Activision threatens subs fees for Call of Duty

Found this article on at this URL: http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/p...lanned/1389161, but have cut/pasted the prominent part of it. Reading the last sentence makes me wonder if they're going to try come up with a CODMW adaptation of MAG:

In a recent conference call with investors, Activision Blizzard revealed a new Call of Duty, announced that a subscription for the series is in the works, and hinted that they might not release as many big, plastic peripherals this year.

According to Ars Technica, Call of Duty 7 will renew Activision Blizzard's annual assault on holiday sales charts in 2010. This isn't a huge surprise - the company has released a new Call of Duty game every single year for the past five years. However, they've never released a Call of Duty with a subscription plan, and that may change soon. During the conference call, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, "If you think about the success we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise."

That's right, Activision Blizzard is pondering a Calling Plan of Duty, though you probably won't see one in this year's game. That's because it's in development at traditionally conservative Treyarch Studios, not Infinity Ward, which made last year's best-selling game. Furthermore, Destructoid quotes a source which claims that Infinity Ward is hard at work on a Call of Duty massively-multiplayer online game, which certainly fits the profile of a subscription-based title.

Indecision may or may not be my problem.

Re: Activision threatens subs fees for Call of Duty

I currently have little interest in what Treyarch is workin on, all the COD games they made that i have played so far sucked (WaW, COD3). I am curious as to what Infinity Ward is working on though, as i much preferred their games that i played (COD2, MW, MW2). I don't like the idea of paying monthly fees to play a game i already paid $65.84 for (the sales tax is up to 9.75% in my area)

I liked the Treyarch ran COD's (no homo) better than Infinity Ward. COD3 and WAW I'm able to get decent kills, but the others, there's just something about them that isn't right.
I'm with Max on this. The monthly fee would be a bit much after paying for the game and paying for Xbox Live.

I liked all COD's MW and WaW. I thought these games were great. Just don't know if I would want to spend more money to play a game monthly. That is one thing that I love about the PS3 right now. Granted it is not a lot to play online with the 360 I just don't want to pay it. We pay enough for the console the controllers and the games. If this game does do this. I think there will be more games to follow which would really irritate me.

The Treyarch games where good, but nowhere near the level of the IW releases. I would be very interested if this project was in the hands of IW. But I would like to see it on the PS3, with the lack of subscription fee's to play online.

as far as i'm concerned... if they think anybody is going to pay a sub fee, on top of the 65.00 price tag. they are bat shit crazy, they can take their collective selves and go screw a multitude of broom handles. that just doesn't fly in my book, infinity can go do the same if that's where they're taking it also.

i'm surfacing a pretty ancient thread here but this little tid bit sort of applies.

    from Robert Bowling on twitter:

I haven't played much of this anyway, but it seems like there are plenty of people playing the non-dlc maps. It probably will be just the kids playing if it becomes subscription. My initial payment of $59.99 will be all they get from me.

    Post Call of Duty Elite

This just came FourZeroTwo's Twitter feed about 12 minutes ago:

    fourzerotwo Robert Bowling

COD ELITE is free, for all players, some paid aspects TBD. Absolutely NO fee to play #MW3 multiplayer. Detailed reveal coming tomorrow AM.
Be watching in the A.M. for updates.

Indecision may or may not be my problem.

There seems to be a bit of confusion so far with this Elite thing because while Bowling is reporting it a free service with paid extras (and I trust his word over the news sites), other gaming news sites, such as Kotaku and 1up, are simply saying it's going to be a paid service as in, pay to access at all. I imagine they will be updating their jumped gun articles to reflect Bowlings statement shortly

I guess tomorrow we'll find out more and hopefully clear everything up

the video is pretty funny and very informative. So far this CoD Elite business is looking very content rich and FINALLY it sounds like they are trying to implement a more in-depth clan system. It would be nice if they made it to where when you formed a clan via the elite service your chosen tag was reserved in-game much like the 3arc tag is reserved. That way any old joe couldn't just slap on your clan's tags on a whim at the beginning of a match

damn, they took the video down already. We'll probably see it released again tomorrow then and i'll re-link it to the authorized version. In the meantime, i updated to put up another copy that hasn't been taken down yet

btw, does that voice sound familiar? kind of reminds me of Jonah Hill...
