Skyrim‘s executive producer has revealed that the team is already thinking of ways to bring PC-built mods to home consoles.

PC gamers have demonstrated what kind of inspired content can be generated by the fans themselves, and Bethesda seems tired of leaving console gamers out of the action.

“It works on all the consoles. As far as the 360 and PS3, right now there’s not an avenue for us to make that available, but we’d very much like to find a way. We have talked to Microsoft and Sony, and so there’s a chance it might happen one day, [but] I don’t see it happening for release.

“We’d like to see it happen, because it works, it’s how we made the game. I think it’s something really cool about what we do, but 90 per cent of our audience is on the consoles, so 90 per cent of our audience can’t even see this thing. So if we can solve that we’d like to.”

if fighting dragons is your cup of tea, the latest game details from Skyrim‘s director Todd Howard should make your day. While other games may only give players a handful of dragons to slay, Skyrim will be offering a completely limitless population of the winged creatures to show who’s boss.

While director Todd Howard has been somewhat cagey in the past when asked outright how many dragons would be populating the landscapes of Skyrim, this time he put the questions to rest:

“No, there is an unlimited number of dragons. One of our designers actually put in a random event I encountered, where I ended up being chased by three dragons and I thought “who the hell did this?” I felt like Frodo in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and was really frightened. So I asked him to remove it. But no, dragons are generated automatically (in addition to that there are a number of specific encounters, of course).”

Howard wasn’t ready to let all the mysteries surrounding dragons die, still keeping quiet on the possibility of dragon mounts being available in Skyrim:
“Have we considered it? Yes. Do we allow it right now? No. But we can decide to support it at some point.”

While some developers have been jumping upon the Wii U bandwagon after considering the gameplay possibilities available with the platform’s new controller, developer Bethesda Softworks is more concerned with the processing power, and as such, is still on the fence about supporting the console.

Known for creating titles that push PCs and home consoles to their max (and occasionally suffer because of it), Bethesda wants to ensure that the Wii U is strong enough to at least rival the current generation power of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Bethesda’s upcoming The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the most highly-anticipated titles of the upcoming holiday season. Despite the likelihood that Modern Warfare 3 will once again break industry sales records and invade countless homes across the country, it may actually be Skyrim that has the most energized and excited following – leading in to the title’s November 11 release.

Bethesda has periodically chummed the waters with fan-pleasing promises such as an “unlimited” number of dragons as well as tantalizing pre-order bonuses. Now, the developer is looking beyond the game’s actual release – and promising to serve-up robust, crowd-pleasing, DLC content that, while less frequent, will be more substantial

Anyone who has been paying attention to the details surrounding The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim knows that when a game is as massive in size and scope as Bethesda’s next title, there is just too much information to truly grasp before playing it for yourself. Even so, a few questions have continued to nag at the minds of many fans, and thanks to a recent interview released by Bethesda we have a few more concrete details about the various mechanics and design choices the team has in store with Skyrim.

When it comes to console gaming and most especially, within the RPG genre, long-time gamers often dread hearing the words “more accessible” and “wider audience.” What that typically means, is that a publisher comes down on a developer to force the oversimplification of certain games, games whose predecessors offered more depth. We saw this with BioWare recently on their two big franchises: Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2.

Needless to say, with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim introducing such a large array of changes to the HUD, leveling mechanic and other gameplay features – and knowing Oblivion removed some cool stuff from Morrowind before it – some long time Elder Scrolls fans are a tad concerned. But need not worry, fellow mages, rogues and warriors! For Skyrim will not do such a thing.

Edit: An addition on the story here:

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/08/05/woman-goes-into-labor-during-skyrim-presentation.aspx

Gameinformer.com

The father-to-be has contacted Game Informer with more QuakeCon-related details of how he and his fiancée ended up in a Skyrim demo while she went into labor.

The lovestruck gamers got engaged last year at QuakeCon 2010, after Chaz proposed to Stevi onstage at the very end of the show. She said yes, and the two planned on getting married at this year's QuakeCon, which is going on right now. Stevi went into labor during the half hour long Skyrim demo, so obviously those plans were canned.

"During the demo Todd Howard showed off the Frost Dragon. This is what started the whole thing, seeing this must have filled Stevi with so much excitement that it sent her into labor," explains Chaz.

You might be asking yourself why the couple didn't bolt for the hospital at the first sign of labor, but Chaz says they initially thought it could have been false labor. So they waited it out to see if the contractions continued, which they did. Chaz says they "...stayed for the rest of the demo because she is a trooper and LOVES Skyrim."

Original Story:Will the first of the Dragonborn be crawling among us soon? Will we soon hear tiny dragon shouts squealing from a hospital delivery room? It's possible, because a pair of engaged diehard gamers sat through the entirety of a QuakeCon 2011 presentation for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as the pregnant woman went into labor.

Game Informer's Andrew Reiner was approached by the couple while waiting to take part in the Games That Inspired Us panel at QuakeCon 2011. He reports that the two are self-proclaimed Game Informer fans, and wanted to let him know they weren't going to miss that demo for anything.

Did the soothing cadence of Todd Howard's voice coax the new life into entering the world? Maybe the fantastical action and grand expanses of Skyrim excited the mother-to-be so much that it created a physiological chain reaction. Or perhaps the crowd's roaring energy and enthusiasm convinced this youngster that it needed to be born before November 11, 2011.

Whatever the case, we at Game Informer tip our hats to Chaz and Stevi's dedication. Not even impending birth could keep the couple from missing out on an exclusive glimpse into the world of Tamriel. The duo (soon to be trio) is currently en route to a hospital, and we wish them the best of luck in delivering their little girl, Atari Lynn. Yep. Atari. We couldn't make this stuff up.

Bethesda, if you're reading: We don't think a complimentary copy of the Skyrim Collector's Edition would be out of line.

I'm thinking they will get it as a gift. :D

It’s odd to consider that it’s been the better part of a decade since the initial release of Valve’s digital distribution network, Steam. Over the years, the service has become ubiquitous for PC gaming, both for direct distribution of titles and for management of online communities.

In 2008, Valve launched the Steamworks developer package—a suite of tools designed to closely integrate games with Steam and its attendant services. While many developers have taken advantage of Steamworks for individual tools (such as voice-chat and anti-cheating measures), it looks like its highest profile user will roll out in November. Bethesda Game Studios has announced that the eagerly awaited The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will feature many of Steamworks’ creative tools.

[Update: Notch speaks about game choice and how serious he is about going to court. Bethesda offers no comment.]

In what may be a case of nonsensical decision making, bad PR, or both, the lawyers behind Bethesda sent a letter to Minecraft creator Markus Persson claiming that his company’s next game, Scrolls, “infringes on their trademark and everyone will confuse it with Skyrim.”

We’re certainly not confused and don’t expect any gamers to be either since no one refers to Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim as “The Elder Scrolls #” but that’s the predicament Notch found himself in days before his wedding. Returning from his weekend tying the knot with a happy mindset, Notch just proposed the ultimate solution to this legal matter: a fight to the death! Well, a digital death.

Bethesda’s upcoming game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, has been one of the most anticipated games of 2011 for quite a while now. The Elder Scrolls series has enjoyed a long and storied history and is responsible for pushing the expectation of what is possible in open-world role-playing games.

