Not even remotely possible. If you're the most amazing Marine in the universe you still have to have 10 years of time in service and 3 years of time in grade to even meet the promotion board for selection to Master Gunnery Sergeant.

And he went from what? SSgt to CMSgt (or was it from TSgt?). Didn't you love how Lennox went from Captain to Major in that period but that commander of the air base in the first one goes from Colonel to 4-star in the same period?

only time people got rank increases like that was during WWII when the corp went from 2 divisions to 6 or 8. That also happened in all the armed force in WWII, if you remember in the show band of brothers the first sgt of easy company went from PVT at training to first Sgt then to LT.

He was a sergeant for the first three episodes.

Doesn't the Corps still do battlefield promotions? Would it be possible that way?

Not really most Master Guns are staff level leadership right? They really shouldn't be beating feet on the ground. I wouldn't think so anyways.

Yeah, but we're talking promotion to Top from Gunny or Staff.

Now that I've said that out loud, forget I brought it up. From what I remember about Corps promotions and rank distributions, somebody would have to be promoted from Lance or SGT to Top, or get two battlefield promotions within that 5 year period. Neither of which is realistic. I think it'd be more likely for someone to get "demoted" to 2LT.

Every branch is authorized battlefield promotion and the stipulations are different for each branch. In the Army and it's related people's, the battlefield promotions are straight forward. E4 and below can be made a SGT and SGT and above can be made one rank higher.NO TIME IN SERVICE/GRADE requirements. You must be serving in the position that you are being promoted to when you went berserk on the enemy and a school participation requirement is incurred if being in that rank requires one. You can only get one, so don't be too brave too often! AR 600-8-19 pg 153 covers the subject in three paragraphs...can't quote any other services rules, but DOD policy mandates the program, so all branches adhere to the availability of the promotions. Also, I know the USCG allows battlefield promotions from enlisted to officer, because I read a story about an NCO being made a LT or whatever they call it for bravery...

Now come on, baby airborne! You know all GREAT units have GREAT SENIOR NCO's that ALWAYS LEAD FROM THE FRONT! Well, at least in our Beloved Deuce! Really though, all of the sr NCOs, ESPECIALLY 1SGT (e8), are boot level leaders, as well as 80% of Command Sergeant Majors (battalion level and below)...I can only speak for the 82nd of course.

Not exactly the same, but in the Army, 7 in 7 is not a remarkable feat in combat arms MOS's...WITHOUT any battlefield promotions!

Ehh Air Force leans too heavily on their NCO corps. Our E-7s are pretty much lazy. Our First Shirts especially... my experience though. SNCOs have never really left a good example for us.

if this is meaning going from PFC to Master gunnery sgt no way that can happen out of WWII when they took some E-4 and made them First SGT with all the boots that were coming in to create whole divisions.

here you go master guns is the same as a Sgt maj E-9, they are usually experts in a tech field. Where sgt maj is top enlisted in a unit, for the navy the same as COB.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps_enlisted_rank_insignia this link shows it better.

I agree. We have some good SNCO's but we should. My unit is ridiculously top heavy. We have 2 E-9's, 6 E-8's and about 14 E-7's haha. Most of them are shit bags.

MasterGuns are a rare group. In the grunts they serve a operations chiefs for Weapons companies and LARs...They are masters of their MOS and serve as advisors to the CO. SgtMajs usually stay clear or MasterGuns....they basically give advice to God. Even a BF promo wont get you that. Those are reserved for the next grade up, usually E5 an below...also...the Marines do not use promotions as rewards. IiRC irs called a meritorious combat promotion. And we just fill billets as needed, regardless of rank....I was a company Gunny in iraq as a Sgt, then eventually a platoon commander as a ssgt. Both of which help you get promoted because its looks awesome on a fitness report to fill a billet that is well above your BiC and Line #.

5 years no fuckin way.....unless the guy landed on Tarawa in 1943 and his entire company was wiped out....but to Master Guns...no way. MasterSgt was common to get back in those days...by virtue of staying well after you accumulated the points to rotate home....and was for the more technical jobs....very common amongst engineer regiments.

Find the guy...if hes not a WW2 salt...then kick him in the dick...

Ahh, I didn't realize the basic E8 in the corps is also a Gunny. I thought E8 was a Master xxz like in the Army.
