    Re: Split Second

anyone had a chance to play this demo yet? It's pretty awesome i think. Very arcade feel to it, like Burnout games, not simulation like Turismo, so it's easy to pick up and play

Power Plays are an interesting concept that i like in this game. It's become pretty run of the mill in racing games to have power-ups floating in the track and you drive over them to get some sort of ability to attack your opponents with. Well in this game they make it slightly more realistic in that the attacks are not something that is launched magically from your vehicle, they are environment hazards that you can interact with.

I'll explain better in this example. Ok now obviously being completely realistic is not too exciting so you build up your power play meter via drifting, drafting, and jumping. There are 3 levels to the meter and it takes one segment to execute a normal power play. When there is an available action available, an icon will show above an opponent's vehicle and pressing the button will activate it. In the demo level there are helicopters that drop explosive barrels onto the road, a gas station the is rigged with explosives, various tunnel sections with more rigged explosives, and things of that nature. Once you activate it they go off so you have to time it right to hit your opponent and also to avoid catching yourself in the explosion. Then there are special power plays that cost 3 segments that will cause huge, track altering changes like a control tower smashing down and blocking the old route, or the roadway smashing down and sending you into a lower path. I played it several times and ended up playing a different route each time so it really added to the re-playability of even just a demo

I recommend giving this demo a try if you haven't yet because it is pretty fun and looks like this is going to turn out to be a great game
