Yea I got a code, but when I went to drpepper.com I don't see where to redeem it. I'm not new to this, I redeemed about 5-6 cap codes for mass effect 3, but this doesn't seem like that...

it's odd, my excitement for this game sort of peaked just before the beta and then dropped a lot since then. new info keeps coming out but when i see it where i used to be like "omg, this is going to be so awesome" i've been more like "meh, cool i guees" lately. not sure why though because i am still looking forward to the game and know it will be great, maybe i'm just burnt out on pregame hype and need to get to playing the game already?

Found a pretty extensive write-up from a participant in the latest BF3 event at the GeForce LAN. Also included is a comment that is linked in the post, but easy to miss, that clears up what exactly will be included in the Dr. Pepper Promo and goes into more detail on the mortars.

Correct, when your minimap expands you can see any red dots that teammates or a UAV/T-UGS have spotted. With the right teamwork a UAV/Mortar combination could be killer, as long as you have some guys watching your back. The mortars have a decent range, I set them up outside of the "Checkpoint" spawn on Caspian Border and was able to just barely reach the "Hilltop" spawn. You also are restricted to what seems to be a (90?) degree cone stretching out from the direction you are facing when you place the mortar. If you want to aim mortars to your left, right or flank, you have to stand up, pick the mortar up, and place it down again facing the new direction. You get nice firepower, but you are pretty exposed and vulnerable while firing it. It makes a loud noise
P.S. The Dr. Pepper camouflage wasn't hokey or anything; it looked kind of like a funky remix of CADPAT from the Canadian Army.

I did the same thing with Call of Duty, and am now actually eyeing the Elite premium. It's too late to pre-order the hardened edition at the store, but Elite is the only part of it I'm truly interested in. Since I tend to buy map packs, it pretty much pays for itself.

The battlelog is for all the platforms, even allows chat and friend list across platforms.

The only addition to the PC version in battlelog is the ability to launch your game from it/server browser

Let's sit down for a few minutes and talk about Battlefield 3.

Let's step outside of the hype, the constant back and forth between fans of the series and fans of, you know, that series. Let's leave the baggage attached by EA's masochistic desire to sidle right up against that game, and we can ignore that beta too. I know it's hard. But let's do it anyway.

Instead, let's talk about what we've been told is DICE's most ambitious, biggest game ever. And let's talk about how Battlefield 3 is simultaneously disappointing in that respect, and brilliant in others, and why that might be OK anyway - maybe even great.

It might be hard to see it initially. Multiplayer is Battlefield 3's sharp edge, but the singleplayer is the point of its blade. DICE and EA have shown it repeatedly, and you can see why – it shows well. Everything is put together like DICE expected you to look at it. Characters move naturally, the lighting is beautiful, and explosions are often scary in scope and impact. It sounds like a proper warzone, with the most terrifyingly authentic audio I've heard in a game.

But it's not much fun.

Battlefield 3's campaign isn't just a straight line, it's tactically linear. Firefights almost always unfold the same way. This is partly due to enemy AI that often seems stuck to a six foot leash from where they initially appear, but it goes deeper than that. For all the talk of destruction and immersion, Battlefield 3's campaign is a step backward from the manic calamity of Bad Company 2. There's no more blowing holes through walls to make an alternate route. Environmental destruction is cosmetic or scripted.

None of that is a death sentence – Modern Warfare drew the blueprint for the modern linear shooter, and it still managed to be fast, fun, and exciting. But Modern Warfare always gave you something to do, and enemies that were fun to shoot. Battlefield 3 is clearly referencing that blueprint, but it fails in this regard. There aren't that many enemies to shoot, and DICE has made up for that by allowing them to fire through geometry with pinpoint accuracy. It leads to a lot of trial by death and memorization. It's not fun.

Battlefield 3's does occasionally do something cool. A jet sequence made the de rigeur death-from-above sequence exciting again. As the FA-18 was catapulted off the deck, I felt a hint of that twinge of panic that hits me during take-off in real life. I forgot my sidekick disappointment as I turned my head left and right in a panic trying to spot the fighter aircraft trying to kill us. The sniper sequence later on was panicky and desperate and exciting... until I failed the mission several times trying to figure out exactly what Battlefield 3 expected me to do.