Both Morrowind and Oblivion were very well received, but Skyrim has garnered more attention than any game in the series thus far. In anticipation of Skyrim’s release, we have scoured the Internet and collected all of the available screenshots of the game’s playable races.

Veteran fans of The Elder Scrolls series should be very familiar with the third installment in the series, Morrowind. The game, taking its name from the province of Tamriel it is based in, is the home of the Dunmer, or the “Dark Elves” as they are also known as. In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the Dark Elves will of course return, but will be a less common sight due to this installment in the franchise taking place in the northern-most province of Skyrim, home of the Nords, a far cry in climate from the volcanic regions of the neighboring landing of Morrowind.

While previous screenshots presented fans with a good look at the Orcs and Khajiit of Skyrim, it wasn’t until this week that Bethesda released the very first image of what the updated Dunmer look like in Skyrim so read on for your first look.

If you’re a web surfing veteran so to speak, someone who keeps up with the latest internet memes, trends and parodies, then you’re no doubt familiar with the onslaught of Chuck Norris jokes and associated merchandise that spread like wildfire a few years back. You know, the ones where Chuck Norris’ stare or finger-point can send women into labor or in some cases, even impregnate them. But did you know that Bethesda’s eagerly anticipated RPG, Skyrim, can do the same? We didn’t.

If someone were to take a look at the world of popular media these days, it wouldn’t take long to figure out just how imitative pop culture has become. We’ve given up on counting the number of games with ‘dungeon,’ ‘dragon,’ ‘quest’ or ‘age’ in the title, but it seems that there are still a few nouns that are off limits. At least, that’s according to Bethesda’s legal team. With The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim set to release this November, Minecraft developer Mojang has been informed that their upcoming collectible card game Scrolls is infringing on the company’s trademark. It turns out rolled up bits of paper can still be relevant in this digital age, after all.

Two days ago, the creator of Minecraft and headmaster of developer Mojang known as Notch, challenged Bethesda to a game of Quake 3 to settle a legal dispute over the name of his company’s next game. Yes, this actually happened and as you could imagine, everyone was excited at the possibility of watching a livestream of such a hilariously ludicrous, yet exciting event.

This all began two weeks ago when Notch (real name: Markus Persson) received a legal letter in the mail from Bethesda’s lawyers, claiming that his indie studio’s next game, titled Scrolls, infringes on the trademark of Bethesda’s flagship franchise, The Elder Scrolls. Since gamers generally refer to Elder Scrolls titles by their subtitle (i.e. Morrowing, Oblivion & Skyrim) and since “Scrolls” is just a noun, some critique the legal claim as being “bogus,” including Notch himself. His solution to challenge them to a round of Quake 3 over the name however, may not have been so bright in hindsight.

Straight from the Bethblog here's the release of the voice cast of Skyrim.

In a press release this morning, we’ve announced the star-studded voice over cast for Skyrim. Learn more below…

BETHESDA SOFTWORKS ANNOUNCES RENOWNED
VOICE OVER CAST FOR THE ELDER SCROLLS® V: SKYRIM™
Academy Award Nominees Christopher Plummer, Max Von Sydow and Joan Allen Come Together for the Year’s Most Anticipated Game

September 27, 2011 (Rockville, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today revealed the stage and screen legends lending their talents to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the next installment in the award-winning Elder Scrolls series. Skyrim will feature an ensemble cast of Academy Award nominees, including Christopher Plummer (“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” “The Insider”), Max Von Sydow (“The Exorcist,” “Minority Report”), and Joan Allen (“The Contender,” “The Bourne Ultimatum”).

Christopher Plummer, a two-time Emmy Award winner, two-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee, takes on the role of Arngeir, a powerful Greybeard elder. An order of philosopher monks who are masters of the Way of the Voice, the Greybeards live in silent isolation atop Skyrim’s largest mountain.

Academy Award nominee, Max Von Sydow, stars as Esbern, a chronicler and agent of the Blades who has survived in hiding. Long obsessed with the foretold return of the dragon Alduin, the World Eater, Esbern will teach you how to confront this epic evil.

Tony Award winner and three-time Academy Award nominee, Joan Allen, will be making her videogame debut as Delphine, one of the last remaining members of the Blades – an ancient warrior society once sworn to protect the Emperor. Like you, Delphine is trying to unravel the mystery of the dragons’ return.

In addition, iconic actress and singer, Lynda Carter (“Wonder Woman”), voices Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, one of the Nord heroes who overthrew the dragons in ancient times.

“It’s been incredible to have all these actors together,” said Todd Howard, Game Director. “When you start a project, you always make your wish-list of actors, and to actually hear them in the game, it’s amazing. We can’t wait for everyone to experience it.”

Skyrim’s cast also includes:

Michael Hogan (“Battlestar Galactica”), who plays Imperial General Tullius, in charge of crushing the Stormcloak rebellion.

Vladimir Kulich (“The 13th Warrior,” “Smoking Aces”) portrays Hogan’s nemesis Ulfric Stormcloak, Jarl of Windhelm and charismatic leader of the Stormcloaks, who aims to make Skyrim independent of the Empire.

Claudia Christian (“Babylon 5”) joins the cast as Legate Rikke, General Tullius’s chief lieutenant, a loyal Imperial officer as well as a Nord who firmly believes Skyrim must remain part of the Empire.

Diane Louise Salinger (“Carnivale”), Renee Victor (“Weeds”), and Saturday Night Live-alum George Coe (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”) round out the star-studded cast of more than 70 different voice actors delivering over 60,000 lines of dialogue.

A very nice post from Bethblog poster Sammuthegreat on character creation and perks. November can't get here soon enough. What character will you create then?

Right, my impressions. Thanks for being patient, I'm going as fast as I can!

I started the game, fiddled as quickly as possible with the character creator. The creator tells you (briefly) about each race's abilities, so without further ado:

- ORCS: Beserker
- REDGUARDS: Adrenaline Rush,
- WOOD ELF: resist poison, resisit disease, command animals
- NORD: Battlecry
- KHAJIIT: night-eye, claw attacks
- IMPERIAL: Voice of the Emperor, find more coins when looting
- HIGH ELF: regenerate Magicka more quickly
- DARK ELF: Ancestor's Wrath (surround self in fire), resist fire
- BRETON: Dragonskin (absorb spells), resist shock
- ARGONIANS: Histskin (regenerate health quickly), resist disease 50%, breathe underwater

Weight slider is quite cool - not a massive effect on women, turns them from skinny to "slender but not skinny". Men can get massively buff.

So I went into the game and ran immediately out of the starting cave (a demo-specific area I think, I couldn't go anywhere else). First thing I noticed was beautiful music. Better than Oblivion's in my view. I checked the "game stats" screen for any sign of werewolf-related stats, and found nothing - but I also found no mention of vampires either, so that's not proof. I then went straight to the perk trees, and got as many as possible in my brief time (shorter than promised, because of queues).

- FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS THAT RACES HAVE DIFFERENT STATS TO START WITH. The baseline stat seems to be 15, with +5 in some stats and even +10 in others. For example:
- Argonians start with 25 in Lockpicking, 20 in Pickpocketing, Sneak, Light Amour, Restoration, Alteration
- Orcs start with 25 in Heavy Armour, 20 in Enchanting, Smithing (didn't see any more)
- Bosmer start with 20s in most of the thieving skills - Sneak, Alchemy, Pickpocket, Lockpicking - and a 25 in Archery

Conjuration
- Novice for 50% magicka etc (up to Master)
- Dual casting overcharges --> greater spell effect

- Another couple - bad recording again

Enchanting
- Enchants are 20% stronger (ranked)
- Enchanted armor 25% stronger
- "Soul gems provide extra magicka for recharging" - again, dodgy recording but that's what I heard, even if it doesn't make much sense
- Death blows to creatures but not people trap souls for weapon recharge
- Health, magicka and stamina enchants stronger
- Extra effect on already-enchanted weapon can be applied
- Shock, Frost and Fire enchants 25% stronger (individual perks for each element) (probably ranked)

- Attacks with great-swords do extra critical damage (ranked)
- Power attacks cost 25% less stamina
- Standing power attacks do 25% bonus damage, chance to decapitate
- Sprinting power attacks do double (critical) damage
- Sideways power attacks hit all targets
- Backwards power attacks have 25% chance of paralysis

Archery
- Bows do 25% more damage
- Zoom in
- Zooming slows time
- 10% crit chance
- Move faster with drawn bow
- Recover twice as many arrows from dead bodies
- 50% chance of paralyzing for few seconds (might be 15%, can't really hear...)
- Draw bow 30% faster
- Another about arrows - can't hear

Sneak
- 20% harder to detect (ranked)
- Sneak attacks do 6x damage with 1h weapons
- Sneak attacks with bows do 3x damage
- Sneak attacks with daggers do 15x damage (end perk on skill tree)
- Noise from armor reduced 50%
- No longer activate pressure plates
- Sprinting while sneaking performs silent forward roll
- Running does not affect detection chance
- Crouching can make hostile enemies lose sight of you and search for a target

So, I actually got (most of) 12 skill trees, not 5 or 6 like I thought. Not bad! Sorry for the bad recording in places, it was very loud in the venue, I had headphones on so could barely hear myself.

Anyway, I'll upload more of my experiences tomorrow - my first playthrough ended there, because they had to give us less time to keep queues short. I only got about 13 minutes first time round. My second playthrough involved lots more actual gameplay, so look forward to that tomorrow. I need to go to bed now, I've got work in the morning and it's midnight over here!

P.S. I should add two things - firstly, there are a few perks that I saw but couldn't hear at all on my recording, so this isn't the FULL list for each skill. I only missed 2 or 3 though. Secondly, I simply didn't have time to check the perks in order, or which ones had ranks, or how many ranks, or what skill level was needed to unlock them. They're not in the proper order either - I really was in a rush. Hopefully you'll forgive me though :)

From G4tv.com and Kotaku we now can take a look at the map for Skyrim. Here's the article.

G4TV:

A great many of us are very excited to see what Bethesda Softworks has done with its fantasy game world in The Elder Scrolls 5. The latest sequel takes players to a new location in Tamriel, a mountainous, snowy region called Skyrim.

Guesses at the basic shape of the map exist thanks to pre-existing lore of Bethesda's world of Nim, but today brings our first look at the map that you'll see in the box when Skyrim arrives on November 11. You can see nine crests marking what are almost certainly cities with their own load screens.

The map was posted on ElderScrolls.net after it was handed out at the Russian gaming show Igromir (via Kotaku).

Kotaku:

Skyrim’s Map Leaked, Looks Massive [Update]

Reportedly obtained via Russian (where else) collector's edition copies of the game, here's what's likely your first look at the game world of the upcoming RPG blockbuster Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Scanned by members of a Russian fan forum, it shows a world that is surprisingly large; if you remember Oblivion's map, it used a hooked shape and large river to make it look bigger than it actually was (of course, even with this trick, it was still massive). Unless the interior mountains in this are utterly impassable, Skyrim's map is just, wham, here's a giant chunk of land, now have at it.

This translated version of the map may not be 100% what you get in the English version, as it's simply a translation of the Russian map (which may have been localised, and not just translated), but it's a good start. Note the nine major cities, each with their own distinctive coat of arms, and what look like smaller settlements scattered between them.

Because this map wasn't officially released by Bethesda, we've contacted the developer asking for confirmation of its authenticity. We'll update if we hear back.

UPDATE - Russian readers are letting us know the map was in fact handed out at the Igromir gaming show in Moscow, meaning it's not leaked at all!

Skyrim will be out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 11.

And the link and pic below.

I'm always curious to see how open world games handle boundaries in-game. making it an island is a bit of a no brainer approach and in games that are more modern, making tall buildings you can't pass through seems to do the trick. impassable mountain ranges is another traditional approach I think, as is large chasms ala borderlands style.

from the looks of it Skyrim will use the ocean method for the northern border and I'll take a guess that mountains are going to be the common fence for the other borders?

From the look of it there may be one stretch of the game world where an ocean or mountain won't be used as a boundary. So we may "see" one area of invisible boundary in Skyrim. But I'm betting on more than that truthfully.

ah i see, you mean the section on the south western border between what looks like a ram's head symbol and an owl symbol?

interested in seeing how they tackle this, since these days invisible walls are so frowned upon that they'd have a hard time getting away with such a cheap move. maybe they will take the impassable chasm approach? or maybe a very dense, impassable forest area?

Considering that Hammerfell is mostly rocky terrain and desert I can see an area of impassable rocky terrain placed there. I see myself falling into the chasm one to many times for that to be a good idea. lol

A good article from IGN.com that gives some good reasons why we wont see much daylight for a while once Skyrim comes out.

Five Reasons Skyrim is Going to Make You its Bitch
Say goodbye to your spare time come November.
Australia, July 17, 2011

Skyrim is like the John Romero of RPGs: it's going to make you its bitch. Even though 2011's end of year release schedule is as over-encumbered with AAA titles as any holiday season before it – what with the likes of Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, and the twin towers of Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 all ready to grab your spare time by the balls and squeeze – Skyrim has the size and scope to banish the other big names on your shopping list to a state of shrink-wrapped suspended animation well into the new year. It might be January before you take any other game off the shelf, as you'll be too busy slaying dragons in Bethesda's latest epic.

We sat down with Skyrim's Lead Producer Craig Lafferty, who detailed five reasons why The Elder Scrolls V is going to make you forget about the concept of fresh air.

1. The story is yours to dictate

The open-ended nature of the Elder Scrolls series has been somewhat of a double-edged sword in the past. While the lack of hand-holding and clear story objectives in Morrowind – and to a slightly lesser extent Oblivion – brought a sense of liberation to some, it also spelled intimidation to others who struggled for a sense of purpose without obvious checkpoint markers dragging them through the narrative. It's something that Bethesda is certainly aware of, but the developer is only making some slight tweaks to its open-ended formula.

"I don't know if we're concerned about it," says lead producer Craig Lafferty. "We'd certainly like for people to be able to finish the games. We've gotten better at sort of guiding the player along – almost like the carrot on the stick – guiding them towards how to finish the main quest. But really we make these huge open world games so you can go where you want, be what you want, play what you want, so if you don't ever finish [the main quest] but you're still having a great time then that's fine too. We've heard stories of players playing 200-300 hours of our previous games without ever finishing the core narrative."

