For those of you who are curious and don't know, you can test both your internet connection speed and line quality.
Speedtest is here: http://www.speedtest.net/
And Pingtest here: http://www.pingtest.net/

I pinged Sea, Wa. It's better if I ping Anchorage obviously but no one hosts games. I usually connect to Sea or SF for gaming hosts.

Has anyone switched from cable to FIOS? and if you did was the speed better?
I have uVerse, which is AT&T's iteration of Fiber. and YES, it is leaps-and-bounds better then cable.

How much does it cost your internet download speed is insane!
I'm actually lying, cause I'm at the office. here we have a DS3 circuit. :)
At home I have 18MB Down and 3MB up. which is also upgradable to 24MB down, 5MB up.

you could start your own small business and get a business line put in at your house. I will start my own small web farm, and hope to make enough net profit to cover the business line.
It would be cheaper to rent a rack somewhere. HVAC, and Electrical is where the biggest $$ are.
I've thought about it, but I just don't have the time or will power to do it solo. Now if I had a couple partners.. that would be different. HELL, I might even open my own data center. But in that case, you'd need some financial backing to get started.

This is what I say to ATT DSL. http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae127/dbgusmc/dancing-man-2.gif
Here is what my phone is putting out. Today I signed up for comcast 6-12mb package to install monday!! Then I will cancel my phone crap... :D http://www.speedtest.net/result/1082840749.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
Here is my speed from home. I have the 12mb package, so this is almost spot on.

I have really enjoyed my uVerse. I've had it for almost a year, and I have to admit, the service is top notch. I always had problems with Comcrap. where my service was craptastic!
Here are a couple of my posts pertaining to uverse, and the experience I had with installation, service and features. There are several nested posts within these links, so you can follow the threads from these 2.

yeah when we moved to oxford i looked all around and miss matched packages but ended up with dish network for tv and then pay comcast for broadband....best for the bang for the buck ..and since ive been a loyal sprint customer for over 12 years i dont want to change my cells..so ATT was low on the list from the start!

I kinda do the same thing, except I run DirecTV and Comcast internet. I used to be a loyal sprint customer, but their reception sucks outside of the standard zones, so we switched to Verizon. Haven't had problems since.

I have always heard that downloading is for what you need for gaming, that and ping. Uploading is what your uploading to the web like pictures to facebook or whatever...
MaximusR3

well from my understanding, the d/l speed is going to make sure the game is not lagging for you, and the u/l speed is going to determine if you appear to be lagging to others, since the uploaded portion of it is going to be your movements and such that you are sending out to the game servers. I could be completely wrong though, i'm just making educated guesses based off of basic logic :D
and lady, your current d/l speed isn't too terrible, i have been using a connection that's only at about 1.5 and i still manage ok and don't experience much lag. the upload speed is about the same as yours though and i'm not a fan of it lol
as an added note to the u/l speed determining if you lag to others, this is why lag switches are connected to the upload only, so that you may turn your upload feed off completely and you are not sending the information on your movements so when you turn it back on and now everyone sees you in the position you are in, it was not a fluid movement that they could see, it's like you teleported there.

check out this blazing speed i'm working with at my dad's house
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1156489769.png
currently trying to convince him to switch to at&t DSL since that is the only other option available out here, and the DSL service is even a recent developement, it used to be either dial-up or satellite out here so even though at&t dsl is not great either, at least it's better than this wild blue nonsense and at 1/3 the price
Sounds like a no brainer to me. More speed, less price..
I think AT&T also offers an incentive to switch too, may be something to ask about, they might also have different offers available other then what they just have on their website... :)

I cant test mine properly. I have dsl at my 2 apartments. but my office where I sometimes game at nights is two ISP's both rated for 20 meg down and 5 meg up each. I get another 40 on one of them by summer. Being the IT guy I get to let my gaming traffic thru the firewall. each time I test I get one or the other.
