    Specific Reciever question.

Not looking for a full home theater breakdown, but I am looking for a new reciever.

Under $400. Any suggestions on brand?

I have one similar to this and I love it. I am partial to Sony since I have had great luck with them. All my previous sony equipment has never died on me.

I recently bought one of the new 3D Onkyo receivers. Wanted to future proof somewhat as well as have enough HDMI connections for future consoles.

I'm still debating on a 3D tv . But for those that are in a budget and can't buy a reciever that is 3D ready ...no need. You can run a HDMI cable from console to tv and run optical from console to reciever. And with some minor tweeking you will be satisfied. 3D glasses are expensive!

no offence guys, but i see this 3d thing as a gimic. It just not natural you are tricking your brain, and it doesnt like it.

Ive been listening to Leo Laporte's weekly Tech Guy podcast, he does a segment on multimedia home theater. And he has been talking about UHDV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_H...ion_Television). He has seen several prototypes working, and swears that this technology is far better than anything 3d can do.

So I finally picked up a reciever. Did it last Friday, my first, and likely last, Black Friday purchase.

    Got a Sony SDR_DN1010. (http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...-33976245.html). Was a massive deal.

Love having the extra HDMI's, and not having to switch between them on the tv. Only downer is apparently I'm too stupid to get a picture from my xbox when it's plugged through the receiver, and only has picture when it's plugged through the tv itself. Not sure why that is yet.

Does ure xbox have HDMI or componet cables? Im assuming u have a HDMI cord for the output from ure reciever to your tv? If ure xbox box is componet u might be having upchanneling problem. I had the same problem with my new reciever when i tried to play the wii. I just had to find the right setting.

On this side or the other, we will meet once again.

Yeah, I'm running component to HDMI. Have been postponing buying a 360 HDMI because they're stupidly expensive.

There are several websites that sell HDMI cables from 3 ft to 25 ft in length . That is how I have purchased my cables . I paid about 8 to 9 dollars for the 3 ft. with gold tip. I also bought a 6 ft for 15 dollars give or take a few bucks if I find the sight I will post here . For picture to tv .From xbox to receiver you will need a optical cable . Not sure if you have a newer or older xbox . If its newer you run fiber optic cable from xbox to receiver. Hdmi cable from xbox to tv. This way you can play your xbox and hear the sound through the tv speakers and also see the picture with the receiver off. Once you turn on receiver select optical output that you plugged your optical cable to from your xbox and now the sound will come through the surround speakers. You may have to lower your volume on your tv because the sound will still come out due to the HDMI being plugged directly to your tv. If you have any questions please ask I will try to help.

Here's a link to the HDMI cables I have.
They work just fine, and aren't stupidly expensive.

Yeah, problem is I've never really double-checked, but I'm almost positive I've got a pre-07 Pro, so I'd need to buy the HDMI with the adaptor plug, which come to think about it, I don't even know if they make them anymore. I've never had a reason before now to hook up anything but component.
