Can someone give me some direction on specialties? I have made it through all 5 of the tutorial missions, and have done a few of the level 1 agent missions they give you. My question is more on the different types of long term characters you create.
From what I can see so far, there are two main ones: Mining and Combat. Yet there is about 15 different "basic jobs" I see like industrialist, trader, etc. Can someone point me to where there is an easy understanding of how you play the game from a specialty character point of view? For instance, if I want to be "entreprenuer", what does that mean? Sorry, just a couple days into all this and my head is spinning.

Sure, there are many many roads to go down and understanding it all can be daunting.
You can be an R&D guy, make and sell blueprints or advanced items and ships. This usually needs to have some mining /refining or day trading ability.
Day trader, much like the real stock market. All the goods sold are "stocks" and you use buy/sell orders to fill your pockets with isk...you'll never need to leave a station. Most day traders live at te main market hubs.
Drug Dealer, harvest moon gas and make boosters...a very very lucrative business...and much like RL, everyone will want to kill you.
Electronic Warfare, the most hated and loved combat career! Youll never not have a fleet invite...but you will be the first thing everyone shoots at. You keep other players from shooting at you and your friends.
Smuggler, you haul small amounts of illegal goods into area that there is a demand. There are some items in game that are illegal to possess in certain space, with a fast ship, you can get them in for a good profit!
Hauler, youre a space lane trucker...pick shit up at point a...drop it off at point b
Scammer, yes these are legal and work! Concoct a scam and profit...false advertise, trick, and fuck over anyone you wish!
Those are all off the top of my head while I am taking a dump....Ill add more later.

Yeah, eve is one of those games that has multiple, viable ways to play it. PvP and PvE for combat, with 4-5 different paths alone.
Industrial wise, you can be a miner, an inventor/builder, a trader, or a contract hauler.
All different play styles, all equally valid.

Typically you need to focus on one thing at first and then add from there. Especially for R&D. Most players make rigs at first because the components are easier to get and the rewards are immense. You find out which rig you want to make, and set yourself up for the Tech 2 variant. You rarely ever see them on the markets because they sell so fast and for massive amounts of isk. The R&D player must focus on science skills....but at a minimum be able to fly Cover ops ships so you can move your product around relatively safe. There are many different science skills, but they need to be trained up to 4 at a minimum because those skills are necessary for invention success. Also, if you have access to a station with space...you can make Blue Print copies of T1 things(primary need in invention) and you can make bank!

Right now I have been training hard on the Industry skills, Electronic Skills, and Engineering Skills. My original thought was to try and work up to the point I could get a "Curse" ship, which from what I can tell requires a tons of skill in Electronics. The reason I was training in Industry is to try and get a Hulk so I could passively mine in the .9 space and just let it run while I was doing other things during the day. The R&D sounds like another type of income generation where I don't have to be online shooting down blood raiders.

With the mining change, you want a Retriever then, followed by a Mackinaw. Hulks would be a waste for you.

O.K. I will go for the retriever. Is that also the ship I should work toward being able to build?
Thanks for all the help you guys are providing. This game is obviously massive and seems to have more twists and turns than any other game I have ever played. I can only imagine the server room these guys have installed.

So with my Character, I am an industrialist/Stealth Bomber/Blockade Runner/(Soon to be) Drug dealer. I can fly up to a Battle cruiser, and I can build up to a Battleship. My end goal is to be able to build Titans, and fly a Rorqual (at least skill wise) I can also fly freighters. So, industry is my main field. Get a retriever, ravage the belts, build up a huge stockpile of ore, and DO THE BEGINNER missions. If you don't want the ships, reprocess them for the ore. I am Tim Whicked in the game if you need any help let me know.
