While I know this is not specifically related to service, it is highly related to post service. I have been accepted back to the Ohio State University for the spring semester starting in January. I am trying to figure out which GI Bill to use and have become completely lost. I have never used either the Montgomery GI bill or the Post-9/11 GI bill and can use one of them or both (somehow, not sure how). They both only last for 36 months, but I will be a full time student for 4 1/2 years (minus 3 summers). Which is better? How do I make it last 48 months (it says it can go 48 months on the website)? Does anyone know anything that can help? Has anyone used either or both of these before? Can someone pull me out of my f'ing head and get me the information so I understand it before I pull my hair out? Please, I am going nuts trying to figure this out and I am no longer understanding any of it. Help me please.

OSU should have a veterans representative or liaison on campus somewhere to help with just this kind of thing. If not, check with a local VFW post to see where to find your nearest Veterans Affairs liaison to help you with this.
I've used the Montgomery GI Bill before, but not the Post 9/11 version. The money I was paid came directly to me (direct deposit, of course). If you are going to get it paid to you directly, that should make it easy for you to manage your funds to help stretch it out over the time period you need it.

Talk to any advisor they can help. If you are single take the MGIB. If you are married take the post 9/11. It should be 4 years depending on your tuition plus E-5 BAH.

I'm on the post 911 and like it since I get housing allowance. I'm only getting 60% though so its only like 400-600 a month depending on how many hours I'm taking. It seemed to me that I wouldn't have gotten as much money if I chose the others instead.

Post 9/11 bill would be the best one to go with. If you're going to school full time, you'll not only have your tuition paid in full but you'll receive full E-5 pay out to go along with it. Also your books will be paid for as well. Keep in mind that where you live at will be the deciding factor on how much you get paid. Example: Md E-5 payout will defer from Ohio's payout.

Since you have both one that is free the post 911 and the Mont which you paid into. I would talk to the university veterans adviser, if you just getting a BS or BA you might want to use both but if you think of getting an advance degree use one and save the other, plus fill out the state and federal grant form if you just go out of active you mark your self as a displaced worker and you might get some nice state and federal school grants, back in the 80 I think I pulled 6, 000 from both had the GI bill plus also my reserve pay since I joined after active. Also if you active look at reserve and NG they might have some good programs. When I got out I got a 10,000 student loan program if I turned my 6 years of inactive over to a 6 year reserve contract. I got paid to go to school, lived like a king and had no loans on the back end.
If you use the Montgomery GI bill/ chapter 30, to the last month of use you can apply for the post 9-11/ chapter 33 for one year after the GI bill has expired giving you 4 years of tuition and all that. I am using the chapter 33 right now and you get paid E5 pay with BAH from the region wherever your school is located. For instance I get paid for Troy AL not Ft Benning where I live now. I also get full BAH if I take one in course class, while if I take all online courses I only get half the BAH. Luckily I'm in the guard but I am on active duty orders so I get my E7 BAH and the E5 BAH with the book stipend that comes with the post 9-11 GI bill (48 dollars per semester hour so 12*48=576). But definitely talk to the advisor about it and see what can work out for you. Good luck!

You use the post 9/11 bro. I am currently in school after getting out in February. As you know it's E-5 plus one dependent. Also you get your monthly allowance of whatever your zip code offers. Your Veteran's Service Officer for your school should be able to help more. Hopefully you filled it out online and will be receiving your benefits in the mail in a letter form. Then you take it to your registrars office and they do the rest. Make sure you contact your VSO for the school so he can track it. Any more questions just ask!

Also apply for FAFSA grant which roughly gives you $5,000 for both semesters. I know there is also a program out there if you rate 30% plus disability you can extend the life of your schooling too.

I am new to the group but work with this stuff everyday. I hope I am not to late to help you with this, but your best bet is the Ch.30 Montgomery GI Bill. It pays a max of $1564 a month and the rates are on a constant increase. The post 911 is good but if you sign up for the post 911 you can not switch to the Montgomery, but if you start with the Montgomery and don't like it you can switch to the Post 911. I have been using the Montgomery GI Bill (CH. 30) and Pale Grant and it has been working out good for me so far.

Since it's a state school, the Post-9/11 should cover all tuition so you won't have to worry about whether they participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which is good. Anyway, I went with the post-9/11 as it covered all my costs and then some, while the Ch30 wouldn't have. Actually I was using Ch30 when Ch33 was born, and there was a real night-and-day difference in finances when I shifted over. If Ch30 covers you, then I don't see the issue with using it, but for me it didn't even come close. Ch33 was much more beneficial to me. Now, this was also before they introduced the yearly cap (what is it like 17k???). If that would have been in place in the couple or three years or whatever it was where I was using the Ch33 without that cap, it would have caused me to scale back my enrollment.
But ugh OSU. Ugh (I'm a Wolverine myself).

Just an update.... the Marine Corps has stopped taking New enrollees for the 'Tuition Assistance' program. This was recently released in regards to the 'squeeze-frustration'.... Damn I just coined a new term....
