Coast Guard copter crashes off Washington coast

    By MANUEL VALDES
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

Rescue crews are looking for a missing Coast Guardsman after a helicopter crashed off the Washington coast Wednesday morning.

The MH-60 Jayhawk Coast Guard helicopter with four crew members crashed off James Island, near La Pushe.

Two of the members were retrieved by members of the Quileute Nation minutes after the crash, and taken to local hospitals. Their conditions were not known.

Petty officer Nathan Bradshaw says a third member has been located, but that person's condition was not immediately known.

Bradshaw said they have not determined what may have caused the helicopter to go down.

Two crew members were rescued by tribal members of the Quileute Nation.

Darryl Penn, the harbormaster for the Quileute Nation in La Push, heard the crash and saw the wreckage. Penn said he and his cousin raced out to the wreckage on a small boat and were able to reach two of the members, who were "pretty banged up." He found one of the crew members in the water, wet suit on, and the other in the wreckage.

He said they were conscious but in pain.

"You know, these guys are out here for us, for the guys who fish," Penn said. "When they go down, it's scary."

Bradshaw says the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was traveling from Astoria, Ore., to Sitka, Alaska.

The Coast Guard says two of the crew members who were retrieved have been transferred to a local hospital.

The Coast Guard deployed a MH 65 dolphin and another MH 60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and response crews to search for the missing crew members.

The MH-60 Jayhawk is a twin-engine helicopter with a crew of four, similar to the Army UH-60. Petty Officer Kip Wadlow in Washington, D.C., says it is primarily used for search and rescue and homeland security missions. An MH 60 Jayhawk helicopter crashed in the Utah mountains in March - all five crew members survived.

Coast Guard investigating copter crash at La Push

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEATTLE -- Investigators headed to La Push on the Washington coast Thursday to begin looking for the cause of a Coast Guard helicopter crash that took the lives of three crewman and injured the fourth.

Coast Guard spokesman Nathan Bradshaw in Seattle said the work will eventually involve recovering the wreckage from the water.

The low-flying copter apparently hit power lines Wednesday and went down a few hundred yards off La Push, which is about 100 miles west of Seattle on the Olympic Peninsula.

The MH-60 Jayhawk was flying from Astoria, Ore., to Sitka, Alaska, where the crew is based.

The survivor is recovering from a broken arm and leg at Seattle hospital.
