    Special Forces training?

So I just had my first drill with my new unit this last week and to my surprise the Master Sergeant came to me and said she had put me and another soldier from my platoon in a pool of names to be selected for SF training. What we'll be doing if chosen is a week long training event. One NCO told me it was basically a week long sniper school. Does anyone know about SF? Does this sound like their actual full training or just some kind of support training? Would I actually be SF? Wear the cool guy tag and green beret or no?

1 week sounds pretty short for any true SF training. Perhaps it's more like a 1 week try-out and if you do well they give you the option of going to a full school?

I would have to say that is a VERY short SF School. Are you sure that the NCO didn't mean that SF Soldiers where going to train you for a week??

I do think that is the most likely situation.

Im not totally sure, but pretty sure you need to be Airborne before SF school... and might need to be a ranger before sf also?

And unless your drilling unit is an SF unit, they arent going to pay for you to go to school, especially sf school, after your first drill.

my dad was sf back in the day and didn't have ranger tabs, did do airborne first though. I know the training was longer than 1 week. The tryout idea sounds probable.

Sounds like a SDM (Squad Designated Marksman) course.
Think Sniper School Lite, just pure marksmanship, no Stealth, Stalking and other stuff.

Good shit I was Volentold to go to one on Ft.Lewis, got me interested in the stuff. And had my name on the list for Sniper school for when the slots opened up. You will either be using a M4/ACOG or a M21,M25 depending on what your unit is equipped with. If you like it and are good at it, ask your NCO's about Sniper school slots. I had the best time of my life there.

Why is it this not a most likely situation?? I have had training weeks with SF and Rangers in my time. When I was in basic our ITT was taught to us by the 3rd Ranger Bat. Then again this was all probaly more likely because I was a ground pounder. I don't now I was just throwing it out there. I have said before todays Military has changed a lot since my days. You all got to remember I have been out for 17yrs. I am damn near a classic antique

    Re: Special Forces training?

If it's 1 week of "sniper like training" then she's just talking it up. It is possible however that you'd go through some training to be in an SF support unit, and you'd get to wear a maroon beret, even if you're not airborne qualified. Special Forces selection is a 2 week course, and that's just selection. after that you gotta do about 1-2 years depending on what 18x position you want to be in. I know a lot cause I was gonna go SF before my wife told me I needed to get out cause I was in the 101st, and dealt with 5th group A LOT (or at lest a whole lot more than any other random soldier I know). All in all, if it's a 1 week course that's really only 5 days in the army now-a-days, so no you won't be able to wear anything cool, unless you are gonna get attached to a SF unit, in which case, good luck, cause you gotta do their PT schedule even though you're not SF. LOLz

Sorry Timmy...I missed read Stand At Ease Solider.... Thanks Max for squaring me away. I think Sav is right on track with this one and Sig has good info also. It sounds more logical now with there input.

I think everyone else pretty much covered what you're looking at. Congratulations on the nomination, nonetheless. :!:

Indecision may or may not be my problem.
