I do like that Senator Barbara Boxer and some other Senators are trying to push a bill that if a government shutdown happens paychecks should cease for Congress and the President as well.

That being said, I'd like it better if this didn't happen at all.

Yeah, I'm sorry. The troops should be the absolute last people to not get payed. The first should be the congressmen who let this happen, followed immediately by the President, his staff, and all the other fuckers who get 400k a year for politicing.

It seems like military would be considered essential personnel and therefore not subject to the shutdown. Then again, I don't really know much about what actually happens when there is a government shutdown.

They extended it by three weeks so it wouldn't be until next month if it happened.

Coming from the White House. Few more days before the shutdown. What makes this shutdown different from the last to where the troop pay wasn't affected last government shutdown?

What happens to military personnel pay (according to an NPR article):

"They will be paid through Friday, and will continue to work after that and "earn money." But, they will not receive paychecks until Congress approves a spending plan. -- "

The last time the Govt actually went into Furlough was in 1996. If I remember correctly it only lasted a few days tops (I was a contractor and in training at the time when it went into effect and it was over by the time I got home). If we do go into furlough I would be surprised if it lasted a significant period of time.

I've been getting annoyed with it too because we're trying to run our programs on stipends they send us in our CRA requests and then they are going to scream later down the line that we didn't obligate our funds fast enough and probably use it as an excuse to cut more funds from already underfunded programs.

There was a saying that cracked me up in my last Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Execution Course. It went something like this:

When faced with a 20 year Threat
the DoD responds with an 11 year plan
Laid out in a 6 year Defense Program
    Managed by 3 year Personnel
Attempting to deliver on a 2 year budget
which in reality is funded by a 1 year Appropriation
which is typically provided 4-6 Months Late
and was actually finalized over a 3 day Holiday Weekend
and Approved in a 1 hour Decision Brief

Just makes you shake your head.

    Update

    DISCLAIMER FROM DFAS:

The Administration hopes that a government shutdown can be averted, so that servicemembers and DoD employees can be paid in full and on time. If the funding bill is enacted at the last minute, it is possible that payroll payments could be split into two electronic deposits or checks, but the total amount normally paid will not be affected.

If a funding bill is not passed, resulting in a government shutdown, the Department of Defense will have no legal authority to pay military members or civilian employees for the days during which the government is shut down. The current Continuing Resolution Act (CRA) expires at midnight on April 8. Active and Reserve military members will be paid on time for pay earned prior to the expiration of the CRA -- approximately half of their normal mid-month payment. Civilians will be paid for each day worked through Friday, April 8. Because the normal pay period ends Saturday, April 9, this will usually equate to a full paycheck. The shutdown will not affect payments to retirees or annuitants because they are not paid from CRA appropriations.

Once another CRA or an appropriations act is signed into law, normal disbursement of pay will resume for pay earned after employees return to work. Excepted employees who perform duty during the shutdown will be entitled to retroactive payments, as will servicemembers. For furloughed employees, Congress will have to provide authority for retroactive payments to be made.

This whole scenario is just a bunch of crap no matter how you go about it. Pay the military all it's due and cut the pay of all politicians in half. Two problem solved then.

Being mildly conspiracy theory minded....I'm curious as to what we're not supposed to be focusing on, with this being thrown in our face?

While normally I'm all for the Wag the Dog conspiracy ... I think this one is really just about the shutdown. It was political grandstanding at it's worst, with Congressmen holding the country hostage almost solely because they wanted to defund Planned Parenthood.

Ironic too how the last Furlough was when Clinton was in office. Now another potential Furlough and oooo what have we here? why another Democratic President.

The United States federal government shutdown of 1995 and 1996 was the result of a conflict between Democratic President Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress over funding for Medicare, education, the environment and public health.