At least 100 of those hours will be spent staring enigmatically into the distance.

One of these 'carrots on the stick' is the new Clairvoyance spell that draws a path along the ground to your next objective. Another nice feature of the game is the dynamic class system, which essentially means your character will level up and evolve in an organic manner depending on your actions – so you can just pursue the things that you're interested in and your character will automatically mold to your style, eliminating the need to get bogged down spending stat points.

2. There's an insane amount of things to do and see

One of the best aspects of Oblivion was its abundance of water-cooler moments – because there was so much to see and do off the beaten path, there was always plenty to talk about with friends who were playing the same game at the same time but in an entirely different way. Like that time you became a vampire, or when your friend happened upon a body floating in a stream with a suicide note tucked into his pocket. Then there was that quest – 'A Brush With Death' - that transported you into a painting in search of a missing artist. It was a watercolor water-cooler moment!

"There's definitely lots more stuff like that," says Lafferty. "We don't want to give anything specific away to spoil it, but we've got a big open world to go anywhere and do whatever you want, on top of the main quest which is about 30 hours long. We still have the guilds – so the mage's guild, the thieves' guild, the fighters' guild, those are back. The mage's guild takes place in the College of Winterhold. So we have that as well as 150 handcrafted dungeons, and probably over 500 individual activities to do in the world so there's a lot of that as well as the main focus of the story."

3. The dragons are never-ending

Dragons are the big bosses of Skyrim and the battles with them appear to be suitably intense – at least if the climactic encounter in the game's E3 demo is anything to go by. You can use magic to summon electrical storms to combat them in the air, and when you inflict enough damage upon them they'll crash to the ground with all the heft of a mythical jumbo jet – carving out deep grooves in the earth and churning up dust and topsoil as their hulking bodies grind to a halt. Then once they're dead, you consume their souls and inherit their power. But the dragons will always come back.

"They're not limited, they're like any other creature in the game, they're not scripted – you can come across them as you play through the world but they don't go away," explains Lafferty. "It's not like you can defeat all of the dragons and they'll cease to exist – they'll always be there in the game. And they're also a central focus to the story – it's the first Elder Scrolls game with dragons - and you're dragon born, you can speak the language of the dragon. So it's just trying to figure out why the dragons are back, why they're special and how does that play out in the world?"

4. Dragons won't necessarily all be your enemy

Are all of the dragons in the mythical land of Skyrim evil, or will you be able to tame them for the purposes of fighting alongside you? Bethesda is keeping tight-lipped on the subject for now.

"We're not really getting into a whole lot of specifics about that," says Lafferty. "But they're not all out to kill you, let's just put it that way."

Thus we're willing to bet that there will be friendly fire-breathers to summon using one of your 'dragon shouts' – calling on a friendly dragon to fight an enemy dragon would be the definition of fighting fire with fire. Plus the game's mountains look like they'd take an absolute dragon age to ascend on foot or horseback, but on the back of a saddled dragon it could be a short flight to the summit. It's probably unlikely, but mountable dragons as DLC would definitely have us opening our virtual wallets post-release. How about it, Bethesda?

We wonder what the view is like from up there?

5. The world of Skyrim sure beats your boring real life

The map of Skyrim is said to be roughly the same size as Cyrodiil in Oblivion, but thanks to a complete overhaul of the game engine since then Skyrim is infinitely more detailed and lush in appearance, with an incredible draw distance that doesn't just extend out into the horizon but upward to the peaks of the towering mountains that loom large over the landscape.

"We made Oblivion and then Fallout 3 on the current gen of consoles, so we've learned a lot more about how to bring a lot out of the current systems," says Lafferty. "So now we have a new UI system, a new animation system, a new renderer, the radiant story and then the world itself, so all these things kind of combine and as a result the world of Skyrim really feels like a solid place you can get lost in."

Just how much is there to do and see in Skyrim? With 280 perks to unlock, five major cities to explore, over 300 books to find, 150 unique dungeons to loot and some 500 individual activities to indulge in, it would truly appear that the sky is the limit.

The author of this article either knows how to have fun or is just a bit disturbed. Either way here's a good 3 part article from OXMUK. And further below are the system requirements for playing on PC.

Part 1: Argonian warrior Toxic sets the Nord realm alight

Facing the new Elder Scrolls game for the first time, Dragonborn-strength double espresso in hand, I was in a quandary. There have been gazillions of Skyrim previews over the past few months, but most begin from the same place: a chilly Cavern of Character Creation located high on the slopes above entry-level village Riverwood, snow whisking merrily on the breeze, the distant upturned ribcage of the Barrow Hills Temple visible across the valley.

Not all playthroughs have panned out the same way, of course. Elder Scrolls is famous for that. For every journalist who's taken the obvious route, descending to Riverwood, there's another journalist who's turned his or her face firmly to the horizon and (usually) an untimely death at the hands of a cave troll. Some players have discovered unique and fascinating temples like Embershard Mine, as detailed in the massive preview you'll read in issue 78. Others have got stuck up mountains. But there's only so far you can travel on foot in Skyrim without getting bogged down, and as a consequence, common threads have emerged.

How to make my own hands-on stand out? Simple. Firstly, I would wantonly abuse the game's fast-travel systems. Secondly, I would be a complete bastard. Counting on the fact that the average games journalist is, once you get a few drinks in him/her, a likeable sort and not overly disposed to incinerate passing badgers, I would become the ethical equivalent of a coach toilet - a consummate testicle, a filthy disgrace, the sort of character you'd tar and feather on sight - and hopefully, discover something nobody else had discovered in the process.

Skyrim's ending begins

As it transpired, this was disturbingly easy. Seeking to strike terror into the hearts of Riverwood's pinkish bipeds, who've had quite enough bother from oversized lizards already, I made my Skyrim character an Argonian with swept-back horns, gruesome drippy eyepaint, snake's eyes and low, spiky brows. Think Rango meets Slipknot. I'd have liked fire breath, fangs that extend below my chin and the Omega symbol in one pupil, but Bethesda has no truck with such Fable-esque touches. Ah well. My actions would have to make up for it.

And so, the tale of the Argonian warrior Toxic, foe to all that is friendly, erupted. I left the cave, set off into the forests with an echoing roar, fell down a waterfall and died. The water in this game looks terrific, by the way - multiple layers of froth and foam collapsing together like sheathes of lace-edged paper, spilling between planes of rock. Reborn and undeterred, I followed the path instead.

Not far down it I met a hunter and his dog. The man approached, raising his hand in greeting, so I set him on fire. The dog didn't take this too well, so I set him on fire too. Destruction magic, I had decided, would be my calling card in the realm of the Nords. That and a dirty great battleaxe. On the way to Riverwood I discovered a beehive in a tree, which I ate, and a herd of deer, which I fired arrows at till their mournful cries reverberated from distant peaks. Time for a drawn-out muhahahaha? Soon, my precious. Soon.

Riverwood itself is quite an eventful place - again, see Log's preview in OXM 78 for details of quests and conversations - but Toxic is an impetuous beast, with no patience for the feeble machinations of a few witless villagers. So I tried to torch it to the ground instead, beginning by burning the letter "T" into a thatched rooftop as a sign of my Coming. Sadly, this game doesn't seem to have a propagating fire system. No matter.

