Free Roam Challenges

I thought with so many of us doing the challenges, should start a thread to track where everyone is at and posting tips/tricks for some of the more difficult ones.

Edit: 5/23 Sharpshooter II rank 4 tips added.

Outlaw 1 - Public enemy Rank 3 ( Become Public Enemy 50 times)
Survivalist II Rank 1 (8 Butterfly Weed)
Survivalist Rank 3 (4 Red Sage)
Lawbringer II Rank 2 (nosalida & i forget without dying, same session)
Sharpshooter II Rank 5 (kill 3 different types of wild animals within 10 seconds)




* Sharpshooter II 2 &3 - i did both of these ranks (2 hat shots in 5 seconds, and hat shot / disarm in 3 seconds) at fort mercer alone. clear out the front half of the fort then go up onto the rooftops with a sniper rifle and work on it that way..
this tactic is effective because ft. mercer is one of the only hideouts where you get a good vantage point.. and if you do it alone youll have plenty of time to make your shots. the baddies in the second half tend to just stand there for the most part.

* Sharpshooter II 4 (Shoot the hat off an enemy while mounted)

There is a ton of debate on the internet on how to do this, mostly people that arent as awesome as i am and couldnt get it to work claiming its a glitch/bug etc.. heres what you need to do..
on a horse. at a sprint. get a "Hat Shot!". done, complete.. the easiest way is to use casual aiming, and run at a gang hideout full on and then just adjust up with the right stick a little bit when it auto aims.

* Master Hunter - For those of you working on the master hunter challenges, when you get to the special "named" animals, check your map, there is a red blob showing where that animal can be found, you need to kill a number of that animals species, and a red skull icon will pop up and you will see a message that you have located the animal your looking for, then follow the blip, and kill it.

If we are going to try doing challenges though I would probably suggest going into a private multiplayer. So we don't have problems with little 8-12 year old douche bags. Even though it was fun beating them out of that Fort I don't know how many times we did that and having them cry every time. Example of the youth we were graced with last night "Your a faggot you shot me while I was reloading, you suck!!" I was supprised we didn't hear mommy bust down the door and give some spankings, LOL.

i know it's not a free roam challenge but i just finished sharpshooter 10 on SP with a little game manipulation.

the challenge is 6 disarms without reloading or changing weapons. I was running through fort mercer with the evans repeater so i could have 22 shots to try to get it right. got 4 disarms and thought i had it for sure but then i kept missing or killing people. I got down to my last two shots and still needed 2 disarms so i got in a good position and activated dead eye mode and lined up the 2 shots. bastard took cover just in time to make me miss but i got the other 1 but i was pissed because i figured that was it, i blew it and had to start over again. i popped open the journal to see that it still showed me as having 5 of 6 disarms and i had 20 rounds in the magazine. It seems when you go into dead eye mode it automatically gives you a full magazine and doesn't count it as a reload. entering dead eye mode a second time seems to count as a reload though so only use it once and you'll have 43 attempts to get 6 proper disarms, which doesn't sound all too tough when you look at it that way :mrgreen:

again, not actually a free roam challenge but it is a trophy that needs to be done in a public free roam session.


"Hit the Trail"
Get from Blackwater to Escalera before sundown in a public free roam session



i approached this one thinking it was going to be time consuming and a pain but turns out it's absurdly easy, so long as there are no 9 year olds trying to kill you the whole time. I clocked it at taking about 4.5 hours in-game time, riding hard the whole way with the 3rd horse (low speed but not the skin and bones, sickly looking horse) so you could leave blackwater as late as early afternoon and still make it in time. With a faster horse and a little corner cutting you could probably do this in 3 hours in-game time.

Yeah when we did it last night I was suprised how quick we got over there. We left at like 6:30 and got there around 10-11. We made one wrong turn since we were going north of the big creek or river. Still had plenty of day light left.

