WWE star David Otunga isn't taking any chances now that Hostess has announced it's closing up shop -- stocking up on EVERY POSSIBLE HOSTESS SNACK EVER on Friday -- and TMZ has the heart-stopping picture to prove it.

Otunga -- who's ironically engaged to Weight Watchers spokeswoman Jennifer Hudson -- tells TMZ he was devastated by the news Friday that Hostess is going out of business ... so he scrambled to a Hostess outlet in Chicago to salvage whatever snacks he could.

But he was too late -- the entire outlet was empty -- so Otunga ran to his local supermarket instead, where he managed to squirrel away a shopping cart filled with roughly 80,000 calories.

Otunga tells us, "I don't want my son to go without Twinkies."

The horror.

They were talking about it on the radio this morning, and one guy brought up a good point about Hostess quite possibly using this to put the twist on the unions. That since they're auctioning off the brand name and recipes, it's almost a guarantee they'll be back.

I personally dont eat the stuff, or sweets for that matter. But im still concerned of the overall fact that a company like Hostess is going out of business. I think that says something about the economy and the direction we are headed. Rumor has it that the company is gonna be bought out by a spanish company. Before you know it twinkies are gonna be filled with salsa and look more like churros!

Hahaha! I'm the same way when it comes to eating sweets. I ate so much when I was younger that I no longer have the desire to eat anymore. I do, however; have the urge from time to time to have sweets that consist of peanut butter and chocolate. It just saddens me that Hostess is going out of business. I mean, its not like America is getting any healthier. American's tip the chart at over 60% when it comes to obesity, and this is our population I'm talking about. When it comes down to it, that's A LOT. I do my best and work my ass off to be apart of the 40% who is not apart of the population that is obese. My problem is that I have issues when it comes to being lazy. Now that I work two jobs and play video games, my desire to go out and do outdoor recreational activities has now hit an all time low lol

Along with the union comment, i saw on the news yesterday that Walmart is having problems with employee treatment and benefits because of the medical coverage cost going up for businesses. They were talking about how Walmart has been notorious for poor employee treatment and when groups of employees try to fight for rights, since they arent unionized, they just shut down the store. They have in the past to stop the uprisings. I dont think Walmart is in trouble in anyway financially, but i cant help but feel for those being mistreated and trying to survive in the economy we're all in.

I hope this isnt a chain reaction event thatll continue to close down stores and cause even more problems. I know that small businesses are in huge trouble with the benefit coverage increase as well. Whats next?

Not saying that sometimes unions aren't useful, just too often they're just in it for the interests of the union, not of its members. In their greed, they often become the very thing they (claim to) fight against.

I actually think unions have become what they were created to guard against. My brother brings home half of what his hourly wage is after the union takes their cut for the various funds, etc.

Hostess getting closer to a buyer for Twinkies

Hostess Brands is close to picking a preferred buyer for its iconic Twinkies brand, a move that would be a key step in the eventual return of the snack cake to grocery shelves.
A source familiar with negotiations says that two private-equity firms, Apollo Global Management (APO) and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co., are the likely winners of this round of negotiations to buy Twinkies.

"It's likely," said the source. "It's moving very fast."
A spokesman for Apollo said he had no comment on the report. Metropoulos could not be reached for comment. The firm's food holdings include Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, and in the past have included Chef Boyardee canned pasta, Bumble Bee seafood, PAM cooking spray and Gulden's Mustard, all of which it eventually sold to ConAgra Foods Inc (CAG, Fortune 500).

Any agreement to sell would be subject to approval of the federal bankruptcy court that is overseeing the liquidation of Hostess' assets. Other bidders could emerge to try to top the offer made by whatever bidder is identified by Hostess.

Hostess has already named lead bidders for some of its other brands. On Monday, McKee Foods Corp., agreed to pay $27.5 million for the Drake's brand and some of its equipment. Drake's products include Ring Dings, Yodels, Devil Dogs and Yankee Doodles, as well as its coffee cake. McKee, a privately held family-run company, is best known for its Little Debbie brand of snacks.

Earlier this month, Flowers Foods (FLO) announced an agreement to buy six of Hostess' bread brands -- including Wonder, Nature's Pride and Beefsteak -- for a total of $390 million in two separate transactions. Flowers Foods' top brands include Nature's Own and Tastykake.

Hostess announced in November that it was shutting down following a bakers' union strike. The closing of the company put about 15,000 of Hostess' 18,500 workers out of work immediately. Others stayed on to help wind down the company's operations.

The demise of Hostess led fans of many of the company's products to quickly scoop them up at grocery stores, as consumers feared that they would never be able to purchase them again.

However, it was always widely expected that Hostess would be able to sell its most popular brands to other food makers through the liquidation process.