Entering the house in question, I approached a sleeping woman and hacked her in the face. She got out of bed and tried to stab me, so I hacked her in the face again, then she tried to surrender, so I hacked her in the face again. The disturbance roused a man upstairs, but in his hurry to get up he glitched himself onto a cupboard. Easy prey. His face being out of hacking distance, I chopped his legs off instead. Figuratively. No dismemberment in this game either.

Outside, there were upset people. But what is the tetchiness of hairless apes when set against the inexplicable blood-thirst of a small female dinosaur? Sizzling with wrongness, I set fire to a small child. She fled in tears, but alas, no harm was incurred. Bethesda has decreed that no child-murdering shall occur in Skyrim, which is exactly the sort of stupid decision you'd expect a publisher that doesn't want to be associated with child-murdering to make. I chased the girl into a nearby river, rejoicing in her confusion, and suddenly, the air filled with arrows. The villagers had marshalled themselves. Time to get busy.

I'd been generously equipped with several weapons and a full set of armour, so my pesky assailants represented little threat. Combat in Skyrim isn't quite up to the precision of, for instance, Dark Souls, but feels a lot more coherent and exacting than that of Oblivion. The basics are simple: light attacks are quick, heavy attacks have a chance of inflicting knockback, and stamina rules all. You can also break guards with your shield, lashing out while raising it (a combination of left trigger and right trigger).

After running down a number of bowmen, Toxic spent a solid few minutes trading blows with a mystifyingly unkillable man named Rolof. Every time I sliced him up he'd go into lockdown for a while, then rise to his feet with renewed vigour. What sorcery was here! Fortunately, Skyrim's lead artist chose this moment to explain that some NPCs have been rendered indestructible for the sake of preserving key plot threads. Further evidence of the publisher's revolting goodliness. I bridled, but bowed to the inevitable, fleeing the village with my tail between my legs. As genitals to wanton boys are we to the gaming gods - they play with us for their sport.

Onward to Whiterun
With no shortcuts in evidence, I had no choice but to hot-foot it down the valley to the next, rather larger settlement, the suspiciously Rohan-ish tiered township of Whiterun. Here lies the ancestral seat of the Companions, shield-brothers and shield-sisters who fight for coin, I was informed by a gaggle of NPCs after they'd finished lecturing me because I hadn't helped them slay some stupid Giant.

I only hissed in reply, and would have axed the pack of them there and then, but a nearby guard had received word of Riverwood's devastation and landed a pre-emptive strike. We circled for a while, repeatedly missing and swearing. The Companion warriors clapped and cheered. Afterwards, I decided to forgo visiting Whiterun itself in favour of Skyrim's relatively undiscovered capital, Solitude, located far to the west - an hour or so's determined walk, no doubt, but an eye-blink away by rentable horse and cart.
Solitude looks as impressive as it sounds. It straddles a colossal stone arch above a craggy inlet, a misty assemblage of crenulations and turrets looming behind fearsome stone walls. Here was a true test of Toxic's toxicity, I mused to myself, kicking the limp body of a horse-and-cart driver off a cliff. The body's fall called my attention to the port below, property of the East Empire Company. A galleon lay in port, presumably replete with treasure, but wary of an impromptu sea voyage a la Oblivion's Bloated Float escapade I stuck to the high ground.

There was plenty to see and do. Stealthily infiltrating a trading outpost beyond Solitude's gates - stealthily, that is, if you discount the clanking of the chainmail I'd looted from the Whiterun guard - I stabbed a horse in the bottom. Nags being prized quantities in Solitude, this was more than enough to get the attention of a nearby regiment, camped beneath the gatehouse. Possibly due to the darkness, one of them had trouble finding Toxic despite her standing right in the middle of the path, cackling, astride a lamed, stolen horse.

The ensuing, epic battle lasted about 10 minutes, encompassing most major combat food groups including burny bits, stabby bits, slashy bits, backpedally bits, staggery bits, desperate strafe-behind-vegetationy bits and the occasional pause to guzzle 20 stolen wheels of cheese in one go for the sake of 33 per cent health replenishment. After one particularly testing brawl, I quaffed all the alcohol I'd looted and spent the next moment or so in a murderous stupor, flailing a steel Greatsword at hazy shapes in helmets. (Greatswords have some brutal cutaway execution cinematics, by the way, especially when you're drunk.) At some point in the proceedings I must have entered Solitude itself. I have these strange, unsettling memories of black-beamed houses wistfully touched by dawn light, low doorways and frightened faces, and archers - hundreds of bloody archers. Archers bloody everywhere.

Did Toxic triumph over the forces of rightfulness, niceness and not-wanting-to-die-arbitrarilyness? Or was she, as statistical likelihood and the truth of what actually happened suggests, repeatedly destroyed and eventually driven off into the hills by a bunch of men who helpfully lost interest about 30 seconds into the pursuit? Tune in tomorrow for the next, exciting part of our evil-most Skyrim hands-on...

I wonder if we'll see the return of "STOP CRIMINAL SCUM!".

Another big hand for Toxic, bane of the Common Walrus

I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's amazing what you can achieve by killing everybody. Bethesda would like us to believe that character development in the Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is dependent on doing quests - listening soberly while princes detail their problems, then tramping off to plumb the depths of some catacomb, save ravishing princesses from ravening dragons, etc, etc. Rubbish. All you need do to scale the game's Everest of perks and skills is throw fireballs at faces. Which faces, you ask? Don't be so bloody choosy.

Heed the example of Toxic, enemy to all that is pleasant and agreeable. When we left her she'd more or less cleaned out "Tutorial Town" Riverwood, started a punch-up on Whiterun's outskirts and waged an overnight war on Skyrim's capital Solitude, leaving dozens of guardsmen dead and several horseys with agonising bottoms. Save for a few fleeting exchanges, usually along the lines of "Halt in the name of the law AIEEEE", she'd steered clear of conversation with the realm's inhabitants, notable or otherwise. She'd been hacked to bits several times in the process, of course, but death in Skyrim is no biggie, thanks to regular auto-saving.

Skyrim perks: the wages of sin

And the pay-off? Several full suits of guard armour, including a nifty red shield with a white spiral design, a couple of steel maces, a bow and arrows, a wicked double-handed Greatsword, a horned helmet, a modest collection of Soul gems, magic rings and other trinkets, loads of cash, assorted foodstuffs, five pairs of soft velvet boots and enough alcohol to drown a sperm whale. I'd also levelled up a half-dozen times and made significant in-roads on the Two-Handed, Destruction and Heavy Armour perk trees.

It's said that all that's needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. Actually all that's required is for massacring the innocent to generate loads of XP. Building a great menu system helps too. Skyrim's interface is a beauty, swapping Oblivion's clunky pseudo-parchment vibe for something more redolent of a modern console dashboard, all dark glass backdrop and clam-shelled inventories. The perk system is a bit on the fussy side: it takes the form of a 3D star map, with constellations for each perk tree. Still, better some impromptu interfacial space opera than a heap of brown-scale tables and curly fonts.

So where were we? Ah yes, we were galloping away from Solitude with the garrison in pursuit. Damn those archers. And damn these pop-in guardsmen reinforcements too, cluttering up the nice tidy path with their soon-to-be corpses. The capital's defenders having given up the chase, there was time to dismount and show their insolent wandering comrades the business end of a charging Greatsword execution. Following said Greatsword execution, there was also time to giggle hysterically till one of Bethesda's PR chaps asked me to stop.

