EA now has exclusive Star Wars video game rights

That's right, twitter is currently exploding with the news, EA has signed a multi-year exclusive deal for Star Wars video games. You can read the official statement over on the EA website but here is the important stuff:

Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.

so EA is going to do PC and console games while Disney focuses on mobile games

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

so yeah, DICE is now on board to make Star Wars games. Battlefront III may finally see the light of day? They say all the new games are going to be original but I hope that doesn't mean scrapping all works in progress as well

With EA's deep pockets they should be able to turn out some pretty decent games...now for the million dollar question...how much will Disney have in the final say of the game...would hate to see the Disneyfy every game

Why would they? Its not like they disneyfied Marvel. The worst I'd expect is no sex scene in the next Bioware offering that had a Star Wars title.

so yeah, DICE is now on board to make Star Wars games. Battlefront III may finally see the light of day? They say all the new games are going to be original but I hope that doesn't mean scrapping all works in progress as well

I think this green lights something like 1313, but puts Battlefront 3 on the backburner.

Digging in to the rumor mill though, would suggest that EA is interested in forming a second DICE studio, with some devs who have a history with DICE, who's game was shut down. EA is desperate for a bienniel heavy hitter to offset Battlefield.

i hope this means that 1313 will be resurrected, game looks frickin sweet and an awesome new (maybe, havent read any of the books) take on the starwars universe, the side we never really get to see.
