View Full Version : [360] Next Gen XBOX Rumors!

So many of us have already heard about the 720 or whatever it shall be called here's just an article I was checking out earlier...
Enjoy that time as the only next-generation console on the market, Wii U. The competition is coming sooner than you might think. Bloomberg reports (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-11-29/microsoft-said-to-plan-next-xbox-console-for-2013-holiday-season.html) Microsoft will release its next generation Xbox in time for the 2013 holidays. While the date has been widely expected, the news service says unnamed company insiders have now confirmed the time period.
There are still plenty of questions about the reveal, though. One of the biggest is whether Microsoft will wait until the E3 trade show in June to debut the Xbox 720 (or Xbox 8, or Durango, or whatever they decide to call it), though the company is said to be considering a separate event dedicated solely to the system's reveal.
Rumors about the tech specs of the next system are everywhere. Most recently, Xbox World reported that it will boast an improved version of Kinect, a Blu-ray drive, and a new controller with an embedded HD touchscreen.
Microsoft, not surprisingly, declined to comment on the story.
Part of the reason for that 'no comment' is the company's long-standing refusal to discuss rumor and speculation. The other is that it doesn't want to distract anyone from the Xbox 360 this year.
It's a strategy that's working so far. During Black Friday week, Microsoft beat out the competition by selling 750,000 Xbox 360 consoles (http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/xbox-360-black-friday-sales-nearly-double-wii-193700785.html). Halo 4, which many speculate is the swan song for the Xbox 360 as far as original AAA titles go, is also selling well.
Bloomberg's story did not, however, make mention of the streamlined "Xbox TV" device that has been making the rumor rounds lately. The Verge reported late last week (http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/21/3674802/xbox-tv-set-top-box-casual-gaming-streaming-2013) that Microsoft was planning a set-top box device that would provide access to core entertainment services as well as casual gaming options at a lower price than its next gen console. That device, reportedly, is meant to compete with Apple TV.

It would be stupid not to. Usually when next gen consoles come out the put games out for old and new for a little while because they know not too many already have the system.

That's what I figured. The only way they wouldn't do that is for a major title they wanted to use as a release exclusive to get people to switch, and BF4 isn't big enough for that. But I guess I'll have to get a new console by the time Halo 5 comes out.

My #1 concern with either the new Xbox or PlayStation. The economy is still tough and doesn't look like it's gonna improve anytime soon.

IIRC, the 360 and PS3 started around $600 and fell off a cliff once supply caught up with demand. I'd expect a similar scenario, only I guess they'll shoot for a slightly lower initial price point. My guess would be $450-500 for a large HDD model.

360 launched at $300 and $400, I believe. With the added Bleu-Ray, I'm guessing $400-$500.

Okay, the 360 did indeed premier at $300 for the core system/$400 for the nicer one (I guess with a HDD). The PS3, however, released at higher prices, and that must have been where I saw the $600 ($499 for the 20GB, $599 for the 60GB).

Yeah, keep in mind though that at the time the ps3 was competively priced with stand alone blue ray players which now can be got for $50. I see this coming in around $250 to $300 for a base model and $400 for the fancy one. Unless they include something like the kinect built in or make it ridiculously fast the price shouldn't be too outrageous. By the way has any one noticed that they have started selling Xbox like they do cell phones? Buy a 250 gig hard drive one for $99 and then get locked into a two year contract to Xbox live at $14.99 a month.

Yeah you're right about that. I think it'll probably be $300 for the base model, which will probably have a small hard drive. Anyone wonder about SSDs in consoles? I think they would be a good fit because most people don't burn through a lot of read/write cycles on their consoles-they could just install the game and get a nice speed boost.
And yeah, they started doing the contract plan beginning of the year I think. But you don't really save any money that way, it just spreads the cost out over time.

didnt it have to be a WD scorpion (120), 250 or 320 GB blue or blacks, I bought the star wars edition this year, before that still had my original hard drive.
The main thing is it a slim or old school. got this from a modder friend.
WD Scorpio is the way to go. Any of these models will work:
- WD Scorpio Series BEVS/BEAS
- WD Scorpio Blue Series BEVS/BEVT/BPVT
- WD Scorpio Black Series BEKT/BJKT
- WD VelociRaptor Series
- WD AV-25 Series BUDT

Possible WiiU like controller
Activation codes needed on every game (no more used games)
Must always be connected to the internet
Price: basic $300-$400, w/ bells and whistles $400-$500

Also don't understand the activation code from console stuff.......as it makes no sense to attempt to control from the console, instead of the existing developer codes. If its true, there is going to be some serious kickback money in the works.