I'd failed to gut Solitude, but Skyrim's other cities wouldn't get off so easily. I fast-travelled back to Whiterun, roughly the centre of the world map, and came face to face with the cart driver who'd carried me to Solitude in the first place. This was a little confusing, as I had this distinct memory of axing him in the groin and kicking him off a cliff, but Toxic was willing to let bygones be bygones for the sake of safe passage to Dawnstar, a bleak town on Skyrim's northern frontier.

We arrived in a blizzard, cantering out of the mountains towards a dismal loch. Dawnstar is truly a woebegone place, its low halls sunken among snowdrifts, overseen by thick shaggy pine trees. "This inclement weather is a boon," I remarked to the crumpled body of my driver, before kicking him off a cliff. "See how the powers of darkness shield all eyes against my arrival."

As it happened, the powers of darkness needn't have bothered. Word of my atrocities inland had yet to reach Dawnstar, and the lantern-bearing Skalds who patrolled its streets greeted my presence with barely a word. Some town elders were having an argument in front of a doorway. There was talk of insurrection, the right to bear arms and other stuff I won't spoil because I didn't get a chance to hear it all anyway because Toxic went postal with fireballs. Unfortunately, all three speakers turned out to be unkillable story-centric NPCs.

The struggle for Dawnstar

After a couple of glorious defeats, one after a fierce battle with a man named Harik Halfhand aboard a skeletal trade ship, Toxic reasoned that cutting off Dawnstar's mineral resources might be a more effective way of sealing its fate. Admittedly that's an explanation I've just invented to explain why I walked into a random mineshaft, but then, explanations are very much like miners: easily buried. After cautiously ascertaining that all the lost souls toiling in the pit below had generic-sounding names, I slaughtered the man Jack of 'em. A Viking ran in halfway through to have a conversation with my warhammer about where best to fall over bleeding from a crumpled skull. Good times.

Toxic's malice knew no bounds - but as so often happens when evil reaches its apex, the disease that is goodness mounted a surprise resurgence. Sure, I thought - I could fast-travel back to Whiterun and onward to another unsuspecting settlement. I could try to reverse-pickpocket Harik Halfhand, leaving poisoned elk meat in his trousers. But there are some interesting silhouettes on that horizon there. The suggestion of architecture through the mist. A tumble of objects on wintry shores. Islets. I'd ridden roughshod over all that is wholesome for a solid hour. I could afford to take a few moments away from the wheel.

That's how Skyrim defeats us, fellow evil-doers. The road to hell is wide and well-paved, but you can't help wondering what lurks off in the undergrowth. In this case, it turned out to be walruses. Here's the thing about walruses: they don't like it when lizard-women in plate armour walk out of lakes with their forearms sheathed in flame. Gets them proper jumpy, which is quite amusing when large numbers of them do it once. They also sound a bit like Halo Elites. "Wort wort wort", etc. I seem to have written a whole paragraph about walruses.

As an Argonian, Toxic is perfectly at home in the water. I snapped up a few salmon as I cruised through the chilly, murky depths, descrying what appeared to be the undersides of icebergs far off in the distance. And there, a mile off, the unmistakeable outline of a beached ship. "The wreck of the Brinehammer", Skyrim's location tooltip declared as I pulled myself onto the rocks and stared up at the sloping deck, with its bony refuse and modest crab population. I'd discovered a secret area.

It was rubbish. From a looter's point of view, anyway. Below the withered boards of that godforsaken, long-crippled galleon, I discovered a few bits of cutlery, a couple of gemstones, some angry crabs whose invisible scuttling motions set my teeth on edge... and a diary belonging to one Topal the Pilot, the earliest known Aldmer explorer of Tamriel. What he wrote on those salt-stained pages may be of interest to the pioneers that follow, those patient enough not to drop the book immediately and get lost in a nearby forest.

Where next for Toxic and the most evil Skyrim hands-on ever? I'd love to tell you, but that would require staying up past my bedtime. Tune in tomorrow for news of fair Falkreath, Cracked Tusk Keep, the sunset land of Morthal... and Morkath, ancient home of the dwarves.

Sometimes the best-laid plans don't work out.

Toxic's final hour: Falkreath, Morthal and Morkath Side

There is a saying in Skyrim, of ancient and celebrated origin: "Who in their right mind would live in a country as sodding inhospitable as this one, with its desolate mountains, its treacherous forests, its miserable rain squalls and ball-cracking blizzards, and its bastard, bastard dragons, forever flapping down and eating honest folk just when you thought it was safe to go hoe the potatoes?"

There's another saying, of rather more recent origin: "Who the bloody hell's this reptile woman with horns? And why does she keep stabbing my horse up the bum?" Ah, Toxic. Your reign of terror was a memorable one indeed.

Even now - five long days and nights after the conclusion of my Skyrim hands-on - the Nord still whisper of the Argonian's baseless malice, her unquenchable bloodthirst. They speak, in tones thicker with dread than Horlicks is with delicious malty lumps, of The (Almost-)Torching of Riverwood. The Vexation of Solitude. The Torment of Dawnstar('s Walrus Population). But as Margaret Thatcher well knew, all mindless rampages have to end someday. Join me for the third, final and most tragic part of the vilest Skyrim hands-on ever.

Back to the borderlands

Toxic had striven mightily for the cause of evil, waylaying and torching wherever she went, but there remained much ground to cover: a mere four of Skyrim's main settlements had felt her rage. Accordingly, I left the wreck of the Brinehammer with a sense of urgency that had only a little do with the crabs snapping petulantly at my heels. Flipping open the map screen, I fast-travelled back to Whiterun, handed my by-now several-times-resurrected cart driver acquaintance another 20 gold, and set out across the lands to Falkreath.

I was expecting improved weather in Falkreath, located as it is on Skyrim's southern border with sunny Cyrodiil, staging ground for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. Nothing tropical, mind, just a bit of carefree blue sky. What I got was a moonless night and drizzle. The kind of drizzle that sets in just before you jump off an office block, clutching a life insurance policy. It dampened Toxic's spirits, so much so that when a passing guard sarkily asked her whether somebody had "stolen her sweetroll", she let him off with only a mild axing to the face. Fortunately, there were no witnesses to the deed, and my crime went unnoted in the region's invisible lawbooks. An opportunity to dig a little deeper than Toxic's impulsive guard-axing tendencies normally allowed? I embraced it with both arms.

Wandering the streets, a depressed villager. His daughter had been savagely killed the day before, and the madman responsible consigned to "The Pit", rambling of dark forces and necromancers or something. Here was a narrative setup, I ruminated, deserving of slightly more calculating wickedness. Accepting the quest tacked onto the end of the man's spiel, I resolved to locate the lunatic and free him to ply his murderous trade once more. Toxic would play puppet-master to this lost soul, looking on in spiteful glee while he put Falkreath's daughters to the stake.

