No Pitbulls Allowed on Military Bases

So I saw an episode of Pit Boss recently that featured a military family who had to get rid of their pit bull mix dog because the military no longer allows pit bulls or pit bull mixes on bases, and those soldiers who had them had to get rid of them or they would be euthanized (sp?). Has anyone else heard about this :?:

Yeah, I don't know if its an actual rule or not, the show just said it was, or at least the military family in the show said it was a rule. I'm hoping a USMG member who lives on base can shed some light on the subject.

It is true in Ft. Drum in NY and in Ft. Jackson SC. I think that it is pretty much at all the bases.

I live in "base" housing. It is privatized but its ran by the navy. By 2012 all pits have to be out of housing along with other types of aggressive dogs.

good rule. they're already outlawed in Dade county down here. Hopefully it will be the same in Broward soon.

I personally don't agree with the rule. It is all in the way the dog is raised. I have seen the way kids treat animals. Guy at my last base had a pit and said he is the most loving caring dog. Just don't mess with the family and that dog wouldn't do anything.

I agree completely, especially to go as far as euthanizing the dogs if they aren't gotten rid of by other means. I've had my pit bull "Bud" since he was 8 weeks old, he's now going to be 7 this year. He has done no harm to anyone, he jump on you cause he's excited or sniff you to death, but other than that he's a big teddy bear, even with my 11 month old (who likes to tug at his tail and ears)![attachment=0:1kbpp72v]7-03-10 073.jpg[/attachment:1kbpp72v]

My dad was a cop for 22 years in fort lauderdale and he had to shoot 4 pits on calls where the dog either killed an animal or bit a kid in his last 4 years on the job. Take your chances, I don't ever want to say "I told you so" on this one.

I don't agree with this rule either but as for all in the way the dog is raised, yes I agree for the most part. My pitt mix Daeja was about 3 months old when I adopted her. She was found roaming around practically starving. It became very apparent when she was about 6 months old that she did not like men and we have no clue why. There are only a handful that she loves. She has been treated like a queen for her 8 years and she still doesn't like men. If a strange guy comes to my house she will bark and growl at them til I tell her to shut it, then she will keep herself between them and me and the boys. If they move in our direction she will give a warning growl. God forbid if you ever try to get in our yard if nobody is home. A friend needed to get something they had left in our yard and my x told him to throw a hot dog and then run and get it. I came home to see the guy quaking outside my gate and Daeja raising hell. When he told me what the x said I wanted to smack the guy upside the head for actually attempting it. Crazyiest thing I ever seen her do was she barreled head first into a wooden child safety gate to "protect" me when I had a repair guy over. She busted two slats out and wasn't even phased. I gave her the "look" and pointed to her crate and she went with such a sad face but no fight. Maybe it's the Shepard in her too that is driving that protective streak.

Had another pitt mix tho that was abused before I got him and he was the sweetest we'd ever had. He loved everyone he met. I lost him at 1 1/2 yrs old to Lymphoma. Daeja looks exactly like him down to the markings and that's why we call her that for DejaVu

I've bitch-slapped two 15 year old kids who thought they'd be cool and try to steal my wallet. Also pulled my 9mm on a punk-ass 14 year old who thought he was a gangster with a .22, and forgot to take the safety off. We should totally euthanize those little bastards, because they were raised so wrongly.

Strange how this doesn't sound stupid when we're talking about dogs. It's 100% how they were raised/treated. Oh, and the 3 most aggressive dogs, by breed, in America? Dachshunds, aka weiner dogs, Chihuahuas, and Jack Russell Terriers. Pitbulls aren't even in the top 10. There are just a lot of really, really stupid people who don't take the time to raise their dog properly.

I've never had problems with my neighbors Pit. She hangs out in the back yard with my dog, since I have a fully fenced yard, and does just fine. Sometimes she'll come inside and play with my wife's cats too. She plays with my other neighbor's daughter just fine. A third neighbor has a mini pinscher that I've literally punted across the yard because it kept trying to bite me. They thought it was "funny."

I don't know about the nightly news where you live but I can't remember any killer daschund, chihuaha, or jack russel attacks. Have to be about a pack of them before you'd even notice. I'm sure how you raise a dog will probably help to determine how it behaves but I'm not betting my kids on the dog rearing abilities of my neighbors.

To be honest, I don't remember any killer pit reports either. Just attacks by animals that are neglected and beaten. And if it doesn't fit the stereotypes, why would they report it anyway? It's not like it's sensational news.

And as we're talking about children, it doesn't matter how small a dog is, when your kid isn't much bigger. Only how aggressive they are. In which case yeah, you should probably keep your kids away from any dogs but your own.
