    Unhappy Router Upgrade

Alright as some if you may already know, my router is slowly dying. I can't get it to stay live on the UPNP, it will erase the settings after a couple of days. Therefore making it very challenging to stay connected on my PS3. I have a Netgear G router, I have had it for about four years. I am going to see if there is a firmware update. If that doesn't work who has a suggestion for the best "affordable" router out there. I was looking into some Linksys N gaming routers, any suggestions would be welcome.

Most of the time, the gaming routers are overrated unless you are doing extreme gaming. I am running a new Linksys E1000, and have no issues at all. I think it runs about $80?

    Router Upgrade

I run dual routers, a Belkin wireless N is first in line, which for stability is doing a far better job than my linksys dual band gigabit router.

Most of the time I would suggest linksys, which are known to last and perform well. But in this case, stay away from there dual anythings. If I didn't have a need for the gigabit speed I would have chunked it already.

    That is a good point.
I definitely recommend external antennas if you have a wide area you are covering. They really do make a dramatic difference in coverage and signal.

Running a trendnet (a lot like the one above). Been running great and never had any problems out of it.

cant go wrong with Linksys, since CISCO=Linksys. Ive only had one Linksys die and it was due to physical damage from moving.

    Re: Router Upgrade

I hear the Trendnet and Belkins are both really good.

I don't mind the Linksys, they are not terrible, but they aren't the top of the food chain anymore either.

I use my Uverse wireless router now. Its a Cisco. and it rawks.

    Re: Router Upgrade

I always had problems with Belkin routers. I had a Linksys for about 5-6 yrs then it died on me so I switched to an Apple AirPort Extreme and love it. I've had no problems with it and I haven't gotten dropped from my PS3 since I installed it...knock on wood .

    Re: Router Upgrade

I have my wireless router right next to my PS3 but I have it hardwired to the router so I don't know if doing it wireless has anything to do with lag.

    Re: Router Upgrade

you will get more lag through wireless than you would through being hardwired but the quality of your router would really determine how much, if any, extra lag you would see. Also the faster the internet connection you have, the better

Fiber to the Node and cat5e to the house is freakin sweet, I get average 13mb to the desktop.

    Re: Router Upgrade

I've always been a Netgear fan. Earlier this year I got the Netgear WNR3500L. I think its neat because its specifically made to be an Open Source router that can handle a handful of different router firmwares that are available out there which open up a bunch of features that you wouldn't have on a stock firmware. I'm running Tomato firmware on it, and it has been running rock solid ever since I got it.
