I Struggled more with the older one on NES, Ghosts and Goblins. The killer part was you had to beat the whole damn thing twice to actually beat it, which they decided to do throughout the series making all of the games extremely hard. no saves, run out of lives and it's over. Game trailers had ranked the series as a whole 2nd most difficult game ever made back in 2008, falling short of BattleToads on NES