I think if they were going to do this it would hope it would be more along the lines of what was done for Battlefield. Buy a used copy but purchase a new code from the publisher. Sure it's $15 extra bucks, but it's most likely still cheaper than buying a band new copy.
But like I said on the PS3 thread:
That's why I both take these rumors with a grain of salt and don't let activation codes or perma-online things get to me. Mostly because my system is always online and I keep my games for well over 1-2 years before even thinking of trading them in. Plus if I said no to those I wouldn't have a system at all. Besides right now those are rumors and I don't see them doing either. Especially since there will still be games released for the 360 and PS4 after the next gen release that could easily be played on the new systems. Plus they'd be shooting them selves in the foot if newer games like Skyrim, BO2 or Dead Space 3 weren't BC. A lot of lost sales and unhappy people. I know others might not think so but I think they know better than that. At least I hope they do.

A bit of an update on the Xbox rumor mill.
Looks like the next Xbox will include a Siri-like speech recognition technology. This may allow a "wake on" voice system. Turning the 720 on just by saying "Xbox on".
The new system should also include natural language controls and a speech-to-text feature. I'm hoping this feature will allow you to send a player a message without switching to the menu or having to stop playing the game to send it.
The system should also voice reply back to you with results (the example given was while using Bing search query). Basically the system will talk back to you.
Finally it looks like Skype will be added as well.
Again as with all rumors take what you read and hear with a helping of salt till the official word is given.
Sources are Mechanima and TheVerge (http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/7/3958546/new-xbox-speech-recognition-like-siri).

Not really game-useful, but pretty solid for MS's attempts to be the 'hone entertainment" hub. All it needs is a reciever setup to run surround sound, and it could replace every box on my entertainment center.

Also on tap, MS is working on 4 brand new IP's to come out on the next-gen Xbox.
The Xbox 720 (http://www.examiner.com/topic/xbox-720) will apparently be receiving four brand-new games, and these Xbox 720 titles could be part of Microsoft's plan to compete with the PlayStation 4 in the way of a superior selection of games.
According to a report fromGamingEverything (http://gamingeverything.com/38981/microsoft-has-four-unannounced-ips-in-the-works/) on Friday, Jonathan Browne, who is a senior product manager within Microsoft’s first-party development group, confirmed, via a LinkedIn profile, his position within Microsoft and also said he has been working on the development side of four upcoming new Intellectual Properties (IPs).
"I am currently a strategic Senior Product Manager/Product Planner within the Microsoft 1st Party Publishing group.
"I have been the primary product manager on four unannounced new IP and have been a key contributor to bringing these IP from the very early concept phase through green light to production," Browne said.

More rumors for you all. Gathered from VG24/7.
Backwards Compatibility:
A quote from Blake Jorgenson (EA's Chief Financial Officer) at a panel at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference.
I think people are going to be pretty excited. An Important thing to remember is that next-gen consoles (XBOX 720 and PS4) will most likely not be backwards compatible.
And if you [ play ] multiplayer on a game, you'll most likely not be able to play with someone on a different generation.
I'm not sure how to take this. It is coming from a publisher yes, but from the CFO of EA. Not from Sony or Microsoft themselves. Again I think both systems would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did this. And again grab your grain of salt.
But here are some interesting thoughts on why the 720 won't block pre-owned games. Taken from Outside Xbox with me paraphrasing where I can after the reasons if the responses are way too long.
1. Retailers won't go for it. From Mom and Pop shops to big name stores it would be a great loss of profit if they could not sell pre-owned games and would hamper the sale of new systems if they decided to do so.
We know the desire to purchase a next-generation console would be significantly diminished if new consoles were to prohibit pre-owned games, limit portability or not play new physical games.
2. DLC. Even if the player is the original owner or not they are still a potential purchaser of DLC. Making a pre-owned game more valuable spinning in the disc drive then sitting on a shelf even if the publisher doesn't make money directly from the sale of pre-owned games. With the addition of online passes a publisher can still make a profit by restricting the use of online multi-player games from console to console (As BF3 did I believe).
3. Always Online. Requires an always online console but Microsoft can't afford to assume that everyone all over the world has an internet connection.
Think of Blizzard's always online system for Diablo 3 recently and what a disaster that was.
4. The Cometition. *cough* PS4 *cough* With the next-gen systems almost here Microsoft can't afford to give the competitive edge to their key rival.
We [ also ] understand that PS4 won't have such restrictions. It looks like an easy PR win for Sony... unless the strength of the reaction online forces Microsoft to reconsider.
5. Consumer Power. We are highly influential. Look at Mass Effect 3 and gamers reaction to the ending.
6. Microsoft doesn't care as much as third-party publishers do.
As long as Microsoft protects its own studio games from being sold on with free episodic downloads, like Spartan Ops, it doesn't care how people are playing XBOX games as long as they are and that they are talking about them. If you can only ever buy games at full price plenty of people won't shell out for the new console. Which means Microsoft can't flog things like XBL, XBLA, music and movies to them or advertise of them. And increasingly it is on these thing's that XBOX makes it's money.
Interesting look at the subject. Any thoughts?

