Sony has unveiled a new Uncharted ahead of its big reveal at this weekend's VGA Awards, with first details confirming that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception takes the wise-cracking hero to the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula.

Although the official reveal won't be coming until Saturday night's awards ceremony, Entertainment Weekly has gone live with its first impressions of the game, again developed by Naughty Dog.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is said to focus on the relationship between Sully and Drake as the pair search for a lost city in the Arabian Peninsula and across the Rub' al Khali Desert. T.E Lawrence is said to be an inspiration for the story and setting.

"When we first came up with the idea of sand, you see everyone's eyes light up here and go, 'Yeah, that's going to be really hard — let's do it!'" said the game's creative director Ann Henning.

"We're a bunch of nerds. We just look for something that will be a technical, artistic challenge, and allowed us to push into an area of the world and history we've never tapped into before," added Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception's new features include the ability to fight multiple enemies as well as 'enhanced backward climbing' - though quite how that pans out remains to be seen.

While no specifics were given, the report also states that much attention is being paid to Uncharted 3's online and co-op features.

A teaser trailer accompanying the reveal shows the new desert setting. "All men dream," says the Nolan North-voiced Nathan Drake, "but not equally".

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves proved to be one of the PlayStation 3's greatest games, earning IGN's Game of the Year in 2009.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon will show off the first live demo of hotly-anticipated Playstation 3 exclusive Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception next Monday, Dec. 13. Show producer Gavin Purcell Tweets that developers Naughty Dog will be on hand to demonstrate the game to show host and gamer Fallon.

Watching this has put me the closest to buying a PS3 I've ever been. I've always been in to single player 3rd person story games, like Assassin's Creed, Oblivion, and Fable. More so as I get older. This is just awesome looking though. /Jealous of PS3 exclusive.

No idea about the first, and while the second was cool looking, it didn't have me checking the budget to see if I really could scrounge up enough cash to slip one under the tree. Unfortunately, I'd have to return at least one of the earrings I bought the wife for christmas......and for some reason I don't think she'll go for it.

that is a good point. I wonder if they have some sort of solution to this because they were saying non-plus members would have to wait until July to try it out

New post on the PS Blog this morning. This one further discusses the multiplayer aspect, 3D support, and this one particular juicy bit that caught my attention:

UNCHARTED 3’s splitscreen multiplayer enables dual PSN logins.
“You don’t have to be on some guest account,” Richmond said. “You and your friend can sit down in splitscreen and level up both of your characters. We support two different PSN ID logins.”

has anyone else tried out the beta yet? It's still a bit rough, after a few minutes of it running my ps3 fan kicks into high gear and the frame rate drops and studders, and that's even just navigating the menus so something in the programming must be really pushing the limits. I played around with the settings and loadouts but by the time i got to editting my player emblem it was starting to get choppy on me so i quit and rebooted and jumped into a match. I played for a few minutes, got 4 or 5 kills and ranked up and then a minute later the frame rate started dropping again and then it froze up. I haven't gotten back on yet so i don't know if it saved any of my progress in that match. Naughty Dog says they are working on sorting it out so hopefully a patch or hotfix goes out soon

that was quick. Naughty dog tweeted this info a couple hours ago regarding the now released beta patch

Naughty_Dog Just pushed v1.01 for #UNCHARTED3 Beta in the US. Other regions will roll out over time. Go to XMB, relaunch Beta to d/l the update

Naughty_Dog If your PS3 reboots - that can happen, up to twice, and it should all still work out normally.

Naughty_Dog FYI - regarding 1.01 - I'll have patch notes in the morning. It's been a long day for us all.

UPDATE:
I'm glad to say that the patch is only 18mb, so they aren't making us download the ent ire beta client with every update (yeah, i'm looking at you MAG beta...)
downside is I have no idea if it fixes the issues I was having yesterday because i get an error right off the title screen 10/10 attemts. This error seems to be widespread but I believe it is a server side error as it came up yesterday too when they took it down to fix something. So hopefully ND has just taken the server offline, intentionally or unintentionally, and will easily be able to correct this without another patch

Just played like 5 matches everything seemed fine, the new movement of the character takes some getting used to, it's much slower than uc2 but I still love it. My ps3 kept crashing when trying to update the patch. Here's a way that works so it don't crash.

Wait 10 seconds, then press X. The patch will download after that.

IT will crash if your hard drive light is blinking and your try to update.

I was also able to get into some matches earlier and all the issues i ws having previously were pretty much ironed out.

When I tried to do the update it ended up working exactly like they said in the twitter post, it rebooted twice and then installed on the 3rd time. Weird how it works that way but oh well, i was just glad to see it was a small patch

I got an email with another beta code but I think pretty much everyone has Plus so they already have it anyway so I've got no idea what to do with it. Anyone know anybody that doesn't currently have Plus that would be interested in this beta?
