    Hello All,

I run two health clubs in Juneau, Alaska. I've worked in the health and fitness industry for several years now. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. If I don't know the answer off-hand I will certainly find it for you. Stay healthy!

    Red face GI Jane?

    Hello Lady,

I can make some suggestions but I'll need some info from you.

Do you belong to a gym?
Where are you at physically now?
Do you have any physical limitations?
Have you exercised before? If so what did you do?
Do you have access to a computer? (JK)
What sort of exercises do you enjoy?

One of the worst things to happen to health and fitness was the tagline "No pain, no gain". I hate that as it scares a lot of people to the point where they won't try.

    cheers,
    ron

Do you belong to a gym? No
Where are you at physically now? on the sofa
Do you have any physical limitations? My lower back can be a bit iffy
Have you exercised before? If so what did you do? 10 yrs intense aerobic 4/5 times a week...10 years ago last 10 years have been more off than on. Spurts and starts really.
Do you have access to a computer? (JK) lol!
What sort of exercises do you enjoy? none? lol! used to enjoy treadmill but it bores me these days. Dance aerobics I used to love, and cycling but again I've lost my mojo for that sort of thing now. Never really got into resistance training as it just seemed boring and never felt like I'd worked hard enough.

    Uh...

You are a funny gal On the sofa lol.
It sounds as though you need something more stimulating and motivating than working out on machines. Group fitness classes , used to be aerobics, have come a long way these past ten years. You can now get a full body workout, not just aerobic, in group fitness classes.

Group fitness (GF) classes are a great way to develop a positive connection with other members and the instructors. That is the main reason why GF members stay on the path to fitness much longer than machine members.

There are a lot of stimulating and motivating GF classes out there. For cardio/fat burning I'd recommend step aerobics, boxing/martial arts based classes or Zumba which is a dance based cardio workout. For a full body workout there are weight based classes that can be fun. And don't forget balance and flexibility classes such as yoga. I always feel taller after a yoga class.

Not all instructors are good at what they do. A bad instructor can do a lot more harm than good. I recommend that you do your homework and interview a club before you sign up. A great resource is to ask people you know, or members, what they like, or don't like, about the club they are a part of. Most clubs offer free guest passes. Take advantage of that.

A good instructor engages their class in a positive manner. They shouldn't talk too much, just enough to positively reinforce their members as well as give feedback on technique and give alternatives to difficult techniques. Music is an important part of a good class.

There's a lot to consider when looking to make a lifestyle change. Just remember that change doesn't have to be drastic in order to yield positive results. Small changes can make a huge difference in the long run. Starting anything can be difficult and getting used to change doesn't take that long. Keep in mind that it only takes 21 days to turn change into habit. Give it a try and you just may surprise yourself. I hope this helps.

    cheers,
    ron

Thanks Ron...it must have took you ages to type that

I need a home program though...I don't really like people all that much (in the flesh I mean) Surprisingly, I'm very anti-social...it's true!

Anyway, I used to do group aerobics for 10 years (in my more sociable days lol) and I loved it... but I can't be doing with groups of people so much these days.

Can't do step either cos of my Achilles...for some reason it just causes it to hurt. I forgot about that. (and yeah before you ask...I was stepping right lol)

I did a yoga course once and hated it....I found it way too boring.

There's no hope for me really is there lol!

If you need a program and don't like groups I suggest looking online for assistance. One resource we use at our club is dotFit. It costs about as much as a gym membership. It offers custom advice on nutrition and you can get a custom workout routine. What I really like about dotFit is the calorie counter that is tailored for you. Most people under estimate their caloric intake by 20%. That number doubles for people who are obese.

Try this for one month: Get a small notepad that you can carry with you all day. In it log everything you eat. It is amazing that just by being aware of what you eat you will be less likely to over eat. Not only that you will be more likely to eat healthier. I'm not saying that you should diet or consciously change what you eat. Try it and see what happens. I hope I don't sound preachy

Clearly you need to give up the PS3, and get a 360 and Kinect, so you can play Zumba Kinect, or Dance Central.

Thanks everyone...My daughter's friend teaches Zumba actually. I should get her over to my home gym (garage lol) and get her to sort me out!

I have a treadmill, stationary bike, free weights and some other random items in the garage but I just find it boring. My husband is fitting the overhead projector in there for me now though with a dvd player so that will help and I can do some aerobics videos which will be cool cos it's a pretty big space, and more than enough room for me and my daughter to workout together.

My daughter is big on the spinning classes and aerobics too so we can push each other

Lol well yeah ok you're right, and I could just go buy one and tell him tough titty lol!

    BUT

The reason that I'm not allowed is because we can't afford to buy a console and pay the monthly fees PLUS I'd need the Kinect too of course and although I'm the boss round here I do respect his point of view some of the time and I agree that I couldn't afford to waste money on yet another console and more games when we already have 2 PS3's, a Wii, a DS, a DSi, 4 flat screens... and I've just had a new iphone 4 don't forget , so I am very spoilt as it is

Nope only one thing for it...you have to get a PS3

There's a combo system you can get for around $300. And the Live subscription is 5 bucks a month.

I'm sorry, there's a combo system you can get for about £200. And a Live membership is £40 annually. Or about £3.33 per month.