These and a couple of other moments are light peeking out from the depths of the campaign's otherwise mediocre trappings. Amidst all the bombast and wub-wub ambient/mild-dubstep underpinnings of the soundtrack (which I liked quite a bit), Battlefield 3's campaign never quite figures out what it wants to do, and it frequently goes for emotional resonance that it doesn't earn. The quicktime events don't really accomplish anything. Story moments that should be shocking struck me as exploitative.

Then there's the co-operative campaign, such as it is, which suffers from all of the same design issues of the main game. There are six scenarios that are laid out roughly like campaign content without the exposition, which means it's often even more unclear what you're supposed to be doing, or what the stakes are. The enemy AI remains as murderously un-fun to fight as it is in the singleplayer campaign. Theoretically, things should be more fun with a friend, but I found it doubly frustrating.

Taking only the campaign and the co-op into consideration, Battlefield 3 is a mess. It feels like a developer way outside of their comfort zone, trying to catch someone else's lightning in their bottle. It lacks any identity or soul.

Battlefield 3 finds that identity and soul in its multiplayer.



Battlefield 3 marks DICE's attempt to marry the scope and scale of Battlefield 2 with the destruction and close quarters dynamics of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and it mostly works. My biggest complaint is the size of the maps (at least in the PC version). The really huge maps have giant buffer zones on either side of the main areas of interest, which served mainly to delay respawning players from immediately jumping back into the fray. Perhaps those areas exist for the re-introduced warplanes to have space to maneuver and be useful, but having to run (or even drive) three or four hundred meters before I could even see the action wasn't fun.

That out of the way, Battlefield 3 is the most fun I've had playing a shooter online since Bad Company 2. The class based play allows for players to select a role and succeed in it outside of the basic "kill more guys than guys kill you" model. If you can step out of an obsession with the mythical kill/death ratio, you can die again and again and still have fun. Maybe you'll be a tank commander... or maybe you'll be the guy fixing it, making sure your team's tank ace can keep the pressure on indefinitely.

It's telling that Battlefield 3's multiplayer emphasis remains objective based game types Rush and Conquest. Both feel distinctive. Rush's alternating attack or defend mentality against entrenched positions makes for a very distinct experience for either side, every game, making for interesting tactical play. Conquest's constantly shifting possession makes for a more frantic experience. Both of them are a ton of fun, and every map plays completely differently from one mode to the other, which gives the feeling of twice as many maps to play on. Operation Metro, the map that players had access to in the Battlefield 3 beta on all three platforms, is an exercise in frustration in Rush. But it's a fantastic map in Conquest.



There is less destruction than I had hoped, though. It's not Bad Company 2, and levels won't start out intact and end looking like the surface of the moon the way they often did in that game. You might get a little wistful when you find walls you can't put a rocket through, but you'll probably get over it after the first couple of hours.

Diving into Battlefield 3's more robust team deathmatch modes seems like a waste of time with the work DICE put into re-balancing classes. Their decision to give Medics the Assault class's weapon set means health is being laid down on the front lines, sustaining forward momentum, while making the machine-gun wielding troops the beacon of ammo resupplies forces consideration of resources and tactical retreats. Suppression is a great addition, and another way to be useful.

There are some minor things that I think will become issues later on; Recon players have entirely too much ammunition, and engineers feel woefully underprepared for enemy armor. Meanwhile, planes make too short work of opposing tanks and troop carriers, which can lead to bizarre stalemates on some maps.

But the feel of Battlefield 3's multiplayer combat is unmatched. Forget the beta – there's been subtle changes and fixes to damage models and netcode. Combat in Battlefield 3 is now closer to what it was in Bad Company 2, with an emphasis on tactical decision making and smart shooting over twitch reflexes (though there is some of that). The reintroduction of prone to the series allows for more fluid strategic movement, as running across an open space and diving to your belly is a totally viable option during some firefights. It's another of those Battlefield Moments. You can't get it until you play it, but once you do, every game will have at least one.

