So while flipping through my monthly issue of OXM, I noticed in one of their sections they had a small blurb discussing everyone's favorite CEO, Bobby Kotick.
In it, Bobby states his dissatisfaction and disapproval of XBL's marketing strategy. Not so much the pay part, but rather that he isn't getting his share of the profits. Bobby goes on to state that 60% of the XBL audience pay to play CoD primarily. And as his title has such a large majority of the Live users are primarily on Live to play Kotick's game, he asserts that Microsoft should be kicking back some of that revenue, for the priveledge of hosting CoD.
Shelving the "Should XBL be free to play or payed" discussion for the moment, I'm most interested in his statement that 60% of the market on Live payes primarily to play CoD. While CoD does have it's moments, I find it massively humerous to make this kind of statement. This allusion claims that CoD is the Xbox juggernaut, and games like Halo, Gears, or Madden, which are massive online juggernauts, are such a huge minority to the greatness that is CoD. That the other franchises under his helm, such as Guitar Hero, are so massively underrepresented compared to CoD. That the market impact for games like Mass Effect, Fable, Fallout, or Assassin's Creed, which aren't primarily multi-player, are absolutely negligable. That XBLA games are a pittance compared to the greatness that is CoD.
But what do you expect from someone as delusional as Bobby "My dick is bigger than yours, so you should pay me for it" Kotick.
Personally I absolutely hope he gets his wish, that he suspends all CoD console game creations and makes his ultimate CoD MMO type game, gets his $15 a month, plus the hundreds of micro-transactions he'll load it with.......and it falls flat on it's face. That way Activision will finally be able to fire him and get someone who actually plays video games.