That was the idea anyway, but on following the waypoint to a central building I could find only a roomful of dignitaries. An Elf lady pointed at a map and jabbered about her ancestry while a general of the Imperial Legion warned of escalating tensions between the Emperor and Skyrim's lords, the Jarls. Two courses of action presented themselves: (1) by stealing people's prized possessions and dropping them in other people's pockets, I would plunge the building's occupants into civil war. (2) I would stand in the doorway and vomit magical explosions into the room till my stamina reserves ran out. Plan (1) looked pretty tempting till I realised that I'd paid zero attention to the Sneak perk, and that as a consequence, Toxic would have to kill people to stop them noticing when she robbed them. Trial by fire, then.

I'll skim over the cut and thrust of the ensuing battle, the way the frame rate collapsed like a deflating cowpat under the weight of guard reinforcements, and the bit where I got stuck behind a staircase with four shrieking, burning legionnaires. Needless to say, Toxic is no longer on Falkreath's Christmas card list. The local bandit population aren't that keen either. Chased off into the forest by the aforesaid shrieking, burning legionnaires, I attempted to vent my frustration on a passing fox only for it to lead me to a greenskin encampment, Cracked Tusk Keep.

It was quite a magical chain of events, actually - the gleam of starlight on the beast's hurrying back as I ineffectually fired arrows at it, then the glitter of torches through the pine needles. Fun fact: Orcs all seem to have the same voice. They also read some pretty up-market books, including "The Biography of Uriel Septim" and "The Acturian Heresy". And their leaders sometimes carry magical weapons, like the double-handed Axe of Scorching and Iron Sword of Cold now in Toxic's possession. Leaving the Keep's cellar considerably more burdened than when I arrived, I set off (via Whiterun, as ever) for the town of Morthal.

If you're going picnicking in Skyrim, Morthal is the spot. A beautiful rose-red sunrise blossomed as I strolled over to some guys bitching about "wizards in our midst" and axed one of them so hard he rebounded straight up and landed on another guy's head. On fire. I had just enough time to spot a fort up the river (there's a lovely stone bridge in Morthal, sort of reminds me of Kettlewell in North Yorkshire) before the archers kicked off. Those bloody archers. Always spoiling the moment, then running out of range when I try to beast them with mystic icicles.

Skyrim's Dwemer: extinct, or just missing?

20 minutes left on the clock. Time for the fast-travelling to commence in earnest. Goodbye Morthal, goodbye snivelling, unsportsmanlike archers - and hello Morkath Side, a city built right into the belly of Skyrim's western mountain range. Are you reading, Dwemer scholars? Morkath Side is where you should spend the bulk of your estimated 300 play hours. It was once a dwarf fortress, and most of the original architecture remains intact - heavily carved, palpably ancient blocks; great bronze doors ornamented with slanting sunbeam motifs; and streets that are more like staircases, climbing steeply among gushing riverlets, bare granite and wiry trees.

Passing under the gatehouse, I saw a man backstab a woman browsing a market stall. An act of worthy evilness, you'd have thought, deserving a round of applause - but evil is nothing if not envious of its privileges, and if there's one thing Toxic doesn't like, it's people reducing the number of people there are to kill. So she guillotined the man in half. Unfortunately, the locals took this completely the wrong way - they hailed her as a hero. A guardsmen even congratulated me on my mastery of two-handed weapons. Damn it.

I was about to remedy this lapse into perceived nobility with some cathartic groin-stabbing, when a man named Eltrys interrupted. "You dropped this note," he muttered slyly, handing me it. The note turned out to be an invitation to meet at the Shrine of Talos. Shenanigans were afoot, and I hadn't even set anybody on fire yet.

With my PR handler tapping his watch, I decided to forgo the usual new-town axe-murdering ritual and explore Morkath further. Tucked right at the top of the town, another set of huge bronze doors provided access to Understone Keep - a combination of temple, burial ground and factory, buried deep within the mountain. Think Mines of Moria meets Westminster Abbey.

Points of interest: stags heads and complex mechanisms armed with shields and what look like guns, presumably of Dwemer origin, long since deactivated. Defences: dudes in helmets, lightning mages. Lightning mages do exactly what it says on the tin, in case you're wondering. They also tend to do it while back-pedalling, which isn't much fun for hypothetical pursuing Argonians, especially when said Argonians are massively over-encumbered.

And thus it was, amid electricity storms and yelling, that Toxic's stay in Skyrim came to an end. Given her achievements, I can only marvel at what potential nastiness awaits those who bother to play constructively - seeing out conversations, getting beyond each quest's opening gambit, and daring the full-blown dungeons that (Log tells me) lurk off in the wilderness.

The proof of Skyrim's magnificence is this: you can tackle it like a Great White Shark with attention-deficit disorder, brutalising or flat-out ignoring its gameplay structures, and still come away with a story to tell. Hope you've enjoyed mine. I'm looking forward to hearing yours.

While the review embargo for Skyrim is still in effect, those on the VGA voting council have played enough to nominate it as one the five finalists for Game of the Year! Skyrim joins Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

What would be awesome... would be some type of active voice chat that we could all be on (if we wanted of course) while playing this long awaited single player game. Just to share experiences, etc. Kinda wish PSN had that set up. Would be neat to get hints, share treasure locations, etc. Let's face it, hours and hours in a single player game can get lonely. And I know I'll be spending many hours.... heh

I tried picking it up last night, but I had my first ever bad experience with gamestop. I got there just when the massive line was forming so I ended up being about the 25th in line out of 200. So apparently, they are not like the gamestop I normally go to because having a receipt is not a big deal for them because they can print it up in a few seconds. Well, when miss GS came through the line, she told be to go to the back of the line because I didn't have a receipt, after she told that to the next few people, she just let them stay where they were after they knocked a few of us back a couple hundred spots. Needless to say, I said fuck that. So I will go to my normal gamestop to pick it up today.

I'm up to lvl 11. This is by far the BEST and most EPIC RPG I have ever played, and I've played a ton! The only down aspect compared to MMO, is that you actually have to listen to the storyline, and there are no "hey, I've got a quest for you" markers above peoples heads. You gotta just talk to people who seem to be having a hard time... Hi all,
My 9 year old daughter is all into wizards and stuff. She saw a commercial for Skyrim. Is it ok for someone her age? What are the bad things they show like any nudity? Thinking of getting it for her for Christmas.

Thanks?

I haven't played it but the ESRB rates it mature and gives the reasoning of:

"Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol"

I know many games do give the option of turning off gore but I don't know about Skyrim, one of the guys who has it will have to chime in about that. Here's the full description listed on the ESRB site:

This is a fantasy role-playing game in which players assume the role of Dovakin, a prophesied figure with the power to combat dragons in the fictional world of Skyrim. As players traverse through mountainous 'open-world' environments, they complete missions and quests that impact the eventual fate of their character. Players use swords, bows and arrows, axes, and magic attacks (e.g., fireballs, ice shards) to kill various enemies (e.g., wolves, dragons, human bandits and soldiers). As players engage in melee-style combat, some sequences are highlighted by slow-motion effects, particularly for decapitations. Large blood-splatter effects also occur during combat, and some environments are stained with blood or body parts (e.g., heads impaled on spikes). Some sequences allow players to injure/kill nonadversary characters, including prisoners chained to a wall; they scream in pain amid splashes of blood or fire. As the game progresses, the dialogue and on-screen text contains references to sexual material (e.g., “. . . all the whores your heart, or any other organ, desires,” “She . . . raped the men as cruelly as Bal had ravished her,” and “Remember when you thought [he] was . . . intent on making you . . . into his personal sex slave?”). Alcohol such as wine, mead, and ale can be purchased and consumed by players' character throughout the game; in one sequence, players can engage in a drinking contest with another character, which eventually results in slurred speech (e.g., “One more. No problemsh . . . Thash grape!”).

