    Talking My Phone Tethering Saga

For those who dont know that Tethering is; its when you hook up your phone to a Laptop or tower via a USB cable and use your cell phone as a wireless VPN "modem".

As part of my work i must spend many hours riding to Atlanta and Back, and the new phone I got ATT said I could not tether with it.

Yet being the network Guru I am I knew anything is possible with the right tools. So I started digging....
From the Pantech website I found a really nifty toolset, what they call their 'PC Suite' so i downloaded it and installed it.

One problem I was having was finding the proper drivers for Windows 7 to recognize the phone as a VPN modem. Pantech's PC suite came bundled with various drivers for the phone to be used from everything from contacts, to USB mass storage, to a Media player.....and WaLa! with the driver installed now I have a nice icon in my 'Network and Sharing Center' for 'Dial-Up and VPN connection'

Now i can be on the Internets with my laptop anywhere!!! and ATT said It couldnt happen...well piss on you, and I fully intend to use my unlimited data to its fullest.

Oh and for the other tech heads like myself, Ive gotten an average of 1.5 to 2mb down and 300kbs up while in ATT 3g area, and around 500kbs down outside of 3g coverage.

I need to figure out how to root my EVO so I can get the wifi hotspot for free. There is a way but it's to much crap for me to do to get it done. I just pay the 30 extra dollars a month for it now. When I know of an easier way I will root it.

its ashame the way the cellular carriers lock out the 'root' account, thats really all your doing when you 'root' it, you are enabling the root account. You see the android OS runs on a modified Linux kernel, and the Root account is the master can do anything account. Or Administrator for ya windows fan boys.

Exactly I don't know why they lock it either. Since it is now legal to jailbreak and root your phones it should be easier to do. I guess manufacturers don't like us having control of our phones.
