Why not use Apache OpenOffice? I think they've got a build for Mac if I'm not mistaken.

Please do not contact me for recruiting issues or to add or create you a signature. I will ignore you.

There are old versions floating around, but LibreOffice mostly has replaced OpenOffice IIRC. Just a rename.
If formatting (pictures/fancy type) is important, Google docs will work better BUT you need internet connection to edit. LibreOffice/OpenOffice is fine for basic formatting and is a desktop program.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice are two different office suites. Both are descendants of OpenOffice.org Libre has since become the default office package in most Linux distros, but Apache is making a comeback with OpenOffice.
Libre can save in docx format, so this may be your best choice for a legit free program.

I have used Libre and it works very well, I would recommend it.

I'm using Libre as well, went to that when the Win7->8 upgrade failed in the middle and forced a clean install. I didn't have the key stored anywhere else and M$ refused to help, even though the botched upgrade of their own software is what caused the problem.... Anyway, Libre has been able to do everything I've needed to and, like mentioned above, is compatible with the Microsoft file formats.

If the company that you work for, has your email hosted on office 365. Most user licenses come with a desktop install of the office suite, both 2010 and 2013. But if not, go with a combonation of Google Docs and LibreOffice.