Get her one of the Harry Potter ones they're ok and my ten year old likes those. The Half Blood Prince is a good one as you get to free roam round Hogwarts and make spells/potions etc, play Quidditch, then there's combat using spells and searching out crests. It really is quite good fun.

Max enjoyed it too ;)

Tis true, the Harry Potter games are pretty decent, but being that they are movie based games they inevitably feel rushed and are a bit buggy. The good ones to get are Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4, and Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7 which I believe just released. Quality games there and good fun for everyone :)

Yeah definitely if she likes the books/films. The Potter Lego is awesome but it's the same as the other Lego games really obviously with Lego characters :-)

The Half Blood Prince game is excellent and more like the film, Max played it way before me so I didn't have any problems with it... as I'm sure the updates must have sorted any probs he found with it.

The game is awesome in scope and game play, but there is a bug on the PS3 version that is causing the game to lag to unplayable levels due to a large amount of memory usage as you open up more of the map and obtain quests. Bethesda has said they are working on it but no timetable on when we can expect a release of the patch. But still an epic game that I highly recommend.

Yeah though, it could go either way for me right now.

I'm playing like mad cos I rented it for 5 days lol... but if I take it back and don't buy it for a while (cos I can't afford to just yet) then I will probably lose interest by then and not be able to get back into it. Great RPG's can hold my attention for a good few months though and so far it's pretty good and addictive...not the best ever but good all the same.

Hey everyone I know there was a previous skyrim debate but it's more or less about gameplay and the release etc. just wanted to get everyones thought's on it and whether or not you believe it worthy of a Game of the Year title. I love the game personally. I definitely echo the multiplayer sentiment, which is why I'd go with Star Wars: The Old Republic for GotY.

However, that being said, Skyrim was definitely the single player GotY for 2011. It has solid gameplay. The voice acting is much better than Oblivion's, and while the reuse of the same voices and faces isn't as bad as it was in Oblivion, it can still be overly repetitive and some what off putting. The streamlining of the character progression is a welcome change that adds a lot more to the game than I thought it would.

It does have some frame rate issues at times and a few glitches, but they are all negligent and completely forgivable. Skyrim is my favorite Elder Scrolls game yet.

Also, this chick makes me want to play Skyrim every time I listen to this song:

When Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, the highly anticipated fantasy RPG from Bethesda Studios, finally hit store shelves late last year gamers everywhere rejoiced. But, among those who were slaying dragons and powering up their shouts, a large segment of PS3 gamers were experiencing a huge problem, one that, as it turns out, developer Bethesda was very much aware of.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers a near limitless single-player experience. The game’s Radiant quest system provides continuous side-missions for players to explore (and re-explore) areas they’ve never traveled before, find more loot and continuing to advance their skills, and last week’s release of the Skyrim Creation Kit means PC gamers can tweak, improve, alter the game in any way they see fit.

While Skyrim has provided one of the most immersive RPG experiences ever created, the title has had its fair share of bugs. With such a large open game world, the need for fixes is not too surprising. Fortunately, Bethesda has continually provided support for its magnum opus, by not only releasing the occasional patch but also a Skyrim Content Creation kit to help remedy some of these issues. Yesterday, Bethesda announced the release of its newest patch, Beta Update, 1.4.27, which includes some tweaks requested for the Skyrim Workshop by modders and other various fixes

Don't let it rule your life. I dropped quite a few hours into that game already.

But for starters -- don't waste money or perks leveling up the pickpocket or the lockpick trees. Also, archery rocks.

Actually upgrade pickpocket till you can get the additional 100lbs of carry weight. worth it imo.

I'm big on building up my smithing skill, comes in handy and once you've built it up high enough you can just craft the best weapons and armor. I'm also learning right now that you can level up enchanting really fast. So put those two together and you can customize your character's equipment to suit your style of play.

Otherwise, always make sure you have some sort of fire attack on hand (trolls can pop up anywhere and they are a pain at lower levels), always collect pelts (you can turn them into leather for smithing), and that's all I can think of right now ...

I chose the dark elf so fire shouldn't be a problem, do smithing huh, was leaning more toward iron for armor I'll look into hide

Oh I'm just saying, collecting the leather/hide helps make it cheap to level up your smithing. Also, ALWAYS have a pickaxe in your inventory (woodcutting axe is good to, but not as critical), you never know when you are going to come upon an ore vein. And you can takes those to a smelter to make ingots for smithing.

Iron is ok, but you will almost immediately be able to do steel and dwarven isn't that long after (or elven if you are going the light armor route). It helps to invest in the light armor side of the perk tree as advanced armors allows you to make some pretty awesome steel plate.

I used light armor this last playthrough for my thief/archer/one hand nord. I went the cheap way and just played through the thieves guild and dark brotherhood questlines before starting the main quest because some of the best light armor in the game for stealth actually comes from the thieves guild. Also, quick point of warning on leveling up smithing too fast -- you can just make iron daggers over and over to get your smithing up to 100 really fast, doesn't cost a whole lot and all that, but it also shoots your characters level up really fast.

Sorry little drunk right now, but my point is that if you shoot your character level up too fast the enemies in the game will level with you and you'll have a level 20 character who attacks at the level of a level 5 character against enemies who are way stronger than you because you haven't used the time to level up your weapons as you go.

Know this from experience, my second playthrough was on a thief wood elf archer and I wanted the light version of the dragon armor; well pretty easy to get but ended up screwing myself because my character couldn't kill shit. Even with the daedric bow that I forged... =/

I think it's funny that when i killed a chicken in Riverwood I was wanted by the entire hold. Yet when i killed the emperor and wore his clothes everywhere i went, no one cared. Nice huh?

Any of you guys tried importing saves from PC to Xbox? I maxed my gold and maxed my perk points but left my stats at base so I could level EVERYTHING. I put the difficulty to max and ever since the 1.5 patch I have been having such a blast with the new killcams and fixes.

Forgot to mention max carrying capacity. It's just enough to be able to explore EVERY aspect of Skyrim and still feel a sense of accomplishment when you do things.

I have over 100 hours into Skyrim and I'm not even past the Diplomatic Immunity main story quest. Which is like the 5th main quest in the story. Been derping around with everything else damn it. But it's still epic.

I wouldn't call it 'derping' lol thats what Skyrim is for. Sure theres the main story, but in the end you can basically make your own 'story'. I cant wait to see what they do with DLC. I have a feeling its going to be epic. ... wait for it ... wait for it ... HORSE ARMOR!!!!!!! lol jk

LOL. Do people actually use the horse riding feature? I never do. It is the one part of the game I hate.

I dont know if anyone else has seen this yet, but i noticed an update coming up that allows you to use voice commands for skyrim. Instead of going to the spell list and manually selecting your thuum, you could say it into the mic and it works. This would make the game alot better for me. I hate having to go through my spellbook each time i want a new spell. On the other hand, id feel like a dork saying all those words outloud, and it would be a pain in the ass to memorize each one.
