Remington Reveals Army’s Updated Sniper Rifle

    I WANT! I WANT!

The blogs are abuzz over the Army’s new contract for rebuilds of the venerable, bolt-action M24 sniper rifle after PEO Soldier requested radical changes last year.

Our friends at Soldier Systems and The Firearms Blog had the details first, but we want to make sure to reacquaint our readers with the debate and the requirements as put forth by the PEO for Soldier Weapons, Lt. Col. Dough Tamilio, when we spoke with him back in March.

Indeed the new “rebuild” — which basically looks like a whole new rifle — puts on an AR-style forearm, an EBR-like adjustable stock, a Mk-25-esque lower (but with a collapsable bolt handle) and a new “reach out and touch you” caliber of the .300 WinMag.

The Army signed a $28 million contract on Sept. 20 for Remington to rebuild 3,600 M24s into the new M24E1 standard.

Our good friends at Tactical-Life.com have some inside gouge on why the Army made its shift.

The need for the M24E1 was first identified by in 2006 by 10th Mountain Division soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Once the military identified the need, Senator Charles Schumer and Representative Michael Arcuri led the effort in Congress to ensure that the program received crucial funding in 09 and 10.

Trials for award of the contract began with an open competition in January of this year and lasted nine months. With Remington winning the award, the upgrading process will now begin in earnest.

Tamilio said back in March that the range of the 7.62/308 M24 was a concern in the Afghan fight, and that the service had decided on the .300 WinMag after some close evaluations. That’ll raise the hackles of .338 Lapua fans (and their British allies) who say that’s the record-shot holding round, after all…

But Remington has preempted that debate by allowing the “Modular Sniper Rifle” to transform easily from a .300 WinMag to a .338 Lapua or a 7.62 shooter.

And I’m sure we’ll hear lots of “what’s wrong with the good ‘ole M-14? banter as well.

But what’s done is done. Now, we’d love to hear from one-shot-killers out there who’ve seen or used the M24E1. What do you think?

Indecision may or may not be my problem.

Very cool, although I'm surprised they didn't go with the faster and meaner .300 RUM.

I'm actually looking into getting a Remington 700 sps .300wm. Anyone have any thoughts on it? (I think this can go in this post, I feel it's related)

Re: Remington Reveals Army’s Updated Sniper Rifle

Can our USMG points go towards that purchase.....hmmmm I'll be blogging all day for that one. Hahaa. 300 Win Mag was the 1000 meter champ for about 20+ years which the late Carlos Hathcock won the Camp Pendalton (I think) shoot back in the post Vietnam era.

Psycho I bought a Rem 700 LTR (Light Tactical Rifle) in 308 win which is basically a slimmed up and lighter version of the 700 SPS. Great rifle for around the $700 price range that can drill tacks all day at a 100 meters. My rifle is sadly about a 900 meter rifle due to the shorter 20" fluted barrel, but the weight of the rifle is very manageable for such a precision rifle. I shoot the 168 grainers from it at about 2615 fps that is if you hand load the rounds, you can easily break the 1/4" group range. After you get the rifle, I strongly recommend getting a Jewel two stage replacement trigger put in it and also a quality detachable box magazine (Not the HS Precision one) Remington is known for making great guns for their price range, but sadly their factory triggers suck. Best investment in a rifle is getting a great trigger, the Jewel two stage breaks like glass every time which should easily tighten your groups up. Next thing on the list is shell out some serious cash for good glass....ouch

Damn I gotta get to the range now.

Snipers don't go out alone anymore, we haven't done that since Vietnam.

USUALLY, when i say that I man it really depends on the units SOP and what the sniper team wants to carry, could also depend on the mission.
So to answer your question, there will always be a spotter with a M4 carbine, usually with a M203 40mm grenade launcher attached and a ACOG optic. The 'Shooter' most often will have his main weapon (either a M21 or M24, once again mission dependent) in a "Drag Bag", and a M4 being carried. Additionally most will have a M9 9mm pistol on their hip.
Hope this answers your question, also if you want to be a 'Sniper' in a RECON platoon you have to be either a 11b or 19d. Don't know what them Marines do, sooooooo maby one of them can answer that for ya...

Not 100% sure on which USMC MOS you need to be to be selected for scout sniper school, i heard rumor that anyone potentially could be selected but i imagine your chances of being selected would be massively higher in an 0300 infantry MOS

I believe you do have to be in an 03 MOS. You have to have a 300 PFT and pass the indoc to become a PIG ( Professionally Instructed Gunman) in the STA Platoon (Surveillance and Target Acquisition) then the Chief Scout Sniper will decide when and if you go to Sniper School and if you pass you will become a HOG (Hunter Of Gunman).

I have a friend that was a Chief Scout Sniper with 3/7 Scout Sniper Platoon, 29 Palms.

Hope this helps and this is all I could remember from what my friend told me so don't quote me on the exact process but I know this is pretty damn close.

Any infantry MOS. Marine I used to drink with was a S/S. Might have changed since then...but I doubt it.

pretty much same thing in the Army, Battalion tells the Company that they have so many Sniper school slots, then tells each Company who tells each Platoon SGT (E-7) or LT(0-1/0-2) that your platoon has 1 or 2 slots for guys to go to sniper school, and asks each section leader (E-6) who he thinks would be good fit for the B4 skill identifier (Sniper).

So its pretty much up to your NCO if you get to go to Sniper School or not.

Well, I been looking into rifles a lot and this is gonna get expensive! I have decided to go with a .308 instead of a 300WM. And since it is going to be so expensive I had to make a deal with my wife to buy the parts in stages, and since the rifle is pretty much useless until you get some glass for it it I am taking ASig's advice and picking up a Jewell trigger system. Thanks ASig!!!
