS...all services....yes even your Air Force! :D Anyway, the economy sucks...everyone hate Union Workers like myself (cuz..you know...we single handedley caused the total collapse of the economy, not the guys running the pensions, but the guys getting them...cut my pension, but give the guy who fucked it up gets a bonus...yeah fuck you...but I digress...) jobs are tough to find....and there are thousands of vets out there looking for work. Whatever you do in the AF, start laying ground work now for lining up a job on the outside...also remember the VA is a good path....either to work for or get a claim in....and yes...you deserve it! Its there, if we dont use it, the federalies take it away and fuck everyone.

You have to realize that the bullshit is not just in the military, it's in any job you take!! No matter what you do you will always run into incompetent idiots, trust me!! Lol!! THERE EVERYWHERE !!! I agree, civ side don't give a shit. It's all about who kisses whos ass. Where I am at, they have only given raises once in the past 5 years. We do get bonus's, but its company performance based. The killer is the jackoffs or upper managment don't get treated same.
This year we took a big hit. Word got out that CEO and friends did not take a hit on their perfomance based incentive. Of course the CEO finally decided to give some money back (after all the complaining). We outsource just about everything and lot of those people get better pay and benefits. It goes on and on..

Like Toby said - maybe just a change. You could try to get on at an Air Guard Base in a Technician slot. During the week your a CIV wearing a uniform, of course you still have to do drill weekends. ... Air Guard is highly saturated in politics, but what isn't now days
