We're getting a nursery ready. Just curious anything you guys bought that was "essential" but you don't even use it? Any advice?

Well a battery powered swing is great, baby wipe warmer (if its a boy, they pee when that cold wipe hit the ass, so cover up the tallywacker or duck) and you can never go wrong with something that plays soft music to put the kid down. Now 8 months later get 1 of those back pack thing to carry the kid around it safer and you get some exercise.

I found the cold wipe warmer was more of a cost burden because it tends to dry out and brown/ burn the wipes at the bottom. Which wastes wipes and costs more money. I found the high chair to be a waste of money when those portable high chairs are just as good if not better. Three items I used the most were the portable high chair, portable (tabletop) swing, and bouncy seat. Other essentials were the pack n play (but the bells and whistles are fluff and hardly used) and the huge stroller system was practically worn out that first year so don't scimp on the carseat/stroller system. Get a good sturdy but lightweight one (hahaha there's a challenge for ya)

Folding tub leaked. Kitchen sink didn't and it had a spray hose (win)! I'll post more as I think of it. What a lot of it came down to is old fashioned basics couldn't be beat. Less was more in most cases. I could drag and get more use out of that portable stuff than the full size stuff. Nice when visiting family and a comfort to a baby in unfamiliar surroundings.

First off, congratulations!! This is great news!

MadBiologist and I can +1 everything Bull3t said. We have three kids, two of which are twins. The wipe warmer does require a little bit of attention if you intend to use it. You'll have to add water once in a while to protect wipes. She's spot on about the high chair and the portable ones. Aside from that, we've found bottle warmers to be a waste as well. But that's just our personal experience. Definitely invest in a baby monitor. It gives you great peace of mind.

We'd easily recommend a rocker seat like this one: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13069697. They take batteries and have a switch that gently vibrates the seat. That used to knock the kids right out at nap time.

One big of personal advice...if someone offers to keep the baby so you and the misses can get some sleep or go out, by all means TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT!! It's harder to find someone to offer to take care of your kids when you want to go out when the kids are getting older. I'm speaking from experience here.

Best thing ever was a jumper. My kid still uses it. Can't use it until they can hold themselves upright but definitely worth it's weight in gold.

Congrats man! Mine is 7 weeks old and so far the most essential piece of baby kit we have is our baby swing. It's a battery/plug in hybrid that puts my son OUT. It also rocks back and forth and side to side. He loves it. Lol he absolutely hates the Basinet. Total waste of money. Also the Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier is helpful so far.

+1 this. My kid was out cold in it as soon as she touched it. A bouncy chair when they're older. We had good luck with the tub we got, especially when she was too small for it. Baby jail play-pen, make sure you get one with the halfway attachment foe when the kid is younger.

Definitely a good stroller/car seat combo if you plan on using it a lot.

We just found out my wife is pregnant with our third kiddo in three years and the advice I'm seeing is pretty spot on. A good stroller/travel system is always a good choice. Portable stuff is always good, we got a used portable swing for $30 and it still works great after 2 kids. We also got one of those Ergo Baby carriers and that thing had been awesome, almost like you aren't even carrying them around.

A lot of people think we're crazy but we also do cloth diapers. They're actually kinda cool and not that gross. They were $425 and we only use disposables when traveling so we've saved a crazy amount of money (they paid for themselves in about 7-8 months). They've been through 2 kids and still not all nasty and disgusting. There's a bunch of different kinds these days, so let me know if you want more info. I completely understand if you aren't interested, I know it isn't for everyone. I thought my wife was crazy when she suggested it, but after a couple weeks I was totally ok with it.

Also for your sanity, teaching your kid good sleeping habits is invaluable. The Baby Whisperer Solves all your Problems by Tracy Hogg is a good one. She's kinda extreme on some stuff but as with any sleep training book you'll have to tailer whatever method to your personality to a degree.

Hope it helps. I've read way more books than I care to admit, but I think the more research you do the better. Be careful though, you can overload and get lost in peoples theories. Everyone will try to tell you what they did was best and my advice is to try it if you want and if it doesn't work toss it. Every kid is different and what works for one won't necessarily work for all.
