Windows 8.1 Reportedly Rolling Out in October
OS update said to go alongside the unveiling of new 7- and 8-inch Windows devices.

Microsoft is expected to begin rolling out Windows 8.1 to consumers as early as October, according to reports by ZDNet and The Verge. A preview of the first major update to operating system has been available since June, and Microsoft is said to be now testing near-final versions of new OS.

The company previously stated that it would provide hardware partners with the final build of the update — otherwise known as the Release to Manufacturing, or RTM, build — by the end of August, and it appears that Microsoft is still on track to reach that goal. The time between the RTM rollout and the general launch of Windows 8.1 will let OEMs manage their own testing and appropriatly update drivers before customers get their hands on the update. The public launch of Windows 8.1 will reportedly go alongside the release of new 7- and 8-inch devices, which have been rumored for quite some time now.

Windows 8.1 will be available as a free update for both Windows 8 and Windows RT users.

I have a buddy at work using this right now and he said it is buggy in some parts but that is to be expected, final version should be an improvement though

I can't believe they had to re-add the Start button....

But Win8 has been an exercise in not bothering to provide better UI solutions (and by better, I simply mean "more efficient" in this case, ASSUMING the user takes time to figure out how to do it) if they're "different". I wonder how many people who bitched so loudly about the disappearance of the button even took the few seconds to figure out where/how to click around to get around their GUI faster in 8 than they did in 7....

I don't like it. I don't care if it "can" be more efficient, the simple fact is its primarily mobile focused, and it's just not worth my time for me to learn new ways to do things for marginal speed gains.

But I bet you at least looked into it, right? I've had so many people bitch my ear off and had no idea clicking anywhere did anything at all. I don't have a problem with people knowing (EDIT: "being aware of" should probably replace "knowing") both systems and preferring the former, I have a problem with all the people bitching about the UI taking longer to get around when they were taking the long way, due to ignorance/laziness preventing them from knowing better.

Does that make more sense?

I think my fits of rage surrounding this are due to the fact that this particular subject has shades of idiots I have to work with every day. It just strikes a chord I guess.

No because you said you didn't like it, not that it was slower to get around. My issue is with the people yelling and screaming that "I can't do this anymore" and "this takes so much longer" (when it doesn't if you do it the right way).

In the end though, why is anyone who is missing the Start button (or other old methods) even using 8? Just use 7.

BTW I know I'm PMSing today so sorry about being a dick. But it's better to rage about Win8 amongst friends as opposed to heading out in public and going postal.

I was going for parody, lol. Only used it a little bit, but it wasn't terrible.

Yeah I guess so. And I don't really bitch about using 8, because I just use 7. I even bought a copy of 7 Ultimate for my new PC just so I'd be sure to have it. (In reference to your last post)

Makes me glad I'm not end user support anymore..... Our HD has been screaming about all the new Win8 users.

We updated most of our machines here in the office to 8. I have been loving it, you do use the keyboard more, and I like it that way. The addition of multi-monitor support is really nice as well.
LEARN THE HOT KEYS, you can get to anything you want just by hitting the windows key (brings up the new start menu) then start typing. In two seconds you can have control pannel, my computer, run, cmd, evntvwr, Word, Excel ect ect ect.

They also added the "Power User" hot key, hit Windows+X and you get this nice little menu on the bottom left of your primary monitor. This also works in 2012.

Agreed, the hot keys are necessary if you really want to fly around the UI. When I said clicking around I guess I left the hot keys out.

Hot keys have been around a while though, but I know no one that has used them in previous iterations. Literally no one. The Ocho is the first iteration to really encourage you to use them.