Does anyone know what all the "hidden trophies" are and how to get them?

hidden trophies, aside from the story related ones, are:

Dastardly
"Place a hogtied woman on the train tracks, and witness her death by train"
lol just make sure you stand pretty close to the tracks and enjoy the show


Manifest Destiny
"Kill the last buffalo in the Great Plains in single player"
like it says, kill off the buffalo, they are just west of black water. I think there's around 15 of them and they travel in a big herd. If you don't get them all don't worry, they don't respawn until you killed the last one so you can do it in several trips if need be


Heading South on a White Bronco
"Evade the US Marshals while riding the Hungarian Half-bred horse in single player"
if you didn't catch it, that's an OJ simpson reference lol. I think you need to get your bounty up to $1,000+ before the marshals start tracking you, then you just need to escape while riding that horse. I did this one and the use pardon to clear $5000 bounty at the same time


Spurred to Victory
"Complete 20 story missions without switching to a new horse at a hitching post"
now this one is a pain if you didn't know about it but a lot of people will get it without trying to. Just keep doing story missions and don't let your horse get killed or jump on a different horse. In the story mission where you are given a new horse don't worry, the counter keeps going, just keep using that horse. I always whistle first to make sure i jump on the right horse. If you are too far into the game and don't have 20 missions left then you have to start a new game to get this trophy

I am near the train station right now with a lady on the tracks. Is there a certain time that this train runs or something? Or am I suppose to ride the train and just watch her go bye bye? :?

first make sure you're not about to do a mission that requires you to ride or do something with the train. There aren't that many so it shouldn't be much of an issue. Now check your map, the position of the trains are marked with a red and a blue train icon. just chase it down to the next stop and throw her on the tracks just outside of town. They should only stay at the stations for a minute or so before leaving again so it shouldn't take long. Make sure you aren't close enough that you are in the town or the train may be waiting for you or something

Here is the way that I got the the last couple Master Hunter 2 Challenges. One of them is searching for Brumas the bear at Bear Claw Camp. When you get to the camp you will find a couple run down shacks. Get into one of these shacks and start whistling (whistling seems to draw the bears to you). The bears won't enter the shack so, you just keep flinging lead at them. after you kill a few it will say that you have found Brumas. Stay in the shack and keep whistling and ole Brumas will come to you.

Ok....now for the one with the Jaugars at Tanners Reach. Again, when you arrive you will find a shack. Get in the shack and whistle and blast away. after you kill a few it will say that you have found Kahn. Stay in the shack and whistle and he will come to the door for you.

I tried for a while to do these 2 challenges on horseback but, after a while you will have a few Bears or Jaguars coming at you at once. When they take out your horse your pretty much screwed. The other challenges in this level (Gordo the boar and Lobo the Wolf) are pretty easy compared to these other ones. Hope this helps some of you out

For the Jaguars at Tanners Reach i jumped on top of that rock just outside of the shack. For some reason the cougars can't reach you there so you just shoot them up as they run around you.




i have officially determined that Sharpshooter II is glitched for me. I've done the hotshot to disarm within 3 seconds many many times and it never unlocks. I looked around the net to find that several other people have reported this as a problem and the only person to find a solution found that after going legendary (getting to lvl 50 and then starting again like prestige in MW2 or Veteran in MAG) and all the challenges reset you may get lucky and it un-glitches itself.

Im telling you man that fort that is south of the border you have to use a sniper rifle from outside the fort. Just sit there and try it on the guys on the roof first. Make sure you are close enough though for it to register. I know it can be a pain in the ass. When I was doing it if I was to far away I could shoot their hats off but it wouldn't count. And sometimes when I was in range it still wouldn't. So your probably part right about a glitch with it only registering sometimes. I wouldn't think you have to reach a certian level before it started working again. Cajun and I both got it the way I stated above. It is probably the toughest challenge yet. Half the time when I tried to shot the rifle I would kill them. Just keep trying you will get it...

it's just randomly glitched for some people. I even used a semi-auto shotgun and it scored a hatshot and disarm in the same shot. The only guy i came across that seems to have gotten it to work again only got it after going legendary and unlocking that challenge again. I have successfully done it so many times it's ridiculous. I've done it in and out of dead eye mode, on law enforcement, civilians, and outlaws, and i've successfully done it with: semi-auto shotgun, cattleman revolver, double action revolver, high power pistol, semi auto pistol, mauser pistol, evans repeater, repeater carbine, henrys repeater, springfield rifle, rolling block rifle, and the carcano rifle. Having done it so many times now it should have registered at least once
