    Upgrade PS3 for noobs

Sony is coming out with a service to upgrade any PS3 model to a 250gig hard drive so you don't have to. They upgrade and transfer all your files and settings over and since it is Sony doing it, i bet they have an easy way of transferring those copy protected saves too, then they send it back to you and give you back the old hard drive too. The article i read only mentioned the price as 18,000 yen but converted over to US dollars that should be almost $200. Not sure how much the price would change over here but it really comes down to if you want to do it yourself and save money, or fork out some cash and have Sony do all the work and have it guaranteed

    Re: Upgrade PS3 for noobs

I read that today too and all I have to say is just WOW. I upgraded my HDD to a 500GB one and it cost me $65 and 15 minutes time tops for installing, formatting, and installing backed up data from old drive.

BTW Max copy protected files can be transferred to the new HDD from your backup files on an external as long as it is for the same PS3 because it is coded for that PS3 only. It will not work on a different PS3 that's what happened to me. When I put the 500GB in my fat everything transferred from my external backup on to it but when that PS3 died and I got the 250GB slim it would not transfer the copy protected data because it was a different PS3. I would like to get back my data for Demon's Souls and finish that game but it looks to never happen. I wish they would make it PSN account copy protected that way if your PS3 died you could transfer your data to that account only on your new PS3.

    Re: Upgrade PS3 for noobs

oh ok, see i haven't had to restore my backup file or transfer it to a new HDD on the same system so i wasn't sure if it even copied on to the external source at all.

Either way, i would be much more willing to do it on my own and save a bit of money but it is understandable why someone might be intimidated and want a professional to do it. It's not like you can just walk in to best buy and say "i want a 250gig hard drive please" lol, there's a little more to it than that, like getting the right type and size so it will fit in the PS3, then, even though it isn't much, you have to turn screws and remove pieces, something some people out there are not comfortable with.

i give you an extra 11% for trying Sony