We'll see what they do with backwards compatibility, but I think the always-on thing is going to be terrible if it happens.
jxspyder
02-14-2013, 11:50
Honestly, #6 is all the reason they need to make the whole issue pure unwarrented speculation. They have absolutely nothing to gain by this, as a console developer. And any game developed under them has the issue solved by code unlocks.
The backwards compatibility issue isn't much of an issue, for me at least, because the games don't benefit at all until they're redone, and I don't get rid of my previous consoles until there are a decent catalog of games for it. And multiplayer issues are a developer issue, not a console issue for the most part.
The only thing I have a problem with that is remotely possible is the "always connected" bit. I have slow-ass internet with hard restrictions at the new place, so that is extremely problematic.

Backwards compatibility is important to me. Not necessarily because I won't buy new games but because I have so much time invested in my 360 I would hate to see it wasted by not being able to move forward with the games without switching consoles. Another important reason why I think PS2 was so successful.

With the PS4 revealing their shiny new controller it looks like the Xbox is stepping up to the plate. Here's some quote from a Machinima vid on Youtube.
Eventcore, a company that organizes media events, has registered the domain name XboxEvent.com. And Eventcore only registers domain names for upcoming events.
The event is rumored to take place in April. A month after the GDC which is where we expected the see the event take place.
Microsoft has yet to comment on this or say anything official.
Major Nelson (Larry Herb) is quoted with a cryptic quote "Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach."
So far that's all I have found. More will appear soon though I hope.

hot topic today is the next XBOX having an always on internet connection requirement
Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/the-next-xbox-will-require-an-internet-connection-to-st-470062456)
the article says an internet connection is, according to their sources, required to launch any software on the system but after launched will be able tolerate dropped connections. Later it mentions the software suspending and opening a network connection troubleshooter after a set amount of time without a connection so that doesn't sound like "tolerating" to me but i might be missing something.
Microsoft creative director Adam Orth then posted on twitter "Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an "always on" console. Every device is "always on". That's the world we live in #dealwithit" after getting a lot of flak for the post he has now locked his twitter account so i can't link it directly but here's a picture of it in this article (http://kotaku.com/microsoft-creative-director-doesnt-get-the-drama-aro-470793216)

We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers.

With Nintendo and Sony current gen systems already utilizing 3d I'd say it's almost inevitable that Microsoft is going to incorporate it too. I'm more curious on when someone is going to come up with a clever enough way to utilize the tech to where it doesn't feel more like a gimmick than a solid aspect of the game. Maybe after they find a way to prevent nausea and/or headaches in many people?

WTF $500! You know your gonna want that one too if you get a Xbox. If its always on.... then I'll pass. PS4 FTW!
The Xbox 720 will be revealed on May 21 ahead of a November release and probably won't offer backwards compatibility, according to veteran technology blogger Paul Thurrott.
On the latest What the Tech podcast, Thurrott claimed that Microsoft's next console will be available from November for either $500 for a normal model, or $300 for a subscription model. He also weighed in on the mounting evidence that suggests the next Xbox will be always online.
"The thing that interests me, going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says ‘must be internet-connected to use’ in the notes," he explained, before adding, "And that’s all I have, but it does say that."

Random idea. I hypothesize that the next xbox will indeed be always on. But that, at the same time.....won't.
We all know MS wants to move beyond just gaming. Entertainment hub, providing you with games, tv, movies, social experience......the whole package.
So what I'm picturing here, is a tiered system.
Xbox casual: The cheap version. Possibly subscription, will require an always-on connection.
Reactions:
Hardcore - "Boo, Hiss, Rawr!!!"
Casual - "Hmm..cheap."
Xbox Elite: The premium version. Online optional, deluxe version. No sub.
Reactions:
Hardcore - "I got stuff you don't, Rawr /flex!!"
Casual - "Hmm...too expensive for me."
Both will obviously require Live membership.
Why do I think this? Because MS already has business models that cover both ends of this setup. They have the subsidized xbox subscription, and with Office 365, they have an "always-on" software requirement......both of which are successful. Office 365 to the point that it covers a full 25% of the revenue of Office.
Anyway, that's my take on some of these new, and old, rumors.

I think $500 could indeed be the launch cost (for the nonsubscription model, if they do go that route). But yeah, Battlefield 4 and other games that release this winter will be the last big games for the 360. A few will be multi-platform for a couple months, and then they'll go bye-bye.