Finally, I suppose I'd be remiss in skipping over Battlelog. You will use it; you don't have a choice. When you launch Battlefield 3 through Origin, it actually launches your default browser, which prompts you to log into Battlelog, where you'll install a browser plugin, which will let you navigate your full Battlefield 3 ExperienceTM.



Put simply, I like the robust stat tracking of Battlelog. It updates instantly, and it has all of the numerical data and unlock info you could want. Of course, it lacks heatmaps or game summaries, and also, the notion of using a third party browser to navigate Battlefield is bizarre, especially given that Origin runs in an overlay on top of Battlefield 3. Even more bizarre, your Origin friends aren't automatically your Battlelog friends. You have to search for friends and add them manually. Also, if you want to switch from campaign to multiplayer, you'll have to quit the game, and launch the other game mode from Battlelog. I won't mark Battlefield 3 down for it, but it's not a great user experience all the time.

In a way, your choice should be simple. If solo play is your primary motivator, then it's hard to recommend Battlefield 3 as anything more than an audio-visual treat. The times where Battlefield 3 does its damnedest to go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty are the times it stumbles the hardest. But when DICE is doing what it's always done best, Battlefield 3 is a uniquely mesmerizing multiplayer game with a seemingly endless number of ways to feel like a success. It's not revolutionary, but it's the best Battlefield game, and that's saying a lot.

yeah that was the plan but seeing as I'm quickly running out of time (especially on BF3, not even sure they'd take in store preorders this late in the game) it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Maybe MW3 but BF3 looks doubtful. I'll get it eventually but a nice shiny preordered LE is looking pretty unlikely unless I get hooked up and they give me an extra one they have laying around

Walmart is the place to go if you want to beat lines. If you have a 24-hour walmart anywhere near you then you can buy the game, even without a preorder without the hassle of a line. That's right apparently from what I was reading, the texture pack for the PS3 was part of the install where as the 360 release it was on a second disk. However the article I saw didn't address why that was as much as that it is.

gunclub takes forever to update properly, if at all. I have yet to receive the BF3 beta pin, most people haven't even gotten the alpha pin, and that's just the minor stuff. Gunclub needs work because it clearly has a lot of issues still even though it's been around for a while now.

I have been rocking the M1 Abrams!

Was playing Conquest on Operation firestorm,

Two T-90s where ganging up on my squad mate (in another abrams) trying to take the flag closest to our spawn.

I roll out as fast as I can using the boost function, sneak up behind the t-90s using the hills as cover. I come upon them about 300m away, I start a move and shoot with the main gun at about 2o'clock.
I slam a SABOT round up the ass of the first t-90, he explodes beautifully. I duck behind a hill while my cannon is reloading.
Meanwhile his buddy's top gunner had seen me, they spun around and fired a round just infront of my hull. "got ya!" I say

While he is reloading I hit the boost close the distance, right as I pull out I fire another SABOT round and get a lucky hit.
His T-90 starts smoking and they bail out and start running, I hit the "2" key and switch to the coax and mow them down. Switch back to the main gun and finish of their tank. Rolled up and helped cap the flag.

My squad mate managed to survive by ducking in and out of the buildings, he said in the team chat... 'wow nice tank driving man' I had the biggest grin on my face :cool:

These "battlefield moments" really set this apart. And really make me happy :redface:

If you need a PC built, cyberpowerpc.com would be better than Alienware, allow more customization of hardware, and save you some dough. Or you could buy all the components and build it, or have a friend build it who knows how. Hell, I enjoy building rigs when it all works right out of the box.

That being said, if you're wary of build-your-own types of setups, cyberpowerpc would be the way to go. They've even got a one year warranty on their work.

Anyway, yeah, I was thinking of giving the server a go, but I was waiting for our numbers to grow on the PC side a bit. Do you think it would be a good idea to take care of the server first to help recruiting efforts?

The Blu-ray disc is a medium that can store a hell of a lot of content. So much so, in fact, that game publishers are starting to include PlayStation 3-exclusive content to fill up all of that room. Thus, back in June, Electronic Arts promised that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would be bundled with Battlefield 1943. But now that Battlefield 3 is out, it's clear that that's not the case.

