    Unhappy PS3 backup restore issue

Okay this is a long shot… or a lost cause, but I thought I’d ask those tech savvy out there.

So I got my new PS3 and was trying to upload the old backup I did on my old PS3 before it YLoD’d. Plugged in the external HDD and about 45 mins into the restore we got a power outage for some frickin’ reason and the backup file on the HDD got corrupted. I had another copy on my computer so I tried to put it back on the HD and do the restore again but no luck.

The first restore attempt managed to put back my Fiancee’s profile and a few of her saved games but my profile and all my stuff didn’t restore. Roughly 10% restored.

I called PS3 support and they tried to help me. We reformatted the external HDD for fat32 and replaced the copy from the computer and tried again. Reset the new PS3 to factory and tried it again. Tried a number of other tricks but still no luck.

Since my old PS3 crapped out completely, I don’t have the option of doing a Peer-to-Peer transfer so I’m kinda S.O.L . I think. Any of you guys have any other ideas?

    Re: PS3 backup restore issue

what is happening when you try to do the restore with the new backup file?

other than getting that copy to work i can't think of anything. Maybe pop out the hard drive from your old PS3 and put it in your new PS3 to make a new back-up file and then switch back to the new hard drive and use the newly created back-up file? Not sure if that would even work, it might require you to reformat the old hard drive when you put it into a new console but if nothing else is working then it may at least be worth a shot

    Re: PS3 backup restore issue

Yeah, I think I'm SOL too. Or at least that's what I've settled with.

I was getting an error message, MaximusR3, but now it just says "no backup file found". If I put the old drive in the new system, it will want to format it first thing so unfortunately I can't even do that.

One option that just came up today was that a new Play-n-Trade store opened up near me over the weekend. They said they fix Xboxes and PS3's. The guy quoted me $50 non-refundable to diagnose and then $80 to fix if fixable. Go figure that I would find this out right after I dropped $400 on a new system. If I get my old system fixed I can try an adhoc swap between the two systems and then either have a second PS3 or sell it to my buddy for cheap. Thinking about it but Play-n-Trade is backed up for 2 weeks. Still, I may do it.