I was considering buying the next Xbox again... but then I led to an old article that I read before, so I read it again and saw this.
Thurrott reiterated that “Microsoft will initially offer two pricing models for the console: a standalone version for $499 and a $299 version that requires a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold commitment at an expected price of $10 per month.” He also reports that the system “will launch in early November 2013.”
Then I thought to myself "Duh and/or Hello... that's why I was against the system and there obnoxious tactics."

hmmm........499 for a full version or 539 for the "cheaper" version?
yeah i smell shenanigans, wait until after the reveal on 21 May before buying into "facts" like this. As the big unveil date approaches we're going to likely see a big wave of fake rumors mixed in with a tiny bit of truth so take these articles with a huge grain of salt until we know otherwise. Definitely don't base your purchasing on rumors, there's still plenty of time to make that decision after the real info is out there
it should also be noted that the author of the blog you referenced, Thurrott, already debunked himself and said his previous reporting on the two price models now found not true

Are you making payments on your car? Same concept. Use a credit card? You can't call it a scam until you pay cash for everything. Its just using a proven business model. I bought my tv with my Best Buy card. Receiver a year later with a Visa. What's the difference? Hell, Rent-A-Center is an entire business based on this idea.

It boils down to being an informed consumer and making a choice. I think if they do go the route of offsetting the initial cost by requiring the 2 year commitment people will do it. Some will look at as well I'm already planning on the Xbox live gold payment anyway. Not saying its what I would do, but remember they are a business, it's up to the consumer to choose to make the purchase

Microsoft has registered numerous variants of XboxFusion.com (XboxFusion.biz, XboxFusion.de, XboxFusion.co.uk, etc), all of which currently redirect to the official English Xbox website. While the majority of the URLs were actually registered back in February, it was only very recently that their existence was uncovered by the sleuths at Fusible.
Obviously, registering multiple domains for something no one has ever heard of – remarkably close to unveiling a new console – carries heavy implications, but let's not get too crazy here. "Xbox Fusion" is probably just a new flavor of Mountain Dew.

Given the "entertainment hub" focus MS is pushing, it makes far more sense than Durango.

I'm by no means a legal authority but I was thinking the same thing. I don't see anything wrong with it, tons of products/businesses use the word fusion in their name.

I they couldn't use fusion for trademarking they couldn't use Durango either because it would be trademarked by Dodge. I agree they would be better served with 720 or X3

They use fusion in it, but that's not the sole name.
I don't know, even if its not trademarked, its still poor marketing.

Rumors within rumors.......very Inception-y. Obviously the official l reveal is in two weeks, but its still a fun read. The "Xbox-mini" rumor is pretty awesome.

Small but informative article. Hopefully the truth is more here than in previous rumors.

From IGN
Speculation abounds about the name of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, set to be revealed on May 21st. Will it be called Xbox 720? How about its codename, Durango? Will it be called just Xbox? Or how about Xbox Infinity?
According to sources speaking with The International Business Times, it’s the latter moniker – Xbox Infinity – that’s the name of Microsoft’s third console. “Sources related to development of the new Xbox have confirmed to IBTimes UK that the console… will be called Infinity,” the article states.
The article also states that developers have next Xbox development kits, a given considering the console is likely to launch in fewer than six months.
While this information is still unconfirmed by Microsoft – it’s unlikely we’ll have any solid confirmation before the 21st – rumors have long swirled that the next Xbox may be called Loop, or perhaps even Fusion. It may even be called Xbox 8, likely in reference to the Windows 8 operating system.
We reached out to Microsoft for comment and a representative simply told us "we’re excited to share more about the new generation of games, TV and entertainment on May 21, but have nothing further to share at this time.”

Loving the info given and can't wait till E3 or the release of One. But I do have one gripe and it's about Ghosts. I think I see two issues with Ghosts already, sliding (the new dive) and peeking around corners. The first is personal because I think it's a cheap tactic. But with peeking, we have a hard enough time with campers that we don't need to give them an easier way to hide and corner camp. I see a lot of rage quits in the future. Just my thoughts though. But I do like that we can now run mantle over barriers.

CALL OF DUTY GHOSTS!
The graphics still look similar to the old graphics but finely tuned.
I do like how detailed that brought out each character and how they made it to were you can customize your own character.
Which, hopefully, means you can bring your character into Multi player mode.
That way you can be different from others...hopefully.
But still...I can't wait to play the new CoD.
What sucks is that I probably will be waiting till the new console is out for a year.
The demand will be outrageous

for campers just use the dog perk and send him around the corner to chew some ass. LOL if I say it enough times they will put it in the game!

Uhh...they look nothing at all like the old graphics. If those are indeed gameplay graphics, they are so far ahead of MW3's it's not even funny.
