E3 2010: Bethesda, id unleash 'Rage'
The winner for coolest demo weapon at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo has to go to Rage, the first-person shooter from Bethesda Softworks and studio id Software.
More on this in a moment. First, here's what Rage is all about
: humans face extinction as an asteroid hurls toward Earth. To help preserve mankind, leaders take a group of humans and bury them beneath the planet surface in pods. The player's character leaves his pod and ventures out into a post-impact world.
Rage takes place within an open-world structure, so players have freedom to roam and select a series of missions. The first mission developers demonstrate features the town of Wellspring, as players aid an inhabitant responsible for the water supply. A gang is attempting to poison the water with toxins, and you must stop them.
The demo shifts to players moving through a series of tunnels to the enemy stronghold so they can thwart their efforts. As the lead character draws closer, he finds a room with about three enemies.
Cue up E3's coolest weapon, a radio-controlled car bomb. Setting it on the ground, the player drives it into the room and blows up everyone inside.
Players will have a variety of standard firearms such as machine guns and pistols to choose from. They'll also have gear such as sentry bots, a high-tech crossbow that shoots electrically charged bolts and a boomerang style device called the wingstick, which looks like the glaive weapon in Dark Sector.
Although it was not featured in the demo, Rage will also emphasize vehicular combat. Players can snag their own "super buggy," according to Bethesda, and outfit it with special parts and weapons.
Rage looks fantastic and combat seems intense. But with similar open-world shooters such as Borderlands and Bethesda's own Fallout series, I'm curious to see what id Software does to differentiate Rage from the pack.
The game will be available for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011.