Electronic Arts has responded on its @Battlefield Twitter account, noting to a customer that "in lieu of 1943 being available on disk for PS3 customers, EA has made all BF3 expansions available early to PS3 customers." That sounds like a fairly reasonable deal, until you realize that PS3 gamers were already promised Battlefield 3 DLC early.

The only question now is, how many PSN codes for Battlefield 1943 does Electronic Arts and Sony have to cook up to make this right?

I've already got 1943. It's not a bad game, but not one of the better outings in the BF series. I got all the trophies and stopped playing. It's nice for a pick-up game, but nothing worth pursuing in a hardcore manner, IMO.

Is it easier to kill people in regular mode in BF3 than it was in BC2? I got so used to HC in BC2 that it became the norm, and any time I went back to regular mode, I just got so frustrated that it took an entire LMG drum at point blank range to kill someone....

I'm liking HC on BF3 though. It kinda seems like a lot of people know the maps much better than I do, which makes it pretty tough, but I like it.

Yeah I've been able to find a lot of low ping servers, but they're sometimes low quality on the processing side it appears. I think a lot of the server providers underestimated the demands of a 32-64 player server in BF3.

During a financial call today, John Riccitiello, Chief Executive Officer at EA, took time to laud the launch of Battlefield 3, saying, that the battle-heavy FPS "is off to a fantastic start on sales and quality," but he also addressed the somewhat rocky launch of the title. According to EA, the internet reports of servers being slow or down were due, quite simply, to the game's sales.

"In terms of network services, we've had unprecedented peaks," Riccitiello said. Those peaks caused parts of network to experience outages, according to EA. Do not fret, however. EA says they've "got a handle on it," and are prepared for the launch of the game in Europe.

If you're concerned that the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic's launch will suffer similar problems, EA would like you not to worry. During the call, they pointed out that the no-console nature of the Star Wars MMO (and the already-in-progress betas) should keep things stable.

Thanks to Tracker for driving me around in that LAV! We were messing that other team up bad. I think I got about 10 kills in that thing before we got destroyed. If anyone wants to get in a vehicle with an awesome driver tracker is your man!!

DICE is currently working on a Battlefield 3 patch that will improve a number of things, fix some issues, and so on — whatever a patch is supposed to do. But the upcoming patch will also tweak some gameplay elements like weapons and vehicles, chief of which are the jets. If you’ve tried to fly a jet in Battlefield 3, you’d know that the entry bar is very steep: you are only given access to a machine gun, which is incredibly hard to rake up any points with in order to get any useful weapon unlocks, like air to air missiles or even flares.

But according to DICE’s Frederik Thylander (via Twitter), jets are getting “buffed up” in an upcoming Battlefield 3 patch. Thylander responded to complaints from users that jets are underpowered, which they in many ways are in their current form. It’s still unknown what kind of upgrades jets might receive, but at the very least, we hope that flares are available as standard.

The only thing they should beef up are the guided missiles they don't even disable vehicles. The trick is to lead your machine gun when shooting another jet. Helos are the easiest also. But I do agree flares should be standard

Hello everyone!

It´s sunday night over here at the office. It´s cold and dark outside but inside one of the nicest buildings located in the heart of Stockholm, sits a team that is working on updates. We at DICE are rolling out a new server update and of course, we are posting the change log to you.

For users, this means that you don´t need to update your client since this is a server side update.

- Fix for crashes usually occurring during level switches. Server providers may see a little bit of memory leakage instead in this situation

- Game servers should no longer quit in some situations where the online backend servers are down. Server will reconnect to the backend once it's up again

- Fix for ghost servers which didn't accept connections

- Kick reasons should better match situations where they are issued. This will help battlelog provide more accurate information to the player

- Connection fixes to avoid players sometimes being rejected while joining the game server on one of the last slots

- Security updates

- Improved server logging

I found the best way to counter those guys is with the thermal sights on a tank. Granted, not all maps have tanks, but for those that do you can certainly make life miserable for would be campers.

They are also VERY effective for highlighting mines placed on the road. I was playing in a squad with a random last night. I kept stopping while we were on the Kharg Island map to destroy mines in the road. He comes over the mic and says "How do you see those?". I explained that I was up the thermal sights unlock, and he was pretty impressed.

That being said, I think the K/D junkies will start to thin out over the next two weeks. Uncharted 3 hits the shelves tomorrow, and MW3 next week. Some people will be flocking to those games and thinning out the run-and-gunners.

I was thinking of going to 64 player server, and add rush maps in there too, but rush doesn't support 64 yet, so half the pop would get randomly kicked when going into those matches. From what I understand, rush will soon support 64 as well...? They need to get these damn reserved slots working. I have to sit at the admin console to wait to see that someone drops the game, and then I try to be real quick and join, but half the time when joining the last slot, it DC's me anyway.

Yeah one of the complaints I had was with the fact that there is no server-specific loading screen. I don't like that. I'd like to set the ground rules straight (which basically would just be no disrespect, no spawn killing when the enemy is down to one spawn point, and actually make an effort at the objectives). It sucks when I have to Alt+Tab back to the admin console to say something, because 50% of the time that also causes the server to drop me, so having to yell at those dumb ass kiddies is a real pain in the ass.

River, you can also get the IR scope for most weapons. It doesnt have any magnification for the PDW or Carbines so it is also effective in CCB. Havent used it on any of the assault class weapons or support so I cant speak for those.

I was tinkering with the plugins via frostbite - after I got its setup and yelled at for it autoposting every 5 seconds, it seemed to do okay. I set it to announce the rules every 10 minutes.

I updated our map list to include both TDM, and RUSH maps. TDM only support 24 people, so a few people do get dumped when the map switches.. Let me know if you do not want this.

As for server slots, when I want to play, I honestly, go in and kick a couple people off from both sides, to make a slot for me. I mean, it is your server, you pay for it, and until they fix reservations, I would say you reserve the right to do that.. ;)

The only problem I have with mixing 24 and 32 maps with the 64 maps is that once you get done with the 24 or 32 and increase back to 64, the server doesn't show up in searches that look for near-full servers. This could hurt our chances to get good 64 player action going and sustain it. I had read something in a forum from EA themselves I think which stated rush would be increased to 64 players at some point, so I hope they do that soon. I know there's a var tweak you can do to actually allow a 64 player rush game ( http://forums.gameservers.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=46498&sid=993a624f33063a7d6382e4335a49d954&start=15 ), but it doesn't increase the ticket count for the game to last long enough for the attackers to win.

And as far as the booting people goes, I have no problem doing that, but it sucks for all the clan members who can't do that, and part of why I want to boot people to get onto the server is because I would like to team up with our guys, who can't get to the server by booting.

Ive removed the Rush matches from the server, was having a few complaints lastnight. We are back to a pure conquest server. Seems people prefer that, I'm not the one usually to pander to people but I like to see our server full.

EDIT: Also set Caspian border as the first map on the list, when it sits at Caspian it seems to fill up.

BTW, I am one of those noob tubers. I'm tired of an assault sitting behind cover and shocking everybody back to life. The best way (IMHO) to try to wipe the medic out is with explosives. So, people bitch about noob tubers on that map, yet if there weren't noob tubers, we'd just be sitting there pew pewing at each other and getting nothing accomplished because everybody gets revived.

Gotta love tubes, and even RPG/SMAW at times. I was set up covering this doorway on the marketplace Rush map. They kept entering the room, I kept tossing 320 rounds in it. Three rounds, 8 kills. If they're that dumb, it's pretty clear the guy with the tube isn't the "noob."

What kinda specs do you have on your PC?

I have an almost 4 year old PC, and it runs BF3 fine..

Just a simple, cheap Microstar International laptop. 2.2 GHz Intel Duo Core, 4 GB RAM, 256 MB nVidia GeForce 8200M G graphics, running Windows 7 Home 32-bit.

It gets the job done for most things, but graphics are choppy at best.

I used to build tower systems all the time, but I haven't done so in probably 8 years.
